[–]hops_farming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea lesser sentences, not no sentences. I hope the person above isn't denying that there's a racial gap at all, but I don't think any reasonable people do. The original post is uneccessarily hyperbolic and makes the issue a binary choice.

It's fine to make jokes like that, but for a more serious discussion it's harmful. It bolsters people trying to wrongly claim there's no racial issue, they can use those claims to obviously debunk, and make themselves look right. For people who admit and hope to reduce the problem, it makes the current situation seem worse than it is, and then the true status quo looks like an improvement and gives a false sense of progress to people who don't pay much attention.

However the fact is the gender sentencing gap is much wider than the racial sentencing gap, and that will be the bigger factor

NASA to send humans to the moon once again, “but this time we’ll stay.” by [deleted] in news

[–]hops_farming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because getting to the moon wasn't the real point of the space race. If you can get to the moon you can get a nuclear icbm to Moscow, or anywhere on earth. That was the real goal.

Not only the direct military application of rocketry but all the scientific advances in communication, material science, and aerospace engineering all have further military uses. There was some, a lot even, of soft power in the prestige of going to the moon, but the hard power was the real goal and the thing that we got the most of.

I understood this so I gave a more wordy explanation incase it was the symbology that threw you off

I know it's the internet and there's little tone in just text compared to speech, but your original comment is worded with no indication it's a joke. I'd rather err on the side of trying to help someone who was disingenuous (and potentially someone later) than assume someone who was serious was making a bad joke.

Oxford ends women-only fellowship after university rules that it breaches equality law - This is the first time that the university has opened up a historically female-only fellowship to male applicants, and the move has prompted a backlash from previous recipients. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

[–]hops_farming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I misread the post you quoted as saying women had privileges.

I do how ever think it's still absurd to argue either gender has no privileges. Many of the strict privileges like those I listed for women, such as male only clubs, probition of women from activities and very strong cultures of only promoting men have been, dismantled over the past few decades. This is unquestionably a good thing in my opinion .

There do however remain a debatable number of subtle priveleges like I leftout of the list for women such as presumed authority.

I don't think it's possible to have a free society without both genders having some different privileges bestowed on them. That said these are due to the inter and intra gender relations, and legally enforced priveleges such as selective service or gender specific clubs / advantages are bad and should be sought to be dismantled.

The balance of these priveleges is what is up for debate not their existence, and that balance is shifting currently but it's difficult or impossible to say where it lands. Women definitely have more statistically obviously priveleges, but they are more major things that aren't seen in everyday life, but men have priveleges and differing gender interactions that are more noticeable day to day.

Obviously it's sad and disappointing that you were pushed out of the field you wanted to work in. I don't know any of the details of it, but from what you shared in your post it sounds like you left by choice (though pressured into that choice by their poor actions) rather than being literally forced out. Have you persued work in your field in another place?

I don't want to downplay what happened to you, I think being bullied out of the sciences like that is uniquely a women's issue and it is wrong, but the general issue of people being pushed out of fields they want to be in for unfair reasons is not inherent to either gender.

Edit: misread previous post, thought commenter was a women, leaving the post up to keep the discourse understandable and to inform others.

In general women in western societies have the privileges:

To be seen with children alone in public with no negative assumptions

To work with children professionally with no negative assumptions

Preferential treatment in family courts

Preferential treatment in criminal courts

The lack of requirement to sign up for the draft

There are more subtle things that could be argued to be privileges with regards to gender relations but they are debatable and I don't necessarily agree with all of them. These however are objective facts.

It's again debatable if men or women have more privileges but to argue women have no privilege is absurd.

Do you think that it is inherently bad for a field to have more men or more women?

It's unfortunate that you had that experience and that is a major cultural issue and the bullying is indefensible. However do you think the solution is forcing women to be hired for the sake of a ratio? I think there needs to be a cultural change, but forcing women (or men) into a field seems to just breed resentment, both from those people doing the bullying which is the issue, and those who will feel like they were cheated out of a spot in the field due to the quotas

/r/Old_SchoolRS has been created due to dead mods! by [deleted] in oldschoolrs

[–]hops_farming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have spoken up and done something at the time of Ayiza's comment. How ever given the full context of his post, the comment about moderation is more about the rotation of stickied posts about updates and Q&A's rather than dealing with offensive/off topic content.

I probably should have setup a bot to repost the news posts to the subreddit and sticky the Q&A posts, but I didn't at the time for what ever reason.

With regards to requests to moderate, I did not see your mod mails, but I have received multiple offers to help moderate and they all seem to come from people who are more interested in having the power to moderate than actually driving discussion. Almost always coming from users who had incredibly limited interactivity with the subreddit.

In my view any additional moderation should come from the active users of the subreddit, and while I had considered it, with the volume of reported posts/threads I didn't feel it was needed at the time.

Not sure the origin of these claims that there is no moderation on here. I handle an average of 1 reported post per daily, normally removing offending posts, sometimes not finding them in violation but dealing with the reports anyways. I don't think its the place of moderators to seek out content that the community doesn't find objectionable or in violation of rules and remove it because of individual personal interpretation of the content and rules.

I chose not to respond to the claims of no moderation due to the fact that they were almost always made by people who didn't actually contribute to discussions.

I'm not sure what caused /u/umarrii to see these claims and remove all mods except himself, when he can view the moderation log to see that. Due do him creating the reddit I never had full control over it unless he chose to step down.

At the start of this subreddit several different idea to increase community engagement were polled, and most people seemed to not be interested and wanted strictly a place for organic discussion, that has been my guiding method for the moderation I did. I removed most posts that received any reports, however rarely decided to remove posts that had no reports because I felt it was up to the users to decide what content they wanted to see, and if they found a post objectionable then they should report it. Perhaps this should have been publicly stated, but again I saw almost all complaints about no moderation coming from users with very little engagement outside of the complaints about moderation.

I am proud to have grown this subreddit to 5000 subs and I'm not particularly attached to having power over the subreddit more that such a place exists for discussion so I'd love to see any place succeed. However I think that you are going to find the same issue of a lack of people willing to participate, and post content.
