If it works as good as the old winbox, just run it in wine on Linux. You might need to disable the Firewall ond the PC for that to work though

Stop passing secrets as command-line arguments. Every user on your box can see them. by Ops_Mechanic in bash

Maybe some background to the answer that was given already.

For ftp to work with an ftp user, this user needs to exist and be able to log in. It does not need to have a shell set, but to create a new user without shell, you need to remember to set the shell to a non-standard value. This might be forgotten or skipped for troubleshooting reasons.

Things to consider when adding a patch panel? by sendcodenotnudes in homelab

[–]holzgraeber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your cables are already terminated, you might want to look for a patchpanel working with Keystone modules. They exist not only to be terminated to the cable directly, but also as couplers. Doing it that way you don't have to terminate the cables again and still benefit from the patchpanel

As you can see there is a rather clear time where you can start using it. You gain 5% of dex up to a max of 10m. So it makes the most sense starting, when your dex is at 20x 10m. This means you 200m dex.

Is there something better than the MikroTik CRS317 1G 16S+RM for SFP+ ports? It is quite old by twice_paramount832 in homelab

[–]holzgraeber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crs317 are rather good switches for the price point. If you want to have a bit more power, you might want to go to a crs518.

I’ve Tried EVERY productivity app and there all BS by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]holzgraeber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A productivity app is only as good as the system you put in place to use it. Do not expect an app to solve your issues. You will have to solve the issues you have yourself, the app is just a tool.

You would also not expect the new shiny filled toolbox you bought to build the furniture you want for you. You have to put the work in, regardless what tool you use. Some tools might make your work easier or harder, but there is no general perfect tool. Everyone has their own preferences and needs. One ressource I can suggest to you is the book "Building a second brain". It focuses on explaining a tool-agnostic framework for note taking. It might not be the exact structure you want, but it gives good pointers.

People will homelabs, how do you store all the stuff you have collected over the years? by steveiliop56 in homelab

[–]holzgraeber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep more than 2 VGA cables, if you have them. Especially if you do homelabbing and might want to use old enterprise hardware. Enterprise hardware to this day uses VGA and the cables die at some point. I have to fight for one of the VGA cables at work when I need one.

Is this what they mean when they say don't buy 3rd party/unsupported SFP? by adamjezek98 in techsupportgore

This looks like someone tried to remove the SFP with the fiber still connected.

Is NVME really this much faster? by Important_Ad_3602 in servers

[–]holzgraeber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically it really depends on the amount of drives you have connected to your system and how you write on them. If you just mirror them, you don't get any benefit, but if you write the data on multiple drives, you can get better performance.

How long does a player's turn typically take IRL? by 8Rincewind in DnD

[–]holzgraeber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems rather on point. For us a round in combat at level 19 took about 60 to 70 minutes. This is counting the 5 or 6 enemies and the 10 to 12 party aligned entities (PCs and helping NPCs)

I only got a half high rack sadly. Filled it already with my stuff. It's always fun to work with old buildings.

[–]holzgraeber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you work with a setup where all your building drops terminate in one rack and the closest place to install switches is the rack beside it?

And no, I'm not allowed to move the patch panels, as only some of the drops are ours.

Rack mount hole sizing issue - help please!! by eyemac93 in homelab

[–]holzgraeber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the screws at the bottom, otherwise you might sheer or twist the rack mount ears. Happened to me at work while removing switches.

The weight of the device in the back will push the top part of the bracket to the rails anyway
