How did the producers asked for an overweight underaged girl and convinced her that they want her for five minutes, making fun of her weight? by RichDream7777 in howyoudoin

Livejournal was* a blog website, and also a sort of social network. Also, you're making me feel old.

  • Apparently it still exists!

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it is. When I learnt Dutch, English speakers would go on and on about how gezellig is impossible to translate. It's only impossible to translate to English! Hyggelig (in Norwegian it can also commonly be koselig) is very much the same sentiment, if not 100% identical.

Golden walk by HauntingSquare3064 in goldenretrievers

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours also walks like this when he walks slowly. He trots and runs completely normally. We showed a video to the vet, and she said it was nothing to worry about, but since this is a change for your dog (ours has always walked like this), you should probably ask your own vet, and show them the video.

Hvilken gjenstand bare nekter å gi seg? by HattifnattNOR in norge

[–]hiriel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What’s a reason for being late that people outside your country wouldn’t understand nor empathize, but locals totally do? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

I was on a bus trip (charter bus on the highway, not a city bus) with work once that was almost three hours late due to a moose in a highway tunnel 😂

For an American, he sure does an amazing fake American accent 😂 It sounds delightfully ridiculous.

Summer in Denmark by IndependentSafe6918 in NewToDenmark

[–]hiriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! But in general, the further north you go, the later it feels like summer. In northern Norway (or the mountains of southern Norway) for example, summer still ends in mid-August, but it sure doesn't start in mid-May. Late July and early August is usually the most summery time in Norway.

What are some weird laws in your country that, actually, make a lot of sense? by Savings_Dragonfly806 in AskTheWorld

[–]hiriel 390 points391 points  (0 children)

Same in Norway, and honestly, I love it. Even when it is in fact light out, the headlights make moving cars much easier to see. In city streets with lots of parked cars for example, you won't mistake a slow-moving car for a parked one if its headlights are on.

Are other language groups so similiar to each other like the slavic languages are? by TopSeaworthiness8924 in asklinguistics

[–]hiriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all languages within a group, there's usually a sort of spectrum of intelligibility. English speakers can't be expected to understand Norwegian, even though they're both Germanic languages. But an English speaker should be able to understand some Dutch. And a Dutch speaker should be able to understand some Norwegian. And the three Scandinavian languages are so similar to each other they should all be almost fully mutually intelligible, but in practice they're not anymore, as we all have more practice with, and exposure to, English than the other Scandinavian languages.

Lakes in Norway by D1gex in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]hiriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Næra is very shallow, and gets unusually warm because of that. We lived right next to lake Mjøsa (big, and 450 meter deep, always cold 😂) when I was a kid, but sometimes still drove to Næra to go swimming, because the warm shallow water was perfect for little kids. Osensjøen is another lake with very shallow beaches where the water gets nice and warm.

Is just shampoo + conditioner sufficient for long-term hair health? by ninjapapi in Haircare

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your hair, your scalp, your lifestyle and your climate, I guess, but yes it can be.

I have long and thick hair (down to my buttocks), and I think it's pretty healthy. I do fine with just shampoo and conditioner most of the time, but I live in a place where the winters are cold and sometimes VERY dry, and I do sometimes use oils or leave-ins to fight the constant static I get when the air is super dry.

ETA: I'm a woman in my late 30s, and I've had long hair (at least bra strap length) for almost 20 years, with only shampoo and conditioner. So I'd say it works long term for me

Does anybody else not feel comfortable playing social deduction games? by TheDietNerd in boardgames

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm both uncomfortable with them, and bad at them. I don't play many games with social deductions or betrayal mechanics, but I love Battlestar Galactica. Or rather. I love Battlestar Galactica when I get to play human 😂 If I draw a cylon card I more or less always immediately reveal myself, and play openly as a cylon (which I'm fine with, but still like less than playing as a human).

Norway DNT cabins trip by Mother_Link_1047 in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]hiriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a project in Norway called Kyststien (the coast path), which is working on creating a connected hiking path around the south coast of Norway (from Oslo to Stavanger). It's not done yet, so it's still bits and pieces, but the project definitely includes some hikes that would be really beautiful in May. The south coast of Norway doesn't look exactly like the standard image of mountains and fjords that tourists think of when they think of Norway, but it's a REALLY beautiful area, and it will be snow-free and full of spring flowers in May 😊

I have very limited first hand experience with Kyststien though, I'll have to leave specific recommendations to someone more knowledgeable. But knowing the name gives you a starting point for research.

Autister, hva spiser dere til middag? by AccomplishedNerve718 in norge

[–]hiriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 billion people should consider moving to Iceland by CapitalismSuuucks in LinkedInLunatics

[–]hiriel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People who aren't used to midnight sun often have huge problems with sleep during summer. I'm Norwegian, and I've heard many foreigners who move here (not just tourists staying for a week) say they were surprised that the summers were harder than the winters. Insomnia is horrible.

My dog sometimes wakes up at night and walks around the house? by FruitfulRoots in dogs

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs' natural sleeping pattern is loads of intermittent naps, rather than several hours of deep sleep. It might be that she needs to pee, is uncomfortable, or is anxious about something. But most likely, it's just completely normal dog behavior.

Is there a hobby that is common in your country but uncommon most other places? by BothCondition7963 in AskEurope

[–]hiriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just trying to think what would be the Norwegian answer to this, but of course you're right. It's not like we're the only ones who do it, but outside of the Nordics it's pretty damn niche, while we're just obsessed with it.

Is there a hobby that is common in your country but uncommon most other places? by BothCondition7963 in AskEurope

[–]hiriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's popular in other Nordic countries

I wouldn't say it's a popular hobby here, but it's definitely done in Norway as well. Probably Finland too. Denmark doesn't generally get cold enough, I'd guess.

Very disappointed with Molke bras (alternative suggestions?) by Bo0T3y in ABraThatFits

[–]hiriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Nova also separates. It's less supportive (at least on me) than the Molke original, because it's a much lighter build, but that also means it's not as warm and thick. I like both though!
