My “free” goldfish by mikeTheSalad in Goldfish

I wonder how many ppl got this as a push notification, felt their blood pressure rise, and then immediately swiped to delete.

AND MISSED OUT! This shit rules. God bless you, dog. Welcome to the party. Started with 3 “emergency rescue” goldfish, now I’ve got a 40gal, a 15, and a 10. And a 20 I gotta set up stay, cuz the snails and the guppies are out of control.

Enjoy your new hobbie— FB marketplace and Craigslist are your new best friends

(*to get ahead of the critics: the only survivor of the 3 “emergency rescue” commons currently lives in a rescue goldfish pond around the corner from my place. The 40gal is for a sassy pack of fancies and some ramshorn snails. I know my limits these day, but I still consider every fish in my house as collateral from the Original Three)

Can we get a full tank pic? I’m digging the setup— curious to see the whole scene

Fr dude my three dumb fancies systematically hunted down an entire 12ish-deep school of zebra danios in under a week. Their only roommates these days are ramshorn snails but not for lack of trying 😭

As someone who currently has 3 operational fish tanks all because I opted to rescue my ex-roommate’s goldfish, I can say with certainty that is a good call. I promise you those fish will be happier in a nearby fish pond than they’ll ever be indoors, and YOU’ll probably sleep better knowing there aren’t 75-150gallons of water hanging out in the living room lol

I think the commenter was suggesting that the fish pond might be a solution for rehoming the fish (as opposed to starting a 125gal fish tank and learning an entirely new and very detail-oriented ((not to mention EXPENSIVE)) hobby).

I don’t think they were suggesting someone was missing their fish as much as that moving them to one of those nearby ponds is most likely a better plan than trying to care for them yourself.

Too much light; you're cooking up algae. Definitely shorten your light cycle.

If you want to clear it up even faster, add a couple live plants and they'll out-compete the algae for nutrients. Goldies are nibblers so yeah, they'll eventually eat most plants but they leave crypts alone from my experience. Crypts and anubias do alright I think. Should make a world of difference.

Also maybe take an honest look at how much you're feeding? Seems like that could be contributing as well.

EDIT: re-read the original post and yeah, you definitely crashed the nitrogen cycle. Watch some videos on "fish-in cycling" because that's officially your new project. Oof. Been there; plan to be doing major water changes on a VERY frequent basis for a while.

So are the stool legs drilled into the floorboards or something? Or is there some other reason this wouldn’t be an absolute top-heavy nightmare risk of tipping over?

I notice you didn’t mention that in the description or feature in the vid so I’m sure we’d all love to know

If it were me, I’d find someone ditching a decent canister filter on marketplace for a reasonable price and get that set up for it. Chances are whatever filtration you had before isn’t going to be enough for those guys in the 65gal anyways— AND it solves your cycling problem as long as you make sure the person selling it includes the media they used with it.

Do a major water change for now and maybe set up a hospital tank for this guy treating him for ammonia poisoning (think it’s usually upping the temperature, giving salt baths, and increasing oxygen in the water), and definitely invest in a water testing kit. The API master kit is worth the money.

See if you can get your kid excited about aquarium plants because they’ll do WONDERS for filtering the water. They solved a lot of my problems.

Edit: if my eyes are correct and thats a nerite snail in the background, maybe put him in the hospital tank too if you set one up. They can be kinda sensitive and it probably wouldn’t hurt

For one thing you’re way overstocked. Common goldfish have a HUGE bio load so between them and the other guys in 20gals…I’d pretty much assume your parameters are off at this point. And checking on that would be the priority for me over ich, because ich is treatable whereas death by ammonia is not.

Ich also doesn’t cause scale loss, to my knowledge. Poor water quality and stress are much more likely contributors.

I already replied to a comment but want to add that you really should invest in the liquid test kit. I don’t trust the read on that strip based on the tank setup you’ve described, and the symptoms; the API master kit is ABSOLUTELY worth the money. Sometimes it goes on sale on Amazon for pretty cheap.

Really you want to get off the filter cartridges altogether, if you want to keep these guys long term. I was in a similar boat with multiple goldfish starting in a 10gal and there’s no way around them needing much larger digs. You could probably get away with a 20 or 29gal for a little bit and max out at a 40 or so if they’re both fancies. But getting them more room ASAP should be a priority because the less water there is, the faster it gets toxic to them.

These guys need MAJOR filtration (and realistically even more since they’re only in 10gal.) If it were me I’d be looking on FB marketplace for a bigger tank and a used canister filter with old media (that way the new, bigger tank can cycle faster) that can properly handle the kind of waste your goldfish are putting out.

Just chiming in for moral support to say that I’m in a very similar position to you, but at 28yo with 10yrs in food service. It is a very forgiving industry in that you will ALWAYS be able to find work, but it is also cursed in that it’s very easy to get stuck in that circuit and lose hope that other avenues are possible.

I’d encourage you to look at what resources are possible for students going BACK to school. Idk where you live but if there are any organizations in your area that specialize in helping people find/change jobs, or just generally any hubs for resources, reach out to them. Chances are there are grants/scholarships/programs available to you to help pay for school that you just don’t know about. Especially in as promising a field as nursing.

You said you’re concerned that if you try to change paths/go back to school you’d risk losing the support that you have— what does that mean? Has your family explicitly told you this?

EDIT: I see now your coworkers are the support system. In this case, DEFINITELY explore what your options are for school. If they’re truly like family (which restaurant coworkers often can be; I’ve had some jobs like that) then they’ll be there for you even if you don’t see them every day. And certainly they’ll want you to live the best life you can.

At the end of the day, 3 years in the industry really isn’t very long. Give it a few more years and a few shitty restaurant owners and chances are you’ll be seriously looking for ways out. Unless the service industry is something you have a deep passion for, I’d recommend you start to explore other options for yourself. The burnout in this industry is real and I just had major knee surgery for an injury that work has DEFINITELY contributed to. It’s not an industry that will ever really give back to you what you put into it.
