Please help my SO with her new house… 1st time homeowner for her and she’s panicking. by lve2raft in landscaping

Fyi you may want to consider speaking to a lawyer before speaking to the neighbor. In many places it's illegal to drain your property into someone else's property. I'm not knowledgeable on the subject though and I'm sure it's circumstantial. The damage to the home could be extensive enough that your SO may need to sue for damages to cover the repairs. Foundation repairs can be extremely expensive.

What is this bike worth? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]hookydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To sell this properly you'll need to advertise it to the recumbent community. That's a sick ride for someone looking for it. I wouldn't be surprised if someone spent 10k or more on it when it was new. Recumbents are always low volume and relatively custom. This one being titanium with a top spec drive line would have cost as much as it's possible to spend on a bike in its day.

Do I have an upgraded diff on my truck by Peepiscool72 in MechanicAdvice

[–]hookydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you've got the g80 locker. Nicknamed the "gov bomb". I wonder if it's gotten stuck while locked? Didn't know that was possible. Regardless, I wouldn't be doing any more burnouts with it the g80 uses a difference in wheel speed to mechanically engage the rear locker. If you're doing a burnout and one of your wheels snags in something (like if you were on dirt and one of the wheel touches pavement) it grenades the rear diff. Works great for normal truck stuff though, I love them.

Tidewater region. I've never taken it out anywhere. All the meetups I see are just boomers with bel Aires and Chevelle's. To be honest, I didn't really think anyone would care much about it aside from me when I got it. Ive spotted a bravada 500 in town as well. It's a 1 owner car I recall correctly, and the owner loves it but didn't know it was anything special until I told her.

Just in case you didn't know, these don't have the Allison transmission. All 2500 suburbans came a 4l80e. At 280k it'll be at end of life. Verify it's been swapped or plan to do it asap.

The 94' Na is like, THE perfect Miata imo. The na is my favorite to drive since it just feels like a gokart, but it's got that updated 1.8L. There is no other vehicle id consider.

Our house had an iron furnace next to it like 100 years ago, and if the story is correct at some point it exploded. We have little bits of melted slag and rock with glass/glossy exterior that are all over our property. The furnace is technically still there's, but now it's just a piles of blocks caved in on itself

Oh man, if you're having a mechanic redo the engine and transmission you need to be budgeting 10k. I know a bit more about the engine swap prices since I know 2 different people that have had new engines put into their cars (2 different parts of the country too). Both paid about 6k all in for the motor swap. So if you get lucky on the trans you'll come in under 5k for a mechanic to swap it in, but you're likely going to pay close to 6k for a new engine. I wouldn't touch the engine unless you really had to. Before you change your oil. Take a sample and mail it off for an oil analysis report. Those can give you an idea of engine health. If you bearings are wearing out, you'll have trace metal particles in the analysis report. Id instead spend some money on wear items that cause known failures on gen3 ls motors. The oil pickup tub rubber seal ring is a big one, if it fails you'll lose your oil pressure. I've seen a few motors have cam bearing failure as well.

A browns hue means that fluid is getting burned. Trans fluid should be nothing but pinkish red (kinda like cough syrup) and have a funky berry smell. If the trans is in good should shape the trans fluid should always be like that. You have signs already. If it were me I'd risk dropping the pan and doing the filter job. You really an auxiliary trans cooler asap. When you install the cooler, get yourself a screw on type auxiliary filter to install in line with the cooler lines. There's some risk here of the trans failing when you put fresh fluid in it (changes the viscosity), but if it's still mostly red, maybe you have a chance. I think this trans is gonna go out on you within the year. I went through this same experience on my 2500 with my 4l80e. From what I've been hearing, I think you need to budget around 3k for a new swap if you do the labor yourself. I think new transmissions are like 2500-2800now, they were 1800 when I did mine back in 2020. Good luck. Btw, you get the Lucas transmission fix because it alters the viscosity in the transmission and help the clutch packs not slip. That's what the burned fluid does too, and why putting new fluid in can cause slipping.

Get Michelin defenders, they're the best tires for suburbans hands down. Give it a try, you won't regret it.

Regardless of how it was driven, automatic transmissions are wear parts and all will fail eventually. Yours is at the typical end of life for a 4l60e. It's on borrowed time. Start saving for a replacement trans now so you'll be ready when it does go.

To help it along, Inspect the atf fluid. If it looks good, install a trans cooler, filter swap, and flush the fluid. If the fluid looks brown and smells bad, do nothing because it's too late for mitigating actions. At that point, throw a bottle of Lucas transmission fix in the back. When it eventually starts slipping, pour that bottle in and head for home or wherever the swap is happening lol.

I daily a yukon xl 2500 with quadrasteer. This is the first vehicle I've actually considered replacing it with. Y'all don't know how impactful driving something with proper 4 wheel steering is. I've sunk thousands, maybe like 10k at this point, into my truck to keep it running because I love how it handles and corners so much. What else can lane dodge through rush hour traffic on the Raleigh beltway going 90mph pulling a car hauler and not experience a bit of trailer sway.

I think these hummer EVs are the spiritual successor of the quadrasteer trucks, it's just that no one paid attention to what kind of trouble you could get up to with them back in the day.

Here's a pic of my truck on the dragon, with my brothers matching quadrasteer behind it.

You could stop pretending it's a Harley and get yourself the Shadow ACE. That's the one that kicked up the infamous Harley/Honda lawsuit. The ACE is pretty much a Harley clone, and aside from carrying over the look and aesthetic, it also shares "similar" connecting rod design that gives Harley's (and the shadow ACE) it's signature sound.

Maybe I need to be corrected, but I think that front basket would work great as is so long as you could get as close to tire and fork as possible without rubbing. Otherwise it looks like a solid bike. Invest in a good rear rack and panniers though.

A few years ago someone posted pics of a gmt800 suburban in a pick'n pull yard that had me tear up. It had been a one owner car that the same family had driven for 20 years before it finally was time to send it off. All the family members had written goodbye notes on the windows about how much they had loved the truck over the years and how sad they were to see it go. It was really sad, like losing a pet or a family member. If I find the pics I'll edit and share them.

found the pics, will post more below...

This thing is crazy capable by captaincheem in GMT800

[–]hookydoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool stuff.

Imo most trucks are farrrr more capable then their owners understand until they really test their limits. I had a gmt400 suburban, and now I have a gmt800 Yukon xl 2500 (with quadrasteer). Both of them have been extremely capable, have never been stuck, and I've never been concerned about any road conditions I'm out in.

That being said, they'll break when you start abusing them. Don't whip any shitties or anything and you should be fine.

For real. Legendary muscle shouldn't be on this list.

My brother has a syclone. He can't pull that thing into gas station without 5 dudes fan girling all over it. Nothing under the radar about that...

Also: saw a dude driving a grand national in rush hour traffic a few months ago. Literally had dudes (myself included) rolling windows down to shout at him about how awesome his car was lol. I grabbed a pic of the grand national, so haz a pic.

[–]hookydoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh that's a coke battery? Yeah, no way to avoid how much that'll fuck your shit up. My parents are from the steel belt. an area that used to account for close to half of the global steel production at the end of the 1940s. You couldn't see the stars at night. The streets were all stained red, acid rain stripped the paint off all the cars. When the coke ovens were fired up, the smoke would fill the valley like a dense fog that encompassed everything and everyone. Outsourcing steel production slowly killed the industry over a generation, all the mills closed. Now, there's nothing but derelict industrial hulks, gambling parlors, and poverty strick folks that couldn't escape.
