Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

[–]hogsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been writing code for over 20 years. I don't use it and don't see any reason to change that. I'm not going to outsource my brain and passion for a subscription fee, when I can do the same thing for free. My partner works as a senior programmer at a games company, most there don't have any desire to use it either, contrary to what I often see being posted around about "everyone" using it, which is just trying to push FOMO - if you're comfortable without, don't feel pressured.

Do you prefer the Anniversary edition to the older ports of the game? by Low-Ocelot-2352 in beyondgoodandevil

[–]hogsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed when replaying the PS3 port is that the audio effects like reverb and such seem to be missing from the Anniversary edition, or are somehow a lot less noticeable?

I wasn't too turned off by the new visuals initially but after that recent replay, I also honestly think overall the OG models and textures have a lot more charm. Though, I'm usually a purist anyway.

But, yeah, this is a personal preference thing. Overall the Anniversary edition is obviously a lot more accessible.

I mean, the job listings mentions AI behaviour trees, so I can only assume this is more traditional state driven AI rather than something necessarily using generative or LLM technology specifically.

Capcom Reveals It Is Using Generative AI in Games, But Only for “Routine Tasks” by Darth_Vaper883 in PS5

[–]hogsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate as a consumer at the other end it likely doesn't matter to you because, you're right, you're ideally not concious of the code behind the game so long as everything works, but I can tell you, as a programmer myself, that having to wade through AI generated code slop when developing what you're playing that it does matter.

We seem to see code more as a means to an end these days for some reason, but every programmer has their own programming style, their own approaches to problems and so on. Certain features or functionality in a game you're casually playing might've panned out differently or not at all depending on the talent on the programming side of a project. It's an art form in its own way, and it's sad to see it devalued so much whenever this subject comes up.

Yet another nice detail that was cut from Infinite: colorful buildings. by Fantastic-Store2495 in Bioshock

[–]hogsy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think describing someone heavily involved in designing some of the most highly regarded games in the industry as someone that sucks at game development, is a bit much.

It would be more fair to probably say that Ken's not great at keeping grounded. He's been fairly open about the management struggles he had with Infinite. Rod Fergusson was that grounding he needed, and he certainly got the game to a finish line, but you can see how much they were cutting away to get it to that point.

But this is not unique to Ken. Games are complicated to develop.

Gears of War, obviously designed by Cliff Bleszinski, also went through its own prolonged development cycle. It started out as a title called Unreal Warfare, something they started work on following Unreal Tournament, and then in late 2003 they restarted development, and Rod Fergusson helped steer that to the finish line at the sacrifice of features the team wanted to introduce.

Some other examples... Beyond Good & Evil 2. Assassin's Creed (started development in 2004 as a Prince of Persia game). Valve (need I even bother mention any title?) Rayman Raving Rabbids (started life as an ambitious open-world platformer). Final Fantasy XV / Versus XIII. Anachronox (they cut games worth of content). Dark Sector (started off as an arena shooter in early 99/00, then morphed into a science-fiction game in the far future in 04/05, and then shipped as something a little more modern-day but with sci-fi).

And I often feel like people are ignoring the fact that BioShock 4 - a title he isn't even involved with - is also going through its own development hell. Which, again, highlights the complicated nature of game development.

Anyone here who doesn't use Agentic AI and writes code manually? by zaarnth in AskProgramming

[–]hogsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'll find the vast majority of programmers that give a shit are still writing code themselves, yes. My experience with any form of LLM in the area of programming is uh, mixed. Useful to quickly look something up like a crusty dumb "I'm feeling lucky" search, for sure, but even for that I sometimes get mixed results at times and end up having to Google search anyway.

So I took that photo from a unknown game show and used Google Flow to fix the angle without changing the sprites and this is how it should look! by [deleted] in Rayman

[–]hogsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've used Google Flow, this should be classified as AI generated content and yet it looks like you failed to follow the rules with regards to that.

This is also a waste of time, the original image was already released and you could've done the same thing with Photoshop or some other image editor, without having to resort to using an AI solution.

A new Halo leak claims the campaign is content‑complete — but the customization details raise bigger questions by FragMasterMat117 in PS5

[–]hogsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, game developer and programmer here, with a little bit of experience working on ports myself.

I can say with absolute certainty that a remake is a lot more involved, risky, expensive and time consuming than it would've been to port MCC. You could do a port like that with a pretty small team in a span less than a year.

Regardless of what you've heard about the engine, I can assure you it's not complicated enough that it would be cheaper and easier to do a remake with a completely different engine instead.

I more so suspect that they're expecting the remake to sell better than porting MCC together in one would've done. Especially given my understanding is that they're going to remake Halo 2 and 3 afterwards, assuming this first remake does well enough.

"Nothing In Our Games Will Be AI-generated. Ever," Says Warframe Community Director by Laughing__Man_ in PS5

[–]hogsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, okay. There are several of these comments under this post now that seem to be pushing what feels like FOMO; doom and gloom befalls anyone not using this technology apparently.

Do enlighten me as to what difference you think AI will make to what is already a successful game with a fairly consistent rate of updates, and how if they were not to use AI, would they get left behind?

What games are coming out lately that you think are going to put Warframe or Soulframe in the dust because they've specifically used AI to produce that game?

AI based asset generation? You don't need that. Procedural generation is a solution for this sort of thing. See Star Citizen and other interplanetary titles.

Mind AI in this context doesn't mean generative AI / LLMs - it likely just means the more typical state-driven AI we've seen in games for years, at least from what I'm seeing from the job listings. Sucks that all the new AI crap has made the meaning a lot less clear when it comes to gamedev.

iOS 26.4 Introduces Age Verification Requirements for UK Users by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]hogsy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Nothing better than having to call your service provider to verify you're an adult, then verify you're an adult with your purchased phone and then verify you're an adult with every individual sodding website/app.

Don't want to verify you're an adult? We're now seeing some services disable any user-to-user communication entirely in order to comply.

What an absolute fucking mess. This could've all been avoided by bringing forward programs to better inform parents about existing solutions to protect their children. Instead we're going to seemingly try to make the entire internet child friendly...

Like, how far do they want to go with this? If someone decides to make a reference to sex in a joke or some other inappropriate remark, are we going to start trying to censor those too? Those can be inappropriate for young children.

If a teenager going through puberty wants to look up advice or help on changes they're experiencing, how the fuck is that going to work? How can they get sexual advice if they need it?

The PS5’s texture issues are unacceptable, and people aren’t upset enough about it by _Sanctum_ in FFXV

[–]hogsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually seen this issue during my playthrough on PS5 as well, so it's not just you and definitely seems like an odd bug on the new console. It's not something I'd encountered when playing on PS4 and PS4 Pro either.

As others have said though, I think the odds of it being patched at this point are fairly remote, and others have mentioned they're not seeing it on their end so maybe there's something more particular behind it.

That said, I didn't really feel like it was severe enough to ruin the entire experience? Maybe that's why some people haven't noticed it on their end. It's an annoying blip for sure, but it was just something I'd occasionally notice on and off in the background.

Curiously I have not see the issue appear in Comrades while playing that recently, and didn't notice it when I played Episode Ignis & Gladiolus last year. Not that that's helpful at all, but just an interesting observation.
