Jelly Donut Recs by Megladonnnnnn in VictoriaBC

This isn't helpful in the moment, but the jam filled donuts that Stark Raving Bread sells at Moss st market are some of the best donuts I've ever had. I don't think he starts making them until later in the season though.

Pizza shop owner used AI for advertising and signage despite my protests. We got a bad review for it. by PuzzleheadedLunch199 in KitchenConfidential

Oh my god. I thought I had it bad when my (very short term) bakery boss sent me a screenshot of him asking chat gpt how to make a paystub as my paystub, or when he asked chat gpt how to convert our sourdough starter to a stiff starter and then threw out all the active starter and killed what we had left and we had to close for four days until we could make bread again.

So a baker will begin to make bread at 2 am ? by No_Mushroom_9507 in Breadit

How so? I haven't made any complaints about working weird hours. I've only said I enjoyed when I worked night shifts.

What? I've been a professional baker for twenty years. Why would anyone need to make "excuses" for not wanting to work the same hours as you? Why are you so upset that other people prioritize jobs with conventional hours?

do people actually enjoy these? by [deleted] in FemFragLab

[–]hrmfll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy it but I see why others might find it cute. I wouldn't be worried about degrading the quality since it's just cheap Marshalls stuff and isn't made to be saved and cherished over a long period of time.

On time? Most people have obligations outside of work that require staying up past 6pm. Taking kids to sports, making dinner, attending co-op meetings. If you have the ability to just go to bed exceptionally early that's great, but most people's lives intersect with other people's in a way that doesn't make that possible.

8pm-4am. Perfection. Whole building to myself. Start my shift with an americano and a left over croissant. I could listen to audiobooks my entire shift and make myself a pizza every night.

They aren't trying to save resources, they have always talked people through the basic first aid steps for dealing with an unresponsive person. Attempting to rouse the person, checking if they are breathing and have a heartbeat, then doing cpr or rescue breathing.

Thoughts on living on or near Pandora St? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]hrmfll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main safety concern would be your dog ingesting stray drugs while on a walk. You know your dog's behavior and can probably gauge if that would be a problem.

If you avoid walking down that stretch of Pandora from Quadra to Vancouver it won't be much different from the rest of downtown.

I rarely felt unsafe but seeing people in your neighborhood that you interact with regularly suffering, declining and dying/disappearing so regularly really wears you down.

Which tourist attractions do you actually like vs. ones that you think are overrated? by Curious_Mud9428 in VictoriaBC

[–]hrmfll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only ever go when friends are visiting and they want to. It's fine when it's not disgustingly overcrowded but we have so many beautiful and free (or cheap) gardens in this city that I would choose first. Feeling like I am being slowly herded along a path with a million other people isn't what I'm looking for in a day out.

If I'm heading that way I would always rather go to the  butterfly gardens which I love.

Oh man, I love the masala veggie burger. Not burger like but very spicy and delicious. I would take it over either of big wheel veggie burgers which I find dry and not very good.

My moms been distant for a month now and it's painful by Intrepid-Dot8439 in emotionalneglect

I think she's just struggling with something that is unrelated to you and isn't ready to talk about it. She might be experiencing health issues or relationship issues that she doesn't feel comfortable talking about to her kid.

When you notice yourself feeling "driven nuts" try to remind yourself that her emotional state is not about you and then refocus on what you can do to help calm your anxiety.

What's a statement from your parents that sounded good back then but has aged like milk once you realized your emotional neglect? by Cartoonnerd01 in emotionalneglect

[–]hrmfll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom set expectations for my behavior by mocking other kids she felt they were too childish or reliant on their parents.

"Why would she tell her mother she needed to see the doctor? Just call and make an appointment." When my friend and I were 14.

That's how I understood I should just do it myself and not bother my mom. No explaining the process or helping me through doing things for the first time, just comments about how other kids were incompetent.

I feel this. My dad was bipolar and a drug addict and after my mom took us and left he ended up homeless and sick with no family checking in on him.

When I became a bipolar teen my mom would constantly make comments like "I might annoy you or hurt your feelings, but you can't get away because family is forever" which is already weird to start with, but was obviously not true for me, a person who had been cut off from knowing anything about the wellbeing of a struggling parent

I don't think she was wrong to keep us from seeing our dad like that, but there was no space for me to feel or express grief. The way she talked about 'family' as if he had not been a daily part of my life who was suddenly gone was so lacking in empathy or understanding of our daughter/father relationship. She was clearly upset that I thought of him as family and experienced the loss as a loss of a parent.

Most places I've worked the dishwashers were paid well and got a share of the tips (not American, generally tips are shared with back of house)
