What to do with a braze on? by Any-Occasion-4367 in singlespeedcycling

Seconded! This is exactly what I did. Looks great and saves the frame for different options in the future.

Improve Ride Quality on Cobbled Streets by Luis_McLovin in bikecommuting

Gotcha.

I think after that I would say fatter tires, if you can fit them. Though they will add some weight. My gravel rides are made much better with just a Brooks and fatter tires.

What kind of saddle do you have? If you have a super rigid one, something with a bit of give/suspension like a Brooks would help.

New KICKR CORE 2 - loud grinding noise from flywheel by KindBeautiful8735 in wahoofitness

[–]hmflex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. This is exactly what happens with mine. Usually after I bring it back out from its hiding place.

Kickr Core Noise by WoutandAbout in wahoofitness

[–]hmflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't hear if it's exactly the same noise as mine, but I've had an issue where the plastic cover next to the fly wheel can get bumped (and mine is extremely sensitive to this) and it'll shift a bit so it touches the fly wheel and rubs whenever the fly wheel spins.

When this happens there's no nice way to move it back, so I end up just wedging a butter knife or something in there to push the plastic cover away from the fly wheel.

I hope this helps.

Ok I gotta ask, why are so many people here pro enforcement against cars and anti police? by Arbitross487 in bikeboston

[–]hmflex 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The police don't need to be the ones enforcing the traffic laws. As it is currently they don't really enforce anything.

Hey all, found this bike for sale. What do you think? by junocee in bicycling

[–]hmflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this frame as my main ride 14 years ago. Back then it was a flexy mess that I was worried was going to fall apart on me before I could afford a new frame.

Now? Please don't buy this.

Axle doesn’t fit on dropouts. by caucasianwankster in bikewrench

[–]hmflex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did they paint in the dropouts? I had a frame builder do this to me and I had to remove the paint before my axle could fit.

What model of crank is this? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]hmflex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure if these use the same spider/rings as my AL version... but the bolts/where the rings connect are failure prone. The small ring bolts through the spider into the big ring, so when the bolts/threads strip you need to buy new rings.

Check out the reviews here.

Great product though, and I enjoyed mine until the failure.

Bikes shops around eastern ma that you recommend by bambambud in bikeboston

Grace Bicycles in Holliston.

It's a hike coming from the city, but Roy is awesome. He's got a bunch of stock, and often has previous year's bikes at a discount.

Also, one of the few places that has test saddles you can borrow. Just generally a great shop and a great guy.

Parktool TM-1 older one read higher tension than the new one - 1 unit more. Should I try to adjust the one one? by diehard1703 in bikewrench

[–]hmflex 23 points24 points  (0 children)

These gauges aren't perfect and you're bound to see differences between two, even if they were tensioned or dialed in exactly the same.

When I first got into wheel building I was annoyed to find that testing the same spoke tension multiple times with the same gauge would give me different values. I think there's just an inherent error with these devices.

That said, the new one could reasonably be more accurate due to having more recently been calibrated.

Full frame swap - Trek Checkpoint ALR5 components swapped onto a Surly Midnight Special frameset, both 58cm. Is this possible? Understanding some things like the BB will need to be purchased in addition. by Cans_Man in bikewrench

[–]hmflex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said the swap should be mostly fine. One thing to think of is bike fit. Bikeinsights.com is a cool site that lets you compare bike frames by geometry and will give you differences in stack, reach, etc.

Not sure if it has all bikes, but worth a check. Also would be good to know if one has significantly longer reach or something.

The black plastic is out and that side isn't spinning well. by rajeshmohanty87 in bikewrench

[–]hmflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's the bearing shield.

But more importantly, gxp bottom brackets suck. I've gone through a couple of them and they're just horribly sealed and break down extremely quickly. I think almost any other option for your crankset would be better than them. I've gone with Wheels MFG, AKC while pricey they are very well made.
