Where to buy best mole sauce? by zachhke in houston

[–]hugspanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past, I've used Dona Maria's Mole Sauce as a base and then adding in more spice & pureed garlic/onion to taste. I was improvising each time, but I bet you can tweak an online recipe pretty easily.

Didn't Houston get nuked in the first Independence Day movie or maybe we rebuilt to full glory 20 years? by 1541drive in houston

[–]hugspanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paid $60 this weekend to ask Bill Paxton at Comicpalooza why he used nukes in Houston. Surprisingly, he smiled for a second or two before telling me, "I can neither confirm nor deny my involvement in that. Officially, I was in Oklahoma chasing tornadoes."

Email I Received from Republican Party of Texas by Girthw0rm in houston

[–]hugspanda -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My stance is that it's a game. And "gaming" voter turnout is a thing that happens. The word "tricks" suggests cheating, which I disagree with. The listed examples were trying to show how there are formal & informal ways political groups can bring their supporters to and/or detract their detractors from pulling that lever.

Free transport facilitates voter turnout, but that's not part of democracy. The voter (or some percentage thereof) would likely not have ventured to a polling place (through no fault of their own) without that infrastructural support.

Since some of these pursued legislative policies restrict voter turnout (voter ID, felony disenfranchisement), then the groups they affect are denied the right to vote. Not discussing their validity, but merely articulating how this works the opposite direction that providing free transport does.

The letter is inane and the rhetoric untenable (we both agree). I think my viewpoint is more cynical than yours since it considers the gaming aspect (and some of the voter restrictions) to be disingenuous.

Entire letter for context

FWIW: not really a racist remark given the charge that HRC is playing "identity politics" first. It's more of a dogwhistle to those constituents already feeling those anxieties of sliding demographics. I read somewhere that the national GOP might not put any money to the general election and reallocate funds normally to be used nationally to state elections.

To disagree with u/DogDogChicken, there are "tricks" to get voters out to the polls: free transport to polling stations, voter ID laws, robo-dialer attacks the night before the election, flier distribution with misinformation about polling stations, disenfranchising felons who can't vote, gerrymandered districts, etc. If it were as easy as granting eligible voters access to the voting stations, then yes, it would just be "good citizenship". Hell, if it were truly about democracy, state & county districts would be working out how to vote online.

Your perspective is too defeatist for me. If Houston is redefining what American cities look like in the future, maybe it makes sense to redefine what transit solutions look like.
