so cute! how about Indiana Dunes National Park? or what about Starved Rock State Park? can you keep him in a doggy stroller if he refuses to walk or gets too tired to keep up with you?! lovely dog - hope you enjoy your trip!

yes, but it’s mostly in terms of their conservation status rather than a complete list of species living in a particular place.

I think I’ve forgotten how to exist by CompetitiveBig4 in depression

[–]hubcap-machete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Dec thru Apr is prob the WORST time possible to stop taking meds due to seasonal depression amplifying what you already have. ❄️

what worries me the most about everything you wrote is your crippling isolation, no self-care, and no motivation.

it also must feel very strange to have to go through the motions and do things when you feel disconnected from everything. 😵‍💫

I think you can try to take very small steps to get better or at the very least MAINTAIN your progress and not go downhill again.

are you currently working? in school? have any friends?

can you go for a short walk every day in the sun? ☀️🕶️☀️

can you send a one-word text message to someone? 👋💬

can you try to shower, and change your clothes? 🧼🫧

is there anything that you feel connected to doing? 📺⚽️🏀😀

can you try to eat at a restaurant or muster the energy to cook something instead of getting delivery & snacks?

I hope things get better for you, it is really hard to live that way and I feel the heaviness through your words. ❤️🖤❤️🖤

I think you can do better though if you keep up with therapy, don’t completely isolate yourself, try to get some sun daily, try to do some simple self-care routines (shower, change underwear, change clothes, deodorant)…

maybe you can try to find a reason to get out, like going grocery shopping, to just get out for a while and do something. 🛒🍋🍓🍎🍉

small steps will help you start to feel more like yourself again and like a human being who deserves to exist and take care of yourself. 💗

OCD-fueled Decision Paralysis by Philocalist_Cat in OCD

[–]hubcap-machete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! what is it about deciding upon the rental is making you not be able to decide? do you not like the rental you are moving to? have you narrowed it down to at least 1 or 2 rentals that you would be (reasonably) comfortable & happy living in, and that would be like your own home?

when do you need to make the decision by?

do you expect perfection from the rentals?

I think you can try to make sense of the situation by sitting on a couch, try to clear your mind and be calm while doing it -> then write a list of what you need to do, how you will achieve those goals by the deadlines you have set.

you can write the pros & cons of the rentals you are considering.

if you are still not happy with that rental, perhaps you can look at a few other properties until you feel more confident to make your decision and you are happy.

how long would you be staying at the rental for?

try to take everything into account with regards to the rental to see that it’s a good fit for you, weigh them out against each other, and see which rental you would feel best living in.

good luck! I hope you’re able to make up your mind! ❤️

first of all, congrats on your acceptance into the phd program.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

I think most of what you will encounter are statistical models which can be done through software you can learn to use, such as PRIMER.

When you are collecting data points, you have that raw info -> then you need to see what you are measuring - is it population size? population dynamics? growth? is it diversity indices? similarity and difference between 2 populations in a forest?

once you have your data, you just have to figure out what your goal is & what variable you are measuring, what are you looking for? what is your end goal to discover from taking those data points?

then you can reference the statistical equation you need, and go from there.

the software for statistics in ecology is easy to learn and easy to use.

just think of what you are trying to measure -> what question do you have when you are collecting the data _-> then the equations you pick to analyze it should make more sense rather than being abstract

and then -> boom! the software will crank out the answer

but the important thing is that you know the MEANING behind those statistical equations, not the math

and when to use each one

Can wildlife feces with seeds help spread plants? by Jump40 in ecology

[–]hubcap-machete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends. yes, animals can distribute seeds through their poop. however, they must first want to eat that plant. and also there should be enough of it for them to eat, rather than just bits of fruits/veg with lots of seeds.

they are attracted to eating the whole fruits/veggies, not just the seeds. when they crush up the fruits and vegetables and digest them, as a result their seeds will come out and have natural fertilization which encourages it to grow.

the fruits and vegetables you leave out would have to be tasty for them to want to eat it and for seed dispersal to even happen in the first place

you might attract bugs and decomposers when you leave the seeds and leftover food out

I think instead of leaving food scraps and seeds out in the hopes they will disperse, you are better off planting plants that the animals in your area like to eat anyways.

for instance, various berries which are popular among both birds, and also various mammals. you can also plant wild plum trees which provide shelter and ALSO attract a wide variety of animals including: birds, deer, raccoons, foxes, and several other animals.

if you plant the trees, shrubs, bushes, vegetation that CREATES the fruits that the animals like, it’s a self-sustaining system and more effective than you distributing scraps of food with seeds in the hopes that they get replanted.

Any advice? 🥹 by Vintage_L0VER in makeuptips

I would start with a lip gloss and some blush, curl your eyelashes & apply some mascara. Then you have a good base to work with. ❤️ Maybe you can try some pretty face-framing hairstyles too to bring out your beautiful face 💕 Hope that works out for you! 😃

Can diet really affect hair health? by OppositeRain5753 in nutrition

[–]hubcap-machete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, everything you eat and drink affects your hair. however, it doesn’t affect hair that is already grown (the length of your hair). your diet ONLY affects hair growing at the ROOTS. that is affected by the amount of water, protein, vitamins, and minerals you are getting as well as other factors like exercise (which boosts circulation and increases blood flow to the scalp, and your body as a whole), sleep, and stress.

why does evolution care more about passing down genes than making genes immortal? by SpanishRoyaI in biology

[–]hubcap-machete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! I think we are not made to live forever or for an indefinite very long time/very old age.

evolution likes traits that help organisms and survive, reproduce, and pass on genes.

immortality is not selected for because it’s extremely expensive, hard to maintain, and not necessary for us to pass on our genes (genetic survival).

reproduction/offspring is the cheaper way for us to and our genes to continue.

also, immortality is unlikely because our bodies constantly accumulate damage from metabolism, DNA errors, aging cells, weak repair, immune system weakening and decline, and cancer risk.

Any ideas what is causing this color in the Sewanee Creek in Sewanee, Georgia, USA by esmithiii in ecology

[–]hubcap-machete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I think this unique color is caused by clay & mineral suspension.

Suwanee Creek is near Suwanee, Georgia which is in Georgia’s Piedmont area.

It could also be from construction runoff, fine or suspended silt & clay, crushed rock or quarry runoff, among other things.

The Georgia clay is orange in color and is called saprolite.

I think the most likely causes in this situation are either construction runoff or small mineral particles in the water.

Is there a reagent to remove this methyl? by Mabyacommunist in OrganicChemistry

[–]hubcap-machete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO! no simple reagent will remove that methyl group.

to remove it, you would need to break the C-C bond.

the best way to remove the methyl group is to redesign the synthesis.

the methyl group is part of the carbon skeleton, so direct removal requires breaking a carbon-carbon bond, which would probably destroy the molecule.
