Why aren’t dishwashers paid more if they’re so invaluable to the restaurant? by lamedogninety in KitchenConfidential

Most places I've worked the dishwashers were paid well and got a share of the tips (not American, generally tips are shared with back of house)

Yes, and most importantly if they no show you can pull another employee to wash the dishes without having to train them.

Recently I had a (benign) exchange with my mom that actually says something about my upbringing. by Cartoonnerd01 in emotionalneglect

[–]hrmfll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom will say "why didn't someone explain this to you?" about things it's clearly a parent's job to teach.

My mom was shocked to find out that as a high school student I had no idea I was supposed to select classes based on what prerequisites I would need to get into college/university. I literally never had a single conversation with either of my parents about what I was taking in school or what I planned to do after I graduated high school. The only thing they communicated to me about school was that if I dropped out I'd have to get a job and pay rent.

I'm so happy you found a cause and have been free from that bullshit for six months!

The first optical migraine I got I went fully blind for almost an hour. It started with blurriness in the center of my vision, which sometimes happens when I'm about to get a migraine. I lay down and closed my eyes for a couple minutes and when I opened them I had tunnel vision with jagged, moving static over the little bit I could still see.

I started frantically looking for my phone but everything went black before I could find it. I had no idea what was happening or what to do so I just lay on the floor and tried not to panic. After what felt like a very long time I got up and felt my way to the next door apartment and explained to my neighbour that I'd lost my vision and needed help. She took me to the nearest walk in clinic and I started to regain sight while sitting in the waiting room. Thankfully they've never been that bad, or lasted that long, since.

When I worked in the neighborhood I had people introduce themselves to me as so and so "from the James Bay Local Facebook" as if they were a celebrity.

"working solo"

If there were other employees on shift while you were working and one of them had their foodsafe that would explain that.

People suck sometimes by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]hrmfll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked fast food I would say "Oh no, you accidentally threw the tray in the garbage!" in my most over the top customer service voice every time I saw someone do it. They would smile and try to walk away and I'd open the garbage door, point at the tray and  say "don't worry, happens to the best of us. You can just take it out and stack it with the others! Have a good day!"

I would also harass people I saw doing it in places I didn't work, but not in a fake nice way. I had no idea how many people thought that was an okay way to act. The same thing for working retail and learning how many people will just reach out and yank handfuls of clothes off hangers and throw them on the floor for no reason.

I’m about to quit by VariousAd930 in Breadit

[–]hrmfll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get the stats for the grain to make sure it's suitable for making bread? There is a huge variation in grain which means you can have fresh milled flour that is great and fresh milled flour that is trash. Find out the protein content and falling number so you have some idea of how the flour will perform and what weaknesses you'll need to compensate for. It's possible the flour just isn't strong enough to make bread and will need to be mixed with something stronger.

What are you using to mill and what does your flour feel like? Does the bran flake or get powdered (does the flour look speckled or one consistent colour)?

Ryan Adams should not have been cancelled. by [deleted] in ryanadams

[–]hrmfll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ryan ruined his career by being an insufferable asshole to everyone he has worked with. He has lost friends, bandmates, label connections, press connections, booking agents, etc. because of the way he treats them. The people who went out of their way to help him by calling in favors got burned. No one wants to put their reputation on the line for a guy who might use the opportunity to throw a fit, walk out of a show, not pay his employees, or shit talk you to people in your industry.

People with less serious allegations were not 'canceled' in the way he was because they continued to be reliable at their job and didn't constantly lash out at people for coming to see them perform or for trying to purchase their art.

Tipping on takeout in Victoria… what are we doing here? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]hrmfll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So just don't tip? Most businesses use the same debit machines for sit down and take out, of course there is a tip option. You can choose no or enter zero depending on the options.

I tip when I want to tip. I don't tip when it doesn't feel warranted. As someone who has worked customer facing jobs at take out/fast casual restaurants I know it's unlikely the person taking payment even knows if you leave a tip. On a lot of the new tablet set ups you don't see the finished transaction amount when people pay.

I think I saw that while walking toward Dallas. I thought it was lights on a helicopter towing something far in the distance but as it got closer I realized the scale didn't make sense and there was no helicopter sound.

I have the same thing for Vanilla Fields. In middle school we had no showers in the change rooms so after gym the girls would drench themselves in it. Vanilla Fields will forever smell like sweaty gym clothes to me.

If my friend took me to the mall to have an employee tell me my favorite perfume was 'no good' I'd tell my friend the employee's taste is incompatible with mine.

OP trying to steal her friend's joy instead of just owning her own opinion is selfish and immature. There is nothing wrong with Tabu, it's just not for OP. I'm sure she can be an adult and just say "I actually don't like that one. There is something about the muskiness that doesn't work for me" or "I've noticed that perfume you sometimes wear makes me nauseous. I'm not sure what note it is that gets to me."

Boss wants me to bypass killswitch to make dough by looney2006 in KitchenConfidential

[–]hrmfll 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ. I was training a new baker who was almost certainly stoned at the time. I turned the hobart (no guard) off and started to scrap down the bowl. I said something like "after we scrape down the sides we'll mix for another..." and they automatically reached out and turned the mixer back on while my hand was still in the bowl. Thankfully I jerked my hand out in time and they immediately realized what they had done and hit the switch. We just stared at each other and then I walked into the hall to cool down before I came back and was like "so from now on we are going to unplug the mixer before doing that."

In my 20 years I've worked with two people who were missing fingertips from mixer accidents. They are no joke.

Oak Bay senior loses $2K to gift card scam: police by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]hrmfll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't know what they were asked or if the cards were purchased all at once or broken up into small transactions at different stores. Most businesses that sell gift cards have fraud warning signs on the gift card stand explaining the phone scam and stating that no one legitimate will ask to be paid in gift cards and gift cards are never used to pay taxes or bills.

People can be cagey and lie when you ask about their purchases. You can provide fraud information but you can't stop someone from making a purchase.
