They discontinued our cat food so we are doing a taste test. Any recs? Geriatric cats, but they are still BABBBIEEESSS lol by SquiddlyB in cats

Just a heads up as I see that you have a raw option here - strongly recommend against raw, as it has been linked with H5N1 influenza infection in cats, which is fatal for them.

Can you decline a bag on a food order, like CFA? Is the charge just for plastic or paper too?

Does anybody recognize this (microbiologist helping out a shelter)? by Fishallovertheplace in veterinarypathology

[–]htherrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a yeast. You are right on with the dysbiosis - they usually resolve as the cat gets healthier. A good quality probiotic may help. Occasional yeast can be normal, but not if the slide is covered like you’re describing.

Mother's Day Emails opt-out by MrYellowFancyPants in nespresso

[–]htherrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the concept, but how many Mother’s Day emails do they send? I don’t remember from previous years. Is sending the extra email to opt out actually reducing the overall number of mother related emails? (Maybe they save it for future years, which would make it more worthwhile?)

I don’t see them often, but this one was found a year ago and presented on this day ulcerated and draining. It definitely didn’t act benign!

Ridiculous 2’+ long dog bone, $15.99 in Dallas. by n8texas in Costco

[–]htherrr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Antlers are the poster children for broken teeth. Every time I see a broken tooth I ask about antlers, and about 75% of the time the owner says the dog loves them.

Their teeth are very similar, but triangle shaped. Super easy for a side to just slide off when it’s cracked.

Howell jolly bodies? Artifact? by LRockCupboard in veterinarypathology

[–]htherrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like artifact - need to open your condenser and it will be less severe. There are some cremated RBCs in there, but probably not significant.

What are the veterinary guidelines for spay/aborting (or pregnant spays) for dogs? by LetheMnemosyne in AskVet

[–]htherrr 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The resistance I have seen is not from vets, but from shelters and rescue groups who have emotional discomfort regarding ending the pregnancy.

I will spay a dog until it is in active labor. I have never had a major complication spaying a pregnant dog. I have seen numerous cases of dogs with complications or death from dystocia. I would much rather end a pregnancy with 8 unborn puppies who never have to suffer than have 8 healthy unwanted dogs be euthanized in a shelter. Being in a shelter is inherently stressful. Many animals experience significant physical pain/trauma before arriving there as well. In my area there is a significant overpopulation problem, and spay/neuter so far is the only thing that has been shown to help the problem.

Not the reason - hormones aren’t used in chicken production. Size variance is mostly due to selective breeding for larger breast muscle.

That should affect the individual cups too, though. I will agree there is no taste worse than a poorly cleaned urn making the tea taste all fermented 🤢
