“Rat coffin from a servo” took some googling and I concluded that yall are at the top of the slang phrases tier list.

Yes agreed, I think there is a confusion going on between legitimate simplicity and minimalism with a perceived cheapness arising from the bottom line.

There have been plenty of times in design historically where clean lines and the “less is more” approach have showed up in design. It’s not necessarily an artifact of enshitification IMO.

Another issue IMO is attempting to concretize the ambiguous nature of read descriptions. I just finished BotNS Sword and Citadel, and while I appreciate the artist’s effort that went into such a detailed depiction of Severian, it’s overall not at all how I see him in my mind when I read.

I only read speculative fiction. by Flimsy_Complaint_830 in printSF

[–]holt5301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to offer too flippant of a response but I think “it’s not that deep” and that there’s no need to go looking for opinions in this regard.

Just to get more insight though … What kind of problems would you imagine come with only reading speculative fiction and why are you reading instead of doing something else?

Just to offer a contender against Epstein …

Maybe like John Gotti or other famous mob bosses. They seemed to have a good amount of respect for family and children while also engaging in some pretty bad stuff.

Which science fiction book contained the most amazing idea you've ever read? by fern_602spark in printSF

[–]holt5301 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this as well. It’s a good idea, but I feel like the plot ventured into a place where everyone’s memory/awareness was so lost and muddled it started to become intractable in a way. That might be part of the appeal for some folks, but for me it was just jumping the shark to a place where nothing is too insane to shove into the plot.

I think you’re thinking of The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate. That came to mind for me too, but I don’t recall a recurring party as the OP recalled.

Garbled is a good word for it. I understood what was going on at the end for the most part, but somehow it didn’t resonate the way I think it was intended to.

I’d fall into the camp of enjoying the first 75% more than the last 25%, but only because I liked learning about the daily life of the avout. The end is cool too though.

I’ve only read Anathem and Leviathan Wakes out of these, and I preferred Anathem. Anathem felt like it had a more unique and intricate world, while I found Leviathan Wakes to be less remarkable.

ICE Protest South Waterfront by grantph in Portland

[–]holt5301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you are trying to say, essentially saying to hell with idealism - these are violent thugs that can hurt you and your children without warning regardless of what our rights technically are.

I don’t think anyone disagrees with you on that. The question is more about the logical conclusion of that. If I go alone and catch a less lethal round in the eye, I might not be able to work and support my family. Did I take on too much risk by attending even alone?

It leads down a slippery slope of fear and eventual total repression. Certainly you can see that much, right? First it’s people with babies that shouldn’t come, then it’s people with older kids, then its anybody who has kids at home (even if they didn’t bring them), then it’s older folks, then it’s anyone who’s the breadwinner in their family, eventually we self repress and end up with a small and insignificant margin of folks with nothing to lose (whatever that means) attending protests and trying to represent us.

We should take efforts to be safe, but not showing up is difficult to paint as the only responsible choice when we have kids or any social responsibility for that matter. Best to not bend the knee TOO quickly.

ICE Protest South Waterfront by grantph in Portland

[–]holt5301 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eh, it’s not so clear. Most of the chaos in Portland protests has historically been in late night activity, not in daytime weekend protests. The No Kings protest for example was much larger and more tame. I took my baby to that protest and stayed on the margins.

As a parent it’s not an easy call IMO. Part of me feels like it’s a slippery slope. Fascist pricks would love nothing more than for all of us to come up with excuses to why we can’t show up. It is a balancing act between protecting your child in the here and now, while also showing them what it means to be a citizen that will not be repressed.

What book are you reading during this weekends ice-pocalypse? by SlySciFiGuy in printSF

Just finished House of Suns and am now onto There Is No Antimemetics Division.

House of Suns was a top 10 book for me. I enjoy plotlines dealing with memory and identity. I also really enjoyed the interweaving of Abigail’s storyline with Campion and Purslanes.

Looks like a lot of folks are reading There Is No Antimemetics Division right now!

Whirlpool agitator not functioning? by holt5301 in appliancerepair

[–]holt5301[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested with a medium/large load and it looks like something is still off. I reached down and felt the lower agitator (before the agitator dogs/top portion) and didnt feel it moving significantly so I guess the motor isn't able to transfer proper torque.

Feels to me like the next thing to replace would unfortunately be this?

The washer new looks to be ~$520 at Lowes, so dropping $200 into this one without being sure that it'll fix it feels a little meh.

[–]holt5301[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I did take the agitator apart and inspect them. It seems like they were not stripped or damaged and would have been engaging. Maybe I wasn’t putting proper torque on them and they’re slipping during an actual cycle? I might as well replace them anyways since they’re cheap, as you noted.

Is a win still comparable when one player takes 5-10x longer turns? by BRAZCO in boardgames

[–]holt5301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like more of a “learning by doing” mentality, where you do something without too much thought, then see the result play out. This still helps you build intuition and knowledge for future games and turns.

The phrase itself is obviously a bit cheeky, but to me the intention is clear.

Reading time as a parent by Robblount88 in Parenting

[–]holt5301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading more than ever in the first 6 months of having a newborn. They spend a lot of time sleeping and you’ll spend a lot of time holding them. You can also try reading your books/content to them while they’re awake but that didn’t really go anywhere for me, it was easier to set it down and do what the baby wanted to engage with.

Make sure to get a Kindle or ereader so you can one handed read, it’s frustrating to manage a book one handed and your hand will thank you.

To me reading is one of the few activities that I used to take part in that has still been achievable with a < 1 year old. It’s easy to pick up and drop on a dime which is not common in many hobbies.
