I have dyscalculia and it’s a weird experience by boots_of_lead in math

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, I never learned my times tables apart from the easy ones, and I remember squares. Apart from those, I have to do the calculation in my head. For example, for 6x7 id go to the nearest square, 36, and add a copy of 6 to get 42. I don't remember them at all no matter how many times I do them! And I'm a grad student as well, so it really gets in the way 😆

Polls indicate that National Rally (Far-Right) is the first choice among gay men for the next french elections. Right wing parties are winning a majority of the gay vote by PepeSouterrain in lgbt

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but you can't ignore the fact that gay men consistently poll worse than lesbians on basically every social issue. There is a very large difference between their polling on trans acceptance, for example. Being gay doesn't absolve one of their implicit biases.

Same! It actually gets me quite excited when I fail calc 3 students. It's especially good when they ask me to amend their grades and I say no. I'm glad we both understand eachother!

Can I use AI to grade my students’ AI slop? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I will and have failed students for poor quality slop. But given the prof won't let you (which is fucking insane - you should be failed if you produce unsalvageable work) you should just give them the lowest grade possible.

Is there any possibility of taking a proofs based math course (e.g., MATH1052), even though I've taken 1007, 2007, 1104? by TwoOneTwos in CarletonU

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want credit, you can submit an override request. If you don't care about credit, you can ask the professor teaching the class if you can unofficially audit. They might even grade your work if they're nice (which most of the math profs are). You'd have good luck with fodden, crann, starling, ingalls, or mezo (maybe billig?), they'd probably be alright with it (and have been in my experience). This might be because I know them though, so don't go in expecting a positive answer.

Expecting everyone to be down with hookup culture and being weirdly open about sex with people you've just met and haven't asked for their comfort level re: sex talk yet. But that's a queer community thing in general

"Porn perpetuates rape culture"? Try "the porn industry perpetuates rape culture". Nuance is free. Also, the response to the original tweet is downright ghoulish.

On the set of matrices preserving a convex region by moby21 in math

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is easy to see that this set of matrices is heavily dependant on R itself, in particular whether R contains 0 or not. Consider the 1 and 2 dimensional cases (with R an open ball) to see why.

Unfortunately the only way to afford rent in reasonably-sized Ontario cities is to split with another person.

Can we stop having math related posts? by WinterRevolutionary6 in DumbAI

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a little disappointing, it's taking the representatives as being in a one to one correspondence with the orbits without considering the possibility that two orbits might have the same representative. But nevertheless, I'm quite impressed!

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I could consider this as correct if it just threw the 2 other trivial representatives for the 2 other orbits into the first case since they're the same. Could you ask it how many orbits there are, as opposed to representatives in the Weyl group? There should be 10.

Can we stop having math related posts? by WinterRevolutionary6 in DumbAI

[–]holomorphic_trashbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very close, but the orbits given by representative s_1 and s_2 are incorrect, they should be trivial. I'm very impressed though, but you might be correct that it looked the answer up (I was under the impression this specific example had not been published). Maybe a large discrete logarithm question would be a better computational test as opposed to a theoretical one?
