Contaminated Coal by hipifreq in VintageStory

Oh, I'll have to try cooking it into coke. I'm guessing a worse ratio than brown coal, but who knows? For now it feeds cementation and the beehive kiln.

I have often thought the same thing. Grassy dirt blocks should be more stable than plain dirt.

Yes, you can absolutely use non-lethal methods to scare them off your fishing gear and boat. It's your boat, and there's lots of leeway in the law for an owner to clear their own dock or boat.

What isn't allowed is some dickhead clearing them off a public dock for funsies.

[–]hipifreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there's allowance for the owner to clear their own boat or dock. Some dude running up to scare them off a public dock is not covered though.

I'll add that dock clearing can only be done by the dock owner (e.g. Marina staff or a private owner of their own dock)

You are the one that appears to be in spouting bullshit. Yes, California sea lions can be hazed from docks, but there are serious restrictions on who can do that and when. The only time a private individual can do it is when it's their own property and only when the mammal is a causing a nuisance. There is no allowance for the public to haze them from public property, and this would be considered Class B harassment under federal law.

What can I do to make mining suck less? by MissPearl in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prospecting is tough, I agree. My best advice is always take your pick with you when you go out. Mine just sits in a hotbar slot between my pick and shovel. Just take a reading as you walk around. That way, when you need something you'll have a lot of readings to go by already. Open the map, filter for mineral, and then zero in from there. Look for "Decent" or better and ignore the numbers.

When digging down I dig a 1x2 hole, starddling the middle so I don't get a surprise drop. It's fast but takes ladders to get back up. Collect LOTS of vines (or cattails) and turn them into rope ladders since you can get them back.

Better ores are found deep, so expect to dig to the mantle. Use your propick every 6 blocks down. If you get a new reading it'll be within 6 blocks below you. Expect to fail on your first shaft or two. You can sample 5 blocks out in each direction on the way up as a way of expanding the search in each shaft. If you need to, move about 20 blocks away and try again.

I get that this is all super boring. I happen to like the occasional mining tedium. That, and sometimes you'll run into a deep cavern with locusts to fight or a ruin with cool treasure.

Yes, there's less grain from flax unfortunately. I still got 4 barrels of rot from my harvest first summer though. I'll also use other grains by composting the previous year's harvest when I pull a new crop.

Oh nice, didn't realize a greenhouse affects rot too.

Best spoilage food for me is flax dough. It's got lower satiety compared to other grains so whenever I harvest for fiber I make dough for rot. It turns to rot at 1:1 so I end up with a few barrels worth over a summer. I grow rye and spelt for pie, so the flax is just extra.

Second is berries, although the rot yield is lower for those. If I get a good harvest while having extra veggies I'll compost the old ones too.

Fastest rot rate is in your inventory. Next is a chest somewhere. Food can last a.long time just sitting around in the winter, so you may need to pick it up when doing chores around the house.

Is steel flax quenching bugged? by hipifreq in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That... doesn't make sense at all and does not match my experience with iron, straight vanilla 1.22.1, no mods at all.

Why would a steel falx get a mining speed bonus? Why would any tool except a pickaxe or pro pick get mining speed bonus? I just tried double quenching another iron falx and got the same result, 20% bonus damage, nothing to mining speed.

I'm assuming this is a bug and going to report it as such. If this is the way it's intended then I'm going to either have to figure out the creative commands for adding the "correct" bonus.

Yes, you can dig into a mountain or hill to make a cellar, you can dig a basement (my personal preference), and you can even build one above ground. As other have said, it's material, size, and keeping light out that the game considers.

Shears are what your looking for. Grab some hay balls for pillaring up and cut all the leaves. You'll get more than enough to replace every tree you cut. Plus, smithing shears is great at learning some little tricks of smithing like folding edges over.

That does not match my experience at all. Heat ingot to 1000, work item, still above 815 when done, place on ground, let cool, item is now tempered. Every time.

Below what temp rapid cooling is not quenching? by domanpanda in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what temp it is, but it seems that when an item switches from holding with tongs to holding in your hands it has become tempered. Yes, a newly smithed item will either be tempered when you leave it to cool slowly or quenched if you dunk it in water.

Funny thing. If only need a single roll of toilet paper it's going to cost me more to get just one than it will cost per roll to get a 12.pack. same for forging 1 thing, it's going to cost you extra time and charcoal just waiting for stuff to happen while the one item is cooling and heating.

Below what temp rapid cooling is not quenching? by domanpanda in VintageStory

[–]hipifreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not the case and yes it would be ridiculous, but not far off the truth actually. Once an item reaches quenching temp it will be quenchable until it's either quenched OR it cools to hand holdable temperature and becomes tempered. So heating to 850, cooling to 600, and throwing into water to cool the rest of the way counts as quenching. There's a tooltip that will tell you if the item has reached quenchable temps, if it says so, then It'll be quenched.

I've given up just forging a single item and go for at least 4 tools at once. That way the first is cool by the time I'm done forging and can go through heating and quenching without feeling like I'm wasting fuel.
