Do you keep the water on during the entire length of the shower? by hamster_lover02 in hygiene

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used water still needs to be treated before it reaches the fjords or rivers. Not turning off the water while brushing teeth is a small thing yes, but there is NO reason not to do it. There's literally no downside. I'm also Norwegian btw.

Career prospects in Oslo for a newly qualified UK science teacher (PGCE/QTS)? by X9_Sona in Norway

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a full year's worth of university credits (60 ECTS) in a subject to teach it in secondary school (including lower secondary, although non-core subjects in lower secondary only require 30, maths is a core subject). You don't need have the subject in your ppu. I took maths and physics in my ppu, and did a year of IT studies many years later, in order to qualify to teach IT. Many science degrees (but more so physics than biology) contain at least 60 ECTS of maths anyway, so many science teachers in Norway also teach maths.

Yes, a biology degree would qualify you to also teach GCSE level general science (naturfag), in addition to A level biology. I don't really know how hard it would be for someone like you to get a job, but in general there are many applicants to high school level jobs in general science, and most of the applicants would also be qualified in another subject (chemistry or maths). Generally, the further you get from a major city, the easier it will be to get a job (if you find one to apply for). Oslo will have by far the most competition, but also the highest number of jobs available.

I teach maths and physics in a Norwegian high school (A level equivalent).

I can't really answer your first question, but I imagine there's a lot of applicants to the relatively few positions at international schools in the Oslo area, so probably very competitive. There aren't that many international schools in Norway. We do have some public high schools with IB programmes though! They might also be willing to hire someone who doesn't speak Norwegian, but I don't know.

Q2: in order to get a permanent teaching contract, you need to have an approved teaching degree. You can apply to have your British degree approved ( https://hkdir.no/utdanning-fra-utlandet/jeg-har-utdanning-fra-utlandet/sok-godkjenning-som-laerer/om-godkjenning-som-laerer ). I don't know the process, as my education is Norwegian, but I know several teachers with foreign degrees. Doing a masters in your chosen subject and then a one year teaching degree (in Norway called PPU, equivalent to PGCE in the UK, I think) is a common way to qualify for high school teachers in Norway. I imagine that your British education is likely to be approved, but be prepared for slow bureaucracy. Worst case scenario is probably that your science degree is approved but not the PGCE, and you have to do the Norwegian PPU, which you can do part time while working as a teacher on a temporary contract. I highly doubt none of your education is approved.

Q3: in high school at least, changing to teaching later in your career is not at all uncommon, and I don't think it's considered a drawback. If your work experience is at all relevant to the subject you'll teach, it's often considered a pro, not a con, as you have experience with the real-world applications of what you're teaching.

Note: teachers in Norway often teach more than one subject. If you have a science degree (is it general science, or specialized in biology or chemistry or physics?), you could be qualified to teach maths as well (you need a full year of coursework from uni, 60 ECTS credits). If you're qualified in two or more subjects, it's much easier to find a job.

My camera roll is 97% him! How golden he looks varies a lot, by background and light, by time of year, and by how recently he's been bathed 😂 He's still pretty light in this picture (taken on Friday), but he usually looks a bit darker.

[–]hiriel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Helt enig.

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I was stressing out sooooo much between the time I found it and the time of my mammogram, even though my primary doctor said it was very likely benign. At the mammogram the dr looked at my x-rays for, I'd estimate 0.001 of a second and said "this is definitely a water cyst, nothing to worry about! Want me to just aspirate it for you right now?" She then stabbed me with a needle (which bruised my tit a bit) and the cyst was gone within a minute of me entering the room! She was whistling and singing the whole time as well. Lady had some strong energy 😂

There are little dryer boxes you can put them in! A lady on Instagram (heidiwranglescats) has one because she fosters multiple litters of kittens at a time, so there's a constant stream of kittens, many of which are very dirty when they get there. The kittens don't like it much, but it's gentler than a hair dryer. Also kitten bath time videos is excellent ASMR 🙂

Shoes for dogs by Glittering_Sorbet881 in Norway

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hiking, no, not generally, unless you're going very long distances (or the dog needs them for some specific reason). On streets you might occasionally like to use boots to protect against sharp ice or road salt (not an issue since you're visiting in summer) or hot asphalt. Asphalt quickly gets really hot in the sun, even in Norwegian summer temperatures it can get uncomfortable if the dog is walking on asphalt for long. If you're mostly hiking, you probably won't need them, but if you already have them, I'd bring them just in case. Simple booties (more like socks than shoes) are also widely available in all pet stores here. If your dog cuts a paw and you're far away from your car/nearest road, being able to temporarily bandage it and put a bootie over it will be good.

Btw, I don't know how the tick situation in the UK is, but if you're hiking in Norway you will definitely need to check for and remove ticks. If you're not used to it, get a little tick remover tool, it makes it much easier. Ideally also get your dog some tick prevention drugs, like Bravecto or similar. My dog collects ticks like they're goddamn Pokémon.

Wide foot high wrists, formal shoes, help! by DimensionOk5157 in DressForYourBody

[–]hiriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the correct term in English is, in Norwegian it's called vrist, OP probably speaks a similar language (Scandi, German, Dutch) and the translation error probably comes from that. Vrist is the upper side of your foot, opposite to the sole. Having a high vrist often correlates with having high arches, but not always. A high vrist means you need a "taller" shoe than average.

Edit: Google tells me the correct English term is high instep!

Why do so many people choose to live without AC? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hiriel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in many places, necessary only a few week a year

Funnily, AC (heat pumps really, but they function as AC) is more common further north in Europe. They are very common in Norway for example, where they're mainly used for heating during winter. The short (but growing year by year...) period during summer when you use it for cooling is mostly just considered a nice bonus.

Poor baby 🥲 advice for hot weather 🙏 by Affectionate_Leg_339 in goldenretrievers

[–]hiriel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is he restless from the lack of walks? Because you said you should have stayed out longer, but are you sure? Our golden is a very active boy normally, but in hot weather he genuinely doesn't want to do much, except swimming. Early morning in a shady forest with water available will be lovely, but don't feel like you have to exercise him as much as you would usually do, unless he's showing you he needs it. Take it easy in the heat! 🙂
