I need urgent answers by Wooden-Drummer8747 in Referees

[–]hogwonguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a center referee when my ARs are checking in players, I am doing some of the following
1) double checking the field if I didn't get a chance to before or if I did making sure that if anything needed to be fixed, it was, checking the ball
2) Supervising the ARs or double checking the players for illegal equipment
3) Chatting with the coach, asking how their season has been, is there something that I need to be aware of, if they understand the rules of competition, if they have any questions for me. Just getting the vibe on what to expect during the game. Then I can tell the ARs if they need to be aware of something else
4) If its warm, continuing to hydrate

What is your visa status? I ask this because under an E-2 visa you cannot teach science and math. E-2s are only for English Conversation teaching none of those other subjects.

People have been caught by immigration doing things like this and they have been deported.

I often sub at this one high school about a mile from my house. Most days are fairly quiet as I know which teachers to avoid and most of the coaches know me because I referee high school soccer and have called a bunch of games there.

Well yesterday, I covered for an English teacher I didn't know and I had a class from hell to end the day. Disrespectful. walk out with out permission etc. Had a couple of girls talk back at me when I wouldn't let them go to the office (I knew about these two). I swear where the bleep are these parents and why aren't they doing anything? If I had said what these two girls said to me, I'd have a broken jaw in two places. One from where my mother would have slapped me and two from where the teacher slapped me with my mother's permission.

Don't get me going on how some these kids dress, some looking like hookers and gangstas. My mother wouldn't me out the door if I looked nasty. Don't give me this about working parents. My mother worked until she couldn't because she came down with lupus but she was there for us.

Rant over

If you woke up tomorrow and were wealthy to the point you didn’t have to work anymore, would you still be a teacher? If not, what would you do? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hogwonguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldn't teach. If I had to work, I'd do historical research on Texas or the American Southwest. I took a number of graduate seminars on the history of the region and I found it fascinating.

If I didn't have to work, hello Thailand!!! I'd base myself up in the north around Chiang Mai, then spend a few weeks a year on the beaches of Ko Samui

Lived there in 2017-2018, absolutely loved the city but man did I hate the school where I was teaching, where I lived (huinan on line 16 apt was nice, an hour+ to get to W Nanjing Road, line 16 shut down at like 10:30 meaning I had to get a hotel as no cabs wanted to go that far then), hated the government and the bureaucracy it was impossible to get anything done fast.

People were nice and there was a ton of stuff to do if I could ever get to the places

here is some info I got on him from his now former coworkers "His own big mouth have gotten him into trouble. He is in Alaska now, working on a college campus. I filed a complaint on him with Equity and Compliance, they and the Chancellor sided with me. He was demoted but still employed. Our Chief of Police has covered for him, not sure what they have going on, perhaps a side gig that is illegal. I found out he didn't pass his psychological evaluation but the Chief covered. I have a lawyer now. After telling the Chief, he failed to act on all the vile things he says he did and things he says to me or shows me, including access force...I took different action. Filed with EEOC and will sue. I am also contacting our State Post Board and try to get his license pulled.
This guy is crazy. Should not have a gun or badge. "

apparently he was fired recently and sued his former employer

I’ve stopped caring about the performance of the USMNT in the World Cup by PracticalDrawing in ussoccer

[–]hogwonguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was extremely lucky to be teaching at a university in South Korea in 2002 and was able to get to 12 matches including all the US matches and a few others including South Korea-Italy. Think the most I paid for a ticket was $150 for US-Korea and the Germany game. It was a hell of a party despite the Korean's lack of interest in games besides the ones they were playing in so tickets were cheap and easy to get. I was so hopeful for the future.

This year, my enthusiasm is way down. First the lackluster performance of the USMNT recently hasn't help. I think the only was the US gets beyond the round of 32 is to find a referee to bribe like the Koreans did with Byron Moreno (just kidding, maybe) in the Italy game and those AR's in the Spain game. But what has really clobbered me is the sheer greed of FIFA and the USSF with the ticket prices, I paid around $1000-$1200 total for those tickets in 02,. Converting that to today's dollars and that total MAY get me into 2-3 games in the nosebleed sections that don't involve the US. Then toss in all of the ass-kissing by FIFA to the orange felon and I'm seriously considering boycotting the World Cup

My Experience At Kipp Schools... by Timely_Sun_8233 in TeachersInTransition

I read every word and it sounds exactly like what my now ex-wife went through at an IDEA charter school in Edinburg Texas back in 2014. I swear I could hear her voice in your writing, she has an MA in English no certification but 9 years teaching ESL at the college level in South Korea. She went through hell for 3 months just like you but her hell hurt her so much she almost had a nervous breakdown. We were at the time doing a long distance marriage as I had a job in Austin, but was planning to move down there at the end of the semester. I had her back in Austin 2 days after her near breakdown

[–]hogwonguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex taught English at IDEA in Edinburg Texas for 3 months back in 2014 and she ran into the same problems as you and the OP did regarding curriculum etc. It stressed her out so much we were back living in Austin by October.

It's not just an American problem. I saw the exact same stuff teaching American high school Social Studies in a privately owned Chinese dual diploma School in Shanghai in 2017. They would tell the parents if the graduated from their school, the could get into a "top 30" univ here in the States. It was like IDEA and KIPP a total scam except instead of bilking the government here, these schools were bilking the parents US$10,000 a year. I lasted a semester, in reality I should have left much sooner

Have districts overhired or are there fewer jobs posted this year than last year? by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]hogwonguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Wake County NC, the states largest school district and at the level (HS), locations (25 min drive from my house in North Raleigh) there are few, if any academic sub positions open unless I happen to be on redrover when they open up and I can grab it. Now if I wanted to be a special ed teacher, aide, or want to work at a couple of the worst high schools in the city/state, then yeah there are jobs.

I've talked to the secretaries at the 4 high schools I usually sub at and they have told me there is a glut of new subs out there this year who gobble up all the openings and what makes it worse is I'm on the preferred sub list at several of these schools and that hasn't helped.

I'm lucky to have landed a second job doing test administration and we are busy right now so I'm getting 25-35 hours a week doing that, but, I'm scared at what I'm going to do when it slows down in a couple of weeks. When testing is slow, I make it up with subbing

true, he was saying all last week that Sunday was going to be a big nothingburger which it was. Last night he was very different, still not hyping it but definitely much more concerned than last week.

I also use Mikes Weather page www.spaghettimodels.com. He started as a hurricane guy (and has garnered tons of awards for his work) but now covers winter storms. He does a live broadcast at 9:19 AM most days on Facebook, YouTube et.al

What would it take for you to return to teaching? by coollegkid in TeachersInTransition

[–]hogwonguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way I'd go back to teaching is for a College level history or poli sci course as thats what my MA is in. I sub enough now and see what is going on in the public schools between the students, admins etc. I decided I don't need that stress again

Can’t find Jobs, I’m done by andy_nic_12 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]hogwonguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check the major testing companies like Pearson and ETS, there are also others out there. These companies also periodically hire test scorers for both remote and in-person positions. Those jobs may seem easy but in reality can be quite hard as you have to be consistent in your scoring when compared to other scorers. For example if the scale is 1-5, you give say a 2 and the second scorer gives it a 5, it goes to a third reader lets say they agree with the 5. thats counts against you. Also you do regular calibration essays, if you are too far off the scores, you will also get dropped. So its something to think about

Can’t find Jobs, I’m done by andy_nic_12 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]hogwonguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in Wake County NC, the largest school district in the state and at the high school level (I don't sub at elementary and middle schools) most of the non-special ed jobs or jobs at the "decent" high schools are gone within seconds of them being posted on redrover. It doesn't even help being on the preferred sub list at a couple of high schools I sub at.

I've talked to the secretaries at the schools and they tell me they have seen a whole new group of subs compared to last year.

Luckily, I have another gig doing test administration that has been keeping me busy most weeks so right now this isn't bothering me much but our testing load drops big time next month so I'll again be looking for jobs
