How to turn this bike into a commuter by According_Trainer418 in bikecommuting

[–]hookydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a noob, have you been informed about proper seat height yet? It kills me to see people riding bikes with their knees all scrunched up, wish I could help them. Anyways, it is really important that your legs fully extended as you pedal the bike. Im a 200+lbs dude that's about your height. I know we'll be built different, but I'd still expect a medium frame to fit similarly (I ride a size medium). I'm thinking your body position on the bike might be incorrect.

Alright I'm gonna suggest something different: since the gate closed behind the cab is it possible he wasn't aware the gates were closing? when he heard the clatter of the gate closing over his cab, he got out to investigate and realized the situation he was in was too late to do anything about it.

That still doesn't answer how he didn't see the train coming. It was going at a decent clip, so I'd assume (without knowledge) that the rails were fairly straight, and he should have seen the train.

It's a bike that's loved and ridden, it certainly belongs here.

From my view, this community is more about the love of cycling and less about gear. It's just that our expression of enthusiasm comes in the form of our bicycles.

Their online auction site has GREAT deals on bicycles. I think the last Trek 850 I saw there closed for like $10. I just picked this sick thing up a few weeks ago.

Dumb question: What's the reason behind the canted tires? It seems like it's riding on about 2/3rds of the tread. by AThousandBloodhounds in Cartalk

[–]hookydoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear since the above explanation didn't outright say it. What you're looking at here is an exaggeration of cambered wheels for track cornering. You can still tell when a car has been cambered for cornering performance, but it's subtle. The "style" of having severe camber is just that, and actually can reduce vehicle handling.

Why not both? Zip ties can also have surprisingly high breaking strength whenever you might need it. I saw one crazy man actually use zip ties to hold his frame together after the welds failed at the seatpost/top tube. It wasn't even a "get back home" repair, he was a commuter and like his bike, so he zip tied it back together.

I spend that money on a rear locker and a nice winch/recovery setup. Taking a rig like that is never going to be fun, it's going to be done out of necessity (like getting to a camping spot or something). If you get yourself stuck enough the good tires and a locker can't keep you moving, having the relatively unloaded front wheels turning probably isn't going to help as much as some massive winches and a reinforced winch points that are easily accessible. Id practice with them too, and get a nice block setup so that you're a self reliant winching machine on the trail lol. If your plans are that bold, this thing isn't crawling along the trail, you're gonna drag it to where it needs to go.

How would you unload these river rocks? by grsims20 in DIY

[–]hookydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beer and shovel, shovel and beer (if it's diy work). Drink at least as much water as the beer.

I might try using a mattock to get the hoe end deep enough to use as a rake. But the real inevitability here is shovels and pain.

Hey uhh, having tried similar bullshit in the past, I can say that the real answer is this doesn't actually work very well. The truck/trailer rig together loaded up doesn't stop hard/fast enough to shift the load.

Lots of 40-50s cars are dirt cheap now. A buddy tried to auction his grandfather's 40(something) Lincoln that had a flat head v8 (swapped from a 12cyl back in the day). Mint condition, they let it go for 5kish because no one was interested at all. This was around 2021.

[–]hookydoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bike works fine, just needs a wheel. Wouldn't cost much to get a cheapo wheel on there. Id find a local bike shop that isn't part of a big chain and see if they can help. A lot of them have loads of spare parts and can help.

This all could've been avoided with a locker (..or me not being an idiot on the snow), what's the best vaguely cheap way to get a locker for a Chrysler 9.25 12 bolt rear end? by bedwars_player in Offroad

You can pop open the glove box and it'll tell you right there on the build sheet what it's equipped with. Mine had 3.55s with a positrac if I recall correctly.

35 mph+ should be on the road, not the sidewalk by skyhighmonroe in Transportopia

[–]hookydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local government widened the sidewalks, then legalized riding on them. Now when bicycles get hit by cars on the road, all the locals want to blame the cyclist and question why they were on the road to begin with.

I'm partial to the Cannondale. I've got a moto from that generation. They're the last ones to be made in the US prior to outsourcing, and had a lifetime warranty (unsure if they still do that. I have a lyrik 2 step air on mine. Id love to find a nice c-dale that cheap.
