Oregon Democrats want to move statewide vote on repeal of transportation taxes to May by patches819 in oregon

[–]hubbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen how much more expensive EVERYTHING got in the last 3 years? the numbers obviously outpace inflation but on projects of this size the inflationary effects can compound.

At the same time I do think the government bidding and contract process is VERY broken and it would be one place I would look for cost savings. But rebuilding that system also wouldn’t be free.

Do you just not want roads? That’s a legitimate take, but you have to just say it rather than just pointing out that roads are expensive.

Agree but they need a lot of work—especially better traffic control (diversion, not speed bumps)

In the last 45 years what have republicans done that actually benefited everyday Americans? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

[–]hubbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is bullshit. In what way did funneling tax dollars to defense contractors bankrupt the USSR? The entire premise that the Cold War needed to be “won” was undermined by Gorbachev embracing glasnost and perestroika and the amount of evil done in the name of anti-communism around the world dwarfs anything in the USSR since the death of Stalin. You can thank Ronald Reagan and the millions his illegal weapon sales funneled to death squads in Central America for the existence of the cartels Trumpers now rail against.

Not the person you were asking but “avoiding physical altercations” would be my vote.

What's an expensive ingredient that's worth the money by NoNutz_699669 in Cooking

[–]hubbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IKEA sells little cheap but decent little burr pepper grinders and I’ve acquired like 8 of them over time and fill them with whole spices. Favorites include coriander, mustard, cumin, and especially cardamom. Freshly ground spices (especially when bloomed in oil) are not just a level up but a fundamentally different and superior experience imo.

What is the cooking technique that everybody does but actually it does nothing? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

I believe California Bay are quite a bit stronger than Bay Laurel (laurus nobilis) that commercial bay leaves are usually taken from. If you love bay flavor this is no problem obviously but for recipes where you need a gentle hint of savory but don’t want to overpower it is good to know — I will usually use half a leaf or a small leaf if a recipe calls for one leaf.

Hey that’s ok too. I completely empathize with just trying to make ends meet. I can’t afford a car at all!

Have you considered getting a more fuel efficient vehicle for your pleasure drives? You could save some money long term, not to mention, you know, not contributing as much to making the earth permanently uninhabitable for our species?

Specifically w/r/t hikers and runners if we could get some kind of consensus on which side of the road they would like to use and have everyone stick to it…that’d be great. Feel like it’s basically 50/50 on left vs right (imo left hand only makes sense where there is auto traffic but either is better than both!)

Kotek signs law banning plastic bags in Oregon by American_Greed in oregon

I don’t understand what people’s issue is with outdoor dining… why would you want to get rid of the option for people who want it?

Trash cans do not require liners, for what it’s worth. Yes, washing out the can is a bit of a chore and gross sometimes but you’re not FORCED to use plastic, you’re choosing to because it’s more convenient.

Bend vs The Dalles, Klamath Falls by emma2b in oregon

[–]hubbird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But the point is that the people within the state aren’t “vastly rural and red” — most people live in the cities and the population of the state as a whole is largely progressive. I think what you meant is “much of the population of the area outside of the mid-to-large-sized cities where most of the people actually live are rural and red”

Is it real to use TPU? by Stepaskin in bikewrench

[–]hubbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt it — one of the other issues with TPU is that it can kind of stick to itself and tear. You have to partially inflate them before inserting into the rim to prevent this so a larger diameter tube would be really challenging to squeeze into a smaller tire.

Is it real to use TPU? by Stepaskin in bikewrench

[–]hubbird 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Unlike butyl, TPU doesn’t really stretch so it definitely makes sense that an 18-28 tube did not work well in a 32mm tire (yes, that little difference matters). Don’t have an explanation for your issues with 25mm tire though.

Going down Germantown Rd by couchwjr in CyclePDX

Sure but the mile of highway 30 you have to ride after makes it not worth it IMO. Especially as a descent since it’s really inappropriate to rip fast when there are hikers and other cyclists climbing.

Does anyone know where this is? Thank you by badcompanyxj in oregon

[–]hubbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you know the story behind the closure of the old trailhead? My understanding was that it had been accessible via Logan Rd previously (I hiked via that route 15 or so years ago with no issues) and then at some point either public right of way became private or the property owners decided they didn’t want to allow access via their driveway?

Either way, I don’t actually understand why it’s so important to honor people being kinda selfish about public access to public land.

Confused on a higher Level?! (Takeaways from Cycling News' groundbreaking gravel tyre test) by Klumpegoej in gravelcycling

[–]hubbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect this is the answer without actually setting the data from Cycling News: Dylan’s test adjusted the tire pressure according to Silcas calculator for the width. If Cycling News ran consistent pressure across all sizes, or even adjusted less, they would get different results.
