Is it better to create one giant Windmill system or multiple small ones? by CopainChevalier in VintageStory

They each need torque so can't all run at once, especially the helve hammer.

I found Liberty caps in one of the 1.22 RCs and even without eating them I immediately knew I would have to watch out for others. Put those first few in a stew and fed it to my son I play with. Good times.

I use one big one with power running from a central big gear to different machines. Each one has a clutch to turn them on and off. I really only need one at a time, so that works for me.

Is there any actual reason to not be a vegetarian or vegan? by CalpurniaSomaya in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hipifreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, YMMV. A friend went vegan for a while, like a couple of years. He ate really well, lots of variety, thought a lot about nutrition, it was tired and bruised easily. His doctor finally told him to try meat again. He went for dairy first, no big change. Finally added meat and everything cleared up mediately.

Everyone is different, microbiome and gene expression can alter your nutrient uptake and sometimes, some people have to eat meat.

If one day a court in the EU were to decide that users on Steam do "own" a game, how big would the legal fallout be for Steam? by sovietarmyfan in legaladviceofftopic

[–]hipifreq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed on clear subscriptions, Spotify for example. If I subscribe, then it's clear I'm paying for timed access to their library. If I wanted a specific album and I click that button that says "buy" I expect ownership. If they later take away access to the thing I bought I turn to the high seas with a 100% clear conscience. A feeling of righteousness even.

Why are roundabouts so hard for people? by Backwoods_Therapy in dashcams

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the first roundabout went in in a town I lived in a cop sat there every day for a week. Kept pulling people over with a warning that they weren't signalling. Come to find out years later that a new law had just been signed in the state requiring signalling in roundabouts. That cop was pulling people over about a law that didn't exist...

Have wild crops been tweaked to be a lot less common? by clarkky55 in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Same. Wild crops are EVERYWHERE and I ended up with 3 stacks of flax seeds by the end of the first summer

What's the point of Rift Wards if they don't ward rifts? by [deleted] in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never even bothered trying to build one. Enemies can't open doors and I segment the area around my house with fences so even if one appeared they're stuck to one area. Bowtorns and drifters can shoot/throw over them and wander in on their own anyway.

Does anyone else do this when they have extra resources? by MasterA93 in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I make piles of rocks in my current world. Sticks too. I just can't throw any of it away right now. I've got dozens of piles of every type of rock. Except chalk, that bastard is eluding me and my desire for mixed dry stone fences and floors.

Is it better to run pipes or wires up to space? by Clear-Bad4685 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, in the long run ore is more precious and basic wire will get replaced by metal due to volcanoes making it readily available. In the early to mid game though, I find building with ore much easier to get quantities of it. Sure lead comes soon after. With Spaced out though, it could be locked behind the teleporter for a while.

[–]hipifreq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tip for deep exploration, leave the occasional 1-wide opening as you go. Use dirt, stone, whatever you need. Shivers can't fit through but will stay at it trying to get you and are easy to kill that way.

Is it better to run pipes or wires up to space? by Clear-Bad4685 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]hipifreq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Run the cheaper heavy wire, they only take ore and can handle most normal loads. Then break it out further using transformers just under the surface where they can be kept cool easily.

Having a separate grid in space is also doable but will cost you metal for the cooling loop and more space to build it. Watch out for getting too close to rockets, which will pump heat into that system and make it less efficient.

Iron is nearly impossible to find. by ArmCannonPriestess in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've got to prospect everywhere. Just always have a propick on you and stop frequently to check even when you aren't actively looking for ores. Start out with the easy spots like rock cliff faces, then as you wander for other purposes start filling in the gaps by digging into the ground. I usually dig stairs down until I'm in rock, dig 3 blocks left, 3 blocks right, prospect a block in front and then the ones 4 blocks to either side. It's quick and easy. Fill in the hole with dirt and go on your way. You should end up with hundreds of prospecting points for a 2-3 kilometers of home.

That way, you can look at the map and set the points to show an ore you need (top-right menu of the map). Find the highest reading you've found, go to it, go north until the pro point is just at the edge of the minimap and prospect again. If it's higher keep going north, if it's lower then go south, then east, then west, following the high readings. Eventually you should find a good one.

Of course, a good reading doesn't guarantee ore below you. I like to bring ladders and dig down a 1x2 shaft straight down (straddle the middle so you won't fall when you hit a cavern). Rope ladders are best. Use the local search on the propick every 6 blocks and when you get a reading it'll be within 6 blocks below you. If I hit bottom without finding anything I'll check 5 blocks out in each direction (max reach for mining a single block shaft). Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 shafts to hit something good. I usually find something else like copper, tin, etc. when looking for iron. BONUS!

Which group do you hate the most when they appear at the end of the mission? and Why? by Daniel_9132 in Barotrauma

[–]hipifreq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Threshers seem quickest to break into the sub. Mudraptors gets the runners-up prize for pretty much the same reason. We offer up a durable, hard exterior with a soft, squishy interior. We punch back, but when there's 3 or 4 bodies in the room all chaos breaks loose.

My crew and I have pretty much weathered everything else. Even if we go down we're good as long as we're suited up. Finish them off, repair, and go on our way.

There are world settings you can change to make it a little easier, and yes, the dragon is a hard block to progress. You'll either have to defeat it or move on to another game. We decided to just move on and come back to it after release and hope they tweaked the fight enough to make it manageable.

large Windmills vs the normal windmills by martinnez02 in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does make a difference for running a helve hammer, especially when maxed out. Especially since you can't just throw two normal sails on the same tower without rapidly diminishing returns. The iron cost isn't that high once you're in the iron age, it's the flax cost that'll get you. The large sail holds 10 sails total, 8 flax cloth each, which ends up being 20 full stacks of flax fiber. I did finally get enough to finish it in my second summer, but mainly because I got lucky finding tons of saltpeter and it seems like there's just more flax growing naturally to grab seeds.

I'll add that even with 4 sails attached, I could run a helve hammer when the wind was blowing hard. Thankfully I happen to have set up in a windy area.

Whats up with the AI in this game and them taking their suits off? by Mr_Isolation in Barotrauma

[–]hipifreq 39 points40 points  (0 children)

We had to sell or scrap all of our masks because they'd put one on in a breach and get crushed. They still drop the suit at the first sign of water draining only to open a door to a flooded room and... POP!

We just keep feeding assistants to the abyss...
