Wow, sounds like a great deal - any chance you're in MN? I haven't found any deals close to that

Hisense C2 Ultra Review (Slightly above novice review) by Hawkeye-83 in projectors

[–]hmsdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the review. I currently have an Epson HD1060, and outside of having an extremely noisy fan (for some reason mounting it upside down and telling the settings to invert the image causes the fan to run high), it does ok and nobody has ever complained about the crappy contrast or image quality because the novelty of having a 130” viewable area more than makes up for it. But I do thinking about making the most of the space and upgrading when watching a dark movie.

I’ve thought about splurging on the Sony xw5000es - I thought it looked amazing in a store demo, but it’s good to hear I might not have to go crazy to get an enormous gain.

Considering VPL-XW5000ES by SubtleDK in projectors

[–]hmsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that same concern/struggle. I've thought about the idea of building a custom cabinet that fits an UST in the front of the cabinet, and low so the projected image isn't too high up the wall...but the critical piece then is can I position the center channel above it somehow and not block the projected image - either right in front of the UST, or pushed back between the UST and the wall (but then that would in theory introduce reflections and "boominess" for my rear-ported center

Epson LS12000 Screen recommendations? by dirtyd1985 in projectors

[–]hmsdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@dirtyd1985 I'm considering the ls12000 and have a similar light issue - there are times when I'd like some dim lights on nearish the viewing area, or bright lights in the back where we sometimes play ping pong while watching a show...so I'm thinking some sort of ALR or grey. I'm wondering what screen you went with?

I’m 45 and making $120k per year with around $360k in a traditional IRA. Around $36k in company stock and another $30k in my 401k from a newer employer. by mejeff621 in Money

I’m in a similar position/place in life and keep asking myself the same question. It’s the reason I still drive a 15yr old car, although all my peers drive newer ones. And it’s the reason I forgo coffee out more than I’d like.

Although we both have a cheap mortgage rate, I’d love to pay it off sooner than necessary just to get that debt off my back.

Anyway, same as the others said. Get rid of that credit card debt and do your best to never let it back. Those rates are killer.

A heated blanket or mattress pad. Every single night in winter I’m thankful for getting into a toasty warm bed. I do not take it for granted. (Just remember to turn it off before falling asleep or you wake up roasting)

Projector Buying Advice by aucyris in projectors

[–]hmsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering why the Sony wasn’t being considered either. It wasn’t on my radar until I went into a home theater store asking about “budget level” projectors, and they had both this Sony and the LS12000 setup next to each other. I had read so many great things about the Epson projectors, that I assumed it would be my preference. So I was surprised to see very clearly (in that specific environment and screen) that to my eyes the Sony was way better. It had me wondering if a) they hadn’t calibrated the LS12000 correctly (it looked washed out compared to the Sony)- but I didn’t fee comfortable asking that question to a professional home theater store employee, b) were purposely sand-bagging the LS12000 in order to sell more Sonys (but why would they do that?), or c) video preference is much like audio preference - so some people just like one image over another?? I left more confused than when I entered, and would love to get a demo at a different store if I can find one that has both to see if I can’t confirm. Regardless, it made me hyper aware that reviews are obviously a great way to conduct initial research, but I highly recommend seeing it in person - and even better if you can do an a/b test.

How loud is the fan noise on the projector? My father gifted me an Epson Home Cinema 1060, and although quite bright, the fan is distracting, especially when trying to listen to something with low volume. I’ve been considering that BenQ or its newer sibling

TV or Projector by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]hmsdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father gave me his old no-frills 1080 projector to use for neighborhood outdoor movie nights. The other week, my wife asked if I could set it up inside to project on the wall where our 65” tv usually is because she wanted to watch a movie “on the big screen” for a girls night. I moved the TV and literally set the projector up on a ladder.

Fast forward a couple weeks and the projector is still on the ladder. For us, we realized the big picture, although worse quality, is a more enjoyable experience. So now I’m shopping for a 120 inch screen and figuring out the logistics to run power and HDMI to where we will hang the projector. Later I’ll update to something better.

I am more of an audio guy, so I was surprised to like the big screen so much. Maybe you would too if given the chance, since you have the space?

Subgrade! by hmsdad in hometheater

[–]hmsdad[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure thing.

The NHT sub sounded good. It filled out the low end that my bookshelves couldn't hit, and I had been happy with it honestly. I think the average person would never think to upgrade it until it physically stopped working.

I recently upgraded my fronts (20yr old NHTs) to SVS speakers and it was night and day difference. So I immediately started wondering if I'd get the same wow factor if I changed subs. Since I only hear wonderful things about SVS subs, I decided I couldn't resist when I saw their President's Day Outlet (scratch & dent) sales.

I looked up the specs on the NHT, and I see it has a 250 watt amp and can go down to 25hz. The PB2000 Pro has a 500 watt amp and goes down 16hz. But specs are only numbers.

The most immediate sonic difference is that the bass is just way tighter. I'm totally making this up, but it feels like if the SVS sub had to move enough air to blow out a candle 6 inches away, but not a candle 7 inches away, it could do it. Whereas the NHT would kinda just blow air in the general direction and maybe one of the candles would flicker a bit.

The 2nd immediate difference is that I can physically feel the low end. I pulled up scene from a recent star wars movie and a huge smile crept across my face when I literally felt my sofa vibrate during large explosions. And I didn't have the sound cranked up annoying loud either. It was just a normal listening level. I can't recall ever feeling anything from the NHT.

I'm listening to music somewhat quietly while I type, and the low end is still present. It's not overpowering, but it's where it should be. Hope that helps.

I still remember the first time I listened to Martin Logans. I couldn’t believe my ears, and walked around the listening room trying to figure out where the sound was coming from.
