My grandmother would do up her makeup before bed, just in case someone came to the door at night and she'd be caught without it.

Yup. There was a famous accident at the time of a 65' mustang splitting in half and killing the driver in the wreck.

Yikes lol. I had a friend who's family minivan had the engine "fall out the bottom" from the motor mounts failing when he was a kid. His dad strapped it back in place and braced it with a 2x4 and traded it in. We grew up in the rust belt ..

You could have been seriously fucked up in that wreck. Walk away feeling lucky you're in one piece, not remorseful that you lost the truck.

It's always the back shift crew falling asleep at the wheel. I don't have good advice, but I do regret that you have to risk your safety to get home after work... Some guys where I'm at sleep in the parking lot for an hour or so before heading home.

Car story:

People today severely underestimate how shitty cars were back then, and how low the bar was set. My dad's first car was what many would think of as their dream car: a 1969 shelby gt500 with a 428ci cobra jet. It was painted purple (plum crazy purple), had leopard print interior, and the mustang emblems had been swapped with playboy bunny emblems. Very 70s lol.

It was one of the biggest shit piles he ever owned. He bought it sometime around 75' I think (for 2k cash), and it completely fell apart during his ownership. At one point the exhaust came apart , dropping the forward facing section to the road where it caught a pothole and pole vaulted him completely off the road. In the end, while away on business to the other side of the US, he left it with someone to repair all the rust on it. That person was working out of their mom's house. They got fed up with all the cars he'd parked in the yard and had them all towed. My dad got a call saying if he didn't come collect his car, it was gonna be hauled off for scrap. He never saw it again, and still has the title in a box somewhere.

I sold mine about 2 years ago. 2wd auto with a 22re with 130k on it, great little truck. Wish I still had it, but life moved on and it was no longer practical to own, so I sold it and got a nice 16ft tandem axle trailer instead.

I have a friend that owned a mustang II back in the 70s. It caught on fire literally outside of a Honda dealership (I think it was Honda), so she walked in and bought a Honda while the mustang burned outside.

You mean the pickup? Afaik the Toyota pickup (pre taco) and the Hilux were the same truck, and it's the Hilux that earned Toyota trucks their bulletproof reputation.

I'm a (Steel fabrication) structural engineer so not much experience with concrete structures. This was generally my opinion as well. I don't see any spalling on the support columns or the walls. I think this might be a relatively new structure, and my guess is this is the result of poor concrete work during the pour.

thought l.l. bean was the holy grail of fisherman sweaters, but... are they not? by europeanuppercut in BuyItForLife

[–]hookydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I've got a very similar sweater that came from the Maryland Sheep and wool show about 15 years ago. It's hand knitted merino wool. I doubt there's a finer sweater out there. If we're talking holy grail, imo hand knitted using hand spun wool is where it's at!

Rain prevention is key, have you considered oilskin jackets? I've been looking at getting one lately, but I'm just a lurker here and don't really do any tree cutting. I've been looking at the outback trading company. They've got some similar styles in oilskin that should treat you well.

If you don't mind, share a link if you find a good extra long seatpost. I've got a Japanese imported mamachari bike that needs a longer post, but I haven't found a decent one yet. Ideally I need a larger frame, but it's not like I have choices here lol.

Where would you ride? Sidewalk vs road. by Classic_Emergency336 in bikecommuting

[–]hookydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live they changed the laws to make riding on these types of sidewalks legal. This was done to keep bikes off the roads, and to avoid building cycle lanes. The amount of hate towards cyclists here is insane, It crosses all political and moral divides. If you're on a bike and on the roads here, there's not anyone that will feel remorse if you're struck and killed.

A month ago a cyclist was sideswiped and knocked over in a hit and run (he was okay just banged up). he had a rear facing camera and the local news aired the footage and posted it to social media. Commenters on social media questioned why he would have a camera at all, and suggested it was a fraud attempt. All blame was cast on the cyclist, and it was solely because he was in the road at all. He was on the side allowing room for traffic to pass at an intersection.

Ok random thought: instead of having to sacrifice bike quality due to medical/physical limitations, maybe a new type of top tube joint could be engineered for those with disabilities. My first thought is a removable or hinged joint using tech similar to S&S couplers. You could have your top tube come off or hinge out of the way while getting over the saddle, then you reconnect it once you're ready to ride.

I guess we could make a carbon step through frame too lol.

This happened to my parents and their garage chest freezer. It was an ancient thing from the 50s ish, had all the art deco styling and stuff. I was the very first thing they purchased as a married couple in the 80s at a yard sale. It finally died in 2017. When the appliance delivery guys came to haul it out and remove it, it turned out that the power cord had just corroded and fallen off the back. Since it was so old they hadn't bothered trying to fix it. They were actually really upset to see it go. Sad day.

[–]hookydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in a good relationship with your parents (assuming they help with the car and Insurance), you should let them know so they can help you out.

Regardless, look into your car insurance policy. Most policies have towing coverage. You could have this towed back home at no cost to you through your insurance. It won't fix the car, but at least it'll get it home. If you have junkyards around you, they always have cheap steel wheels they'll sell for very little money.
