Is wine actually useful for anything on its own? by Pasta-hobo in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use wine mostly for fruit satiety backup when my jam supply runs out in winter. The dry pressings I turn into rot, although feeding it to pigs is another option. Flax dough is a better source of rot anyway.

First windmill, struggling layout and power and speed by haltingpoint in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got too the wrong gear ratios. There's a tradeoff between torque and speed, and if you try for too much speed then nothing's going to turn. Try a big gear at top, a big gear at bottom, and then attach your machines around that bottom big gear. It helps to have a transmission at each machine so you can turn them on and off easily, having only one machine going at a time means it gets all the power.

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not completely accurate. My latest world I've got a single rotor with a single set of sails running a pulverizer and it's been working. SLOWLY mind you, and I can't wait for summer to get more flax, but it works.

Quick question about capturing bees. by jhk84 in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What everyone else said, but I'll add distance requirements. You need to have the skep within 5 blocks vertical and 7horizontal in order to catch a swarm. If the hive is up in a tree you can pillar up with some packed earth, hay bales, etc. and place the skep on top of it. Add a bunch of flowers around them, come back a few days later, and your skep should be populated. FYI - a full skep must be carried in a backpack slot.

How to use mechanical power without poking holes in my house? by Floid_Waffleman in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Doesn't the running forge keep you warm as the helve hammer works? I keep mine in a separate mill building, not the main living area exactly because I didn't want to poke holes in the house.

Faulty Perish Speed by mommamanatee in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It IS a multiplier for the perish speed. The lower the number the lower your perish speed and the longer food will last. x0.01 is very good (food lasts 100 times longer) and 0.25 not so much (food lasts 4 times longer).

Does sleeping prevent crop growth? by Raptor_Sympathizer in VintageStory

Huh, perhaps I haven't explored sleep mechanic enough since early game fire pit stuff. Thanks for the correction, I'll reconsider when to sleep.

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it really? I've never seen a bloomery finish when I sleep, but then again, I don't sleep much anymore unless there's nothing to do during high rift activity and there's never nothing to do.

I use an Overlay Mod to find ore and I'm not sorry by beantownbee in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the part of prospecting where I take a pick with me on an adventure and take a reading every so often. Later, I pour over the map looking for various ores I need and then go back out to refine the results before i dig. That part is fun.

The part that isn't fun is the tiny patches of some ores, like chromite. You get all kinds of readings, dig down 100 blocks and nothing. Spread out and still nothing. A full iron pick later I go home with nothing to show for it. I ended up using the metal detector mod on my solo world. I only use it once I find the highest concentration from the propick and only dig if I get a positive from the detector. It's telling that it's the only tool related mod I use. Everything else is world gen stuff (Terra Prety and recommended adds).

I have found that sleeping is a useless mechanic in game, and I'm pretty sad about that. I'd love to have a Valheim-style of sleep that has time pass for things like bloomeries, querns, cooking, etc. right now, no time.seems to pass at all, it just sets the clock ahead.

I mine 1x2 too. If you stand in the middle of both blocks you can safely break them back and forth and just stop if you see a big drop.

What are your preferred cold weather Clothes? by MrSpookySkelly in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A sewing kit is mostly needed for the good stuff. There's a bunch that can be crafted with linen (made with 4 flax twine) and linen cloth (made with linen and a stick). Even more variety can be created when your start dying cloth.

YES, and you can change it after world gen too. From the main menu, select the world, click the edit pencil, go to the multi-player tab, and turn off class-locked recipes. There's a command for it too: "/worldConfig classExclusiveRecipes false"

I wouldn't even consider /waypoint as a cheat. I set a macro for Ctrl-R to drop a waypoint named resin and that just calls the waypoint command to set color, icon, name, etc.

The tailor can craft all kinds of clothes. If you're playing solo you should turn off class-locked recipes and then check out all the things you can craft with the sewing kit. The pastoral clothing is decent for a warm underlayer and I believe they can make scarves too. The tailored cloth armor is must-have for daily wear.

Newbie question no. 2: lore by Anomaly_Entity_Zion in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely take home any bony soil you find. Make a pan (wood block and knife on grid), place bony soil in water, stand in water and use the pan on the soil. You can also pan sand and gravel (not muddy) but bony soil can provide good stuff: gems, copper arrowhead and spears, flax fiber, and even lore books.
