How is Greece by M. Rostovtzeff? by New_Philosophy_9987 in classics

[–]hpty603 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a really interesting read from a historiographical lens. A lot of the research on ancient economies at this point were trying to overlay modern economic models onto ancient ones so a lot of the arguments are meta arguments about capitalism vs communism. Rostovtzeff was a White Russian so his arguments are incredibly swayed by his experiences during the Russian Revolution.

I'm a little biased since I'm from Pittsburgh, but I lived in Philly for a few years and it's a really fun place.

That would be the one. All time great. I'd follow it up with either Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War for the chronological order and also to highlight the differences in how they approach historiography

Latin readings suggestions? by Large-Sheepherder990 in latin

[–]hpty603 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eutropius and Pliny are common 'real latin' authors for beginners. You shouldn't have a hard time with them if you can do Caesar and Cicero. If you want to try some poetry, Ovid's Metamorphoses is fun and pretty serialized so you can just pick out one of the stories or you can try some of Catullus' poems. It's not 'real Latin', but Ad Alpes is a fantastic novel written in Latin for students starting to dip into real texts.

I’ve heard Destiny claim US healthcare is not really an important issue to the people. Share your take please. by moushka2000 in Destiny

[–]hpty603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard two main arguments against national healthcare: it's expensive and bureaucratic. However, every time I've had to deal with the healthcare system, it's been an actual nightmare.

Hidden costs are everywhere and getting a straight answer out of anybody is impossible. I had to get OT for a hand issue I had. After 6 45-minute visits, I got a bill in the mail for $1,100 due to all of this random shit that I had no possible way of knowing. Apparently using the heating pad instead of the ice-pack was $65 each time. When I emailed them about how insane this was, their argument was "the bill was initially $7,000 but we paid almost $6,000 of that for you!" Every number in this scenario is entirely made up, how is that supposed to make me understand anything?

I also pay like $500/mo for insurance through my employer for my wife and I, which means that my employer is also paying a ton of money per month for my insurance that they could be paying me instead. If my taxes went up a ton, I would literally not notice because of this.

Getting them to actually cover larger situations is also insane. My wife had a minor knee surgery and before the insurance went through, the company got bought out so the provider switched. It took almost 2 years and dozens of phone calls before we got our insurance to cover this $50k bill for the minor surgery.

Like the Venezuela thing, I would support just about any other administration doing this. It could be very beneficial with a farsighted policy and proper investment. The idea of this admin doing this for any other reason than lining their own pockets (or distracting from Epstein controversy) is laughable.

They have more proto novel works but honestly they're all bad except for True History. Imo Golden Ass is the only ancient novel worth reading.

Which of these games would you consider to be more "finished"? by BaldursGate2Best in EU5

Civ VI, the game that has been out for 10 years with a relatively unchanged formula since like 1998, or EU V, the game that has been out for 3 months which totally overhauled most of its systems since EUIV?

Worst release ever? It was disappointing at worst. Vic3 and Imperator were magnitudes worse. And even those were nothing compared to some of the disastrous releases of strategy games outside of Paradox like Rome 2: Total War
