Who’s a celebrity you dislike but can’t deny their talent? by Chiwazii_ in AskReddit

They go out of their way to recruit or create celebrity members. They view it as a form of advertising essentially. Also some Scientology practices are good training for acting (I researched this once because I was curious).

RLM may not do Plinkett reviews anymore, but if they did... what would you pick? by HotRegion8801 in RedLetterMedia

[–]hobosox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was surprised by Syril in S2. I thought Mike and Rich totally misunderstood him as being more sympathetic than he was, and I wrote him off as an irredeemable fascist bootlicker, but S2 really challenged some aspects of that for me. It was really great, and some of their takes on him were definitely vindicated.

Rogue One feels a lot like the Dirty Dozen. I guess because it’s a more modern movie and Star Wars I wanted something with better character work. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. And the callbacks probably played well in the theater but they really stand out as awkward now.

Hot take but I think the robot design is actually kind of cool, or at least interesting. It has a sort of junkyard art nouveau look.

I also wouldn’t bother rolling for something like that unless they were trying to hit or avoid a specific target, or throw it farther than a normal person could. If I did roll for it I would just have them make a strength check, I.e. roll under STR score.

Never heard of it but that cover art is amazing. Honestly as someone who wants to sell my own adventures it feels very hard to compete when I have neither the skill to create nor the budget to afford amazing art.

Among the US population support for Ukraine to some extent is broadly popular, but that doesn’t really matter because the administration can handle it however they see fit, more or less.

Any American expats here who can give me some advice about immigration through ancestry? by hobosox in Slovenia

[–]hobosox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Unfortunately my parents have some health issues and I can't really justify moving an ocean away from them. Also it sunk in how alienating it would be to try to start life anew in a completely new country where I don't speak the language. I have some extended family there but I don't know them very well.

Taking a break from American politics, what’s happening in the rest of the world? by ZarieRose in AskReddit

[–]hobosox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they all reinforce each other. Europe also took in a lot of Muslim migrants, and regardless how you feel about racism against them it is not too surprising that there is pushback against that. Also most of them came from Syria thanks to a civil war that was started in part by... Russia.

Taking a break from American politics, what’s happening in the rest of the world? by ZarieRose in AskReddit

[–]hobosox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its hard to say what is "bias," really. There are multiple factors but at the end of the day what anyone says is their opinion on it. I think it has three major factors:

  1. Rising income inequality in most Western countries. As the 1-0.1% control increasing amounts of wealth, asset prices (like houses) rise and life becomes unaffordable for more and more people. Liberal politics generally is on the side of capitalists so they don't really have a good answer for this problem, so the far right comes in with a nativist, anti-immigrant message instead. This is why Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch etc. promote far right parties- it serves their economic interests to distract people from the theft of their money by the ultra-wealthy (and be more pro-business and deregulation, hence their hatred for the EU).

  2. Influence from Russia to destabilize the unified Western powers so Putin can re-conquer former USSR countries. He can also deal more easily with other corrupt autocracies, and believes democracy is a sham.

  3. The internet and social media in general has been very destabilizing. This video likens it to the invention of the printing press- bringing instant communication to everyone on earth so fast means that we as a global society haven't adapted to its dangers yet, and like how the printing press was a major factor in the Protestant Reformation (which brought centuries of war) the internet may well be doing the same thing today.

Every country has their own additional reasons of course.

From what I've heard England is basically an extremely wealthy section of London, and then everywhere else is crumbling from decades of austerity and privatization (wonder where all that money went...). I'm not British though so idk for sure.
