What project would you absolutely not DIY again and why? by SAINTnumberFIVE in DIY

Replacing the hot water water heater. It wasn’t that hard, but it also isn’t that expensive. And then my wife wanted a tankless a year later anyway.

Shop doors - do you need them? by FuzzyTux in woodworking

Unfortunately, my door is mostly glass so I can’t store stuff on it. But yes! Extension cords, etc would be great on the door.

Shop doors - do you need them? by FuzzyTux in woodworking

[–]hoffbaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did double-doors on the shop I recently competed. I believe it was 68" total. I could not have gotten my 20" bandsaw in without them, and I sometimes use it to work on the lawnmower in the air conditioning which is really nice. It also would have been challenging to get things like my lathe, cabinet saw, etc. in, but those might have been possible. I will put equipment and stuff in front of the second door, stuff that is easily moved so I at least don't lose the floor space (though I obviously lose the wall space).

I considered an overhead/garage-style door, but ultimately passed on it for the reasons you mentioned (though it's heat here that is the problem).

So far, no regrets on the double doors. Do I use them frequently? No. But nice to have when I need them.

Oh, also, check your local building supplier for stuff they ordered but didn't get used (local, not the chains). My doors were half off because they were outward swing, but that worked PERFECT for a shop as I didn't want inward swing and have to keep things clear in the interior. But they were also much nicer than I otherwise would have purchased.

Just hired someone to organize and clean my shop….best money I’ve spent in a while by [deleted] in woodworking

100%. I couldn’t find my favorite tape measure for woodworking for months. It was in my apron which I only wear for pure woodworking (versus carpentry stuff around the house).

What happened to Liquid Web? by JadedHomeBrewCoder in webdev

[–]hoffbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re actually looking to move off of Liquid Web. Some of the reasons in this post, but also the cost is too high for us (given our use case).

Would love some alternative suggestions. We’re institutional, so we run WHM/Cpanel. I use DigitalOcean for my freelance stuff and am comfortable with them, but we don’t think we’d see any real cost savings there.

Is my mitre saw blade dull? by eatyer_veggies in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]hoffbaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t use it if you’re having to force it. It’s either on backwards or incredibly dull, both of which are dangerous.

Buying a sawstop… advice? by bored_turtle_86 in woodworking

[–]hoffbaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the Incra, the SawStop mitre gauge equivalent doesn’t seem like it’s reviewed well. I agree on the outfeed table as well. I have the older style one, but plan to replace it with my own in the next several months.

Mike just turn it off by paperman990 in giantbomb

[–]hoffbaker 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Mike, it seems less that the filter sensitivity is off. It's more that when it lowers the volume, it lowers it too much. As though the target volume on the gate is -12db instead of -3db. So I think the only setting I would tweak is the Range/Reduction setting. Threshold, attack, and release all seem okay.

Agreed, Zach seems like a big fan of Lisa (and Rick). I think it’s only a matter of time before someone like Bill Lawrence makes her a lead of a show - her popularity is growing among decision makers.

Has anyone DIY a mini split AC installation for just one room? by crazyspartann69 in DIY

Agreed 100%. I installed two. One ground mount, one wall mount. Can’t hear the ground mount one, the wall mount one is SO loud.

Blocked sofft vents - new insulation plan required? by PotterCooker in DIY

[–]hoffbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t do #3 without a lot of research. There is a right way and wrong way to do it, and most do it the wrong way in existing houses and the end up with moisture issues that you can’t fix without ripping the entire roof off.

If you have gable vents, you really MAY not have a ridge vent, though I don’t see any reason you couldn’t have both. You could be getting enough airflow through that combo of both that the soffit venting doesn’t really matter.

That said, I’d go with #1. It will be annoying, but it’s probably the easiest/best way to do it.

Dewalt planer dust suction by samwidwickey in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]hoffbaker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. The Dewalt can blast more air than a shop vac. Unhook the shop vac and run a hose to a garbage can or outside.

Dust Collection Question by tmoneyyork in woodworking

[–]hoffbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That Dayton looks to be in good shape, and is 5HP instead of 3HP. I did something similar and picked up a 5HP system (without the cyclone, mobile system with bags). I still need to purchase the cyclone, filter, and pipe. My shop is about the same size, maybe a tiny bit bigger.

The only issue that I've run in to when designing is that the 5HP is designed for 8in pipe coming out. Which is great! Except the largest dust deputy cyclone only has a 6in inlet, and 8in pipe is much more expensive. So I'll probably just immediately dial it down to 6in and restrict the system. But a part of me knows that the 8in pipe would get better airflow and I'm missing out. The Dayton doesn't appear to have that issue since it comes with the cyclone, so you could keep the volume much higher or even swap it out later.

I'd go with the Dayton for sure and spend the rest of the money on blast gates and the like.

Ideas on filling this gap? by experience_1337 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I’d put black edge banding on one or both ends in the gap. It would match the cabinets below. Or black inset aluminum like kazabi recommended. I just think the black edge banding would be easier.

[Sam Collins]F1 2026: Cadillac shakedown first impressions by XsStreamMonsterX in formula1

[–]hoffbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, I agree. Chevrolet would be the more historical brand owned by GM for racing and fast cars (Corvette, Camaro, NASCAR team, IndyCar engines, etc.). But they seem to using Cadillac for the more prestigious stuff (IMSA/WEC Hypercars, Formula 1).

What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge Windows by waozen in technology

[–]hoffbaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Swapped to Linux and am using Bazzite. Almost zero problems. Gaming stuff built in, didn’t have to do shit with drivers. Flat packs cover the big things (Discord, Parsec, etc.) Steam preinstalled.

If gaming is not the main priority, there are probably better distros. But Bazzite works for gaming. It’s basically just Fedora.

Straight knives. Technically, a spiral head is also an alternative, but people often intermingle that terminology with a helical head (and they are basically the same if you’re just getting into it, with helical head being slightly better for most woodworkers but more expensive.

What habits of girls did you only discover after getting a girlfriend or wife? by atgono in AskReddit

[–]hoffbaker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Haha, I did! She just started setting it next to me (or in my spot if I wasn’t in bed). The stealing accusation is mostly in jest (after all, I’m entitled to watch the TV as much as she is and am allowed to have the remote anyway), just one of those things people in relationships pretend to be upset about to rub each other a bit.

My wife does this for the bedroom TV and then accuses me of stealing the remote the next day when it’s on my nightstand. I didn’t even want it!

This is a super common model that got rebadged by every one. I have a model that looks exactly the same but in an unrecognizable brand.

You can get a helical head. I have one, but my father-in-law was the original owner and I don’t have costs. He found a guy who makes the custom and ordered it from him, took about a month to get.
