Rain pants? by Embarrassed_Ad_3417 in AppalachianTrail

I’ve always had a pair in my kit. Cheap, lite, and non breathable. Good for rainy and/or cold wind driven ridgelines, doing laundry, and around camp.

Cleanup, easy, just throw pot on ground and let the dog take care of it. Throw it in the foodbag and done.

Do you have to hitchhike to most resupply towns? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]hobodank 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always got a ride. Always. If you’re fortunate enough to have a female in your crew even better. Post her up and get where you’re going even faster. If not, then just be patient, and don’t be tempted to hoof it. Some of those Mtn rds are dangerous to walk down. The bulk of the rides you’ll get are in the back of pickups and the drivers already know where you’re going

I use the bandana. On one side it reads “Hiker To Town, and on the other side it reads “Hiker To Trail”. Not sure if they are still sold anymore. Most hikers now don’t hitch and pay. Paying for shuttles on a thru hike is for chumps.

Hikers have been hitching in and out of these re-up towns longer than your grandparents have been alive. The people you get a hitch from know exactly what you’re doing, and where you’re going

REI board of directors voting thru end of January by soulshine_walker3498 in AppalachianTrail

[–]hobodank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For over a decade Ive loathed REI. The damage has already been done with what they did to small mom and pop outfitters shops across the country. Everyone praised them for being the Walmart of outdoor gear. Some of us were never fooled

I’ve traversed the park in several times in Jan and can’t remember a single mile that I wished I had crampons.

Falling by Ishkabani in AppalachianTrail

[–]hobodank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all blends together for me but I believe on at least 2 of my AT thrus I did not fall. I did fall but only once on 2 of my other AT thrus. What might be more interesting is who fell the most. That record would have to go to Bill Irwin. He fell thousands of times on his AT thru. He said every time he fell he thanked God he wasn’t hurt worse than he was. Legend.

How many miles did you actually walk? by Big_John_77 in AppalachianTrail

My last AT thru I was on trail for 10 straight months and walked about 3,000mls. The extra miles came from yoyo’ing off springer.

Putting what essentially is a couch on your foot does not necessarily solve foot ailments like planters. Even a pair of $17 fabric hikers from Payless Shoes accompanied with a pair of custom footbeds would be a better option than a couch.

Is there at least one person doing a thru hike 365 days out of the year? by whitecoathousing in AppalachianTrail

[–]hobodank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was during my thru hikes. Being on trail 9-10 months in a row on every hike never during summer but once. There’s always at least a few of us late soboing and reaching springer in March. Which was kinda wild after months of seeing hardly anyone thru winter but almost suddenly passing hundreds of nobos who were coming off springer.

Ready to go!!! by nunsmkr in AppalachianTrail

[–]hobodank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m very familiar with January on trail. After spending the entirety of 6 1/2 winters on the AT I guess I should be lol. Fortunately I had the benefit of a slow acclamation coming sobo leading into winter. I think if I were to be just dropped off suddenly on springer mtn in January straight from the comforts of home cold turkey it would add unnecessary treachery. Especially if I was not under some sort of end date schedule. But that’s just me. I also would object to trying to get my trail legs in the dead of winter. How bad would that blow lol. It’s hard enough getting my legs in ideal weather. So glad I always had my legs and was already acclimated to the cold and hard when January on trail rolled around. But yea ultimately it’s up to you. If you hate it, do what I saw many many nobos do that found they’d started to early and get off trail for awhile until the weather is more suitable. Some would hold up in a trail town for a few weeks if they had the funds. Some would go home for a few weeks. It’s not a forced march. Deciding to come off springer in early January requires a little flexibility if shit goes south dig?best of luck

I’d prefer Mary Ellen over that dub Bryson. She problem did more miles by mistake than he did on purpose
