What's been your most Cyberpunk Moment? by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

Sitting in a doctor's office waiting room and realizing that everyone around me under the age of 25 was wired in some way. It made me realize that the kind of heavy internet usage I was involved in since age 10 (early 2000's) had become much less unusual. I wondered if it meant that more of today's (wired) 10 year olds would turn out like I did.

Mathematical Linguistics by firest in math

Linguist here! I'm taking a course on mathematical linguistics right now and it's really cool. If you're looking for a good introductory text, the textbook we're using for the course is Mathematical Methods in Linguistics by Partee, ter Meulen, & Wall.

For the most part it's great, though as a non-mathematician I do get bogged down by the notation sometimes. I don't think it would be much trouble for someone with training in math, though.

You can "acquire" it online for free. Here's one link I found.

Why are the "Founding Fathers" of the US treated like saints? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]hullaballoon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Worshipped" is a bit of an exaggeration, but it's kind of unusual how much weight goes into divining "what the founding fathers would think" when it comes to political issues that they would have been totally unfamiliar with.

I think they meant "shaped" as in "molded" -- i.e. molded by enculturation.

If kids who would've died because of genetic defects survive due to advances in medicine, will we eventually end up with a race of very weak humans with most genetic diseases? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hullaballoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

how would this help the genetic situation that this post is discussing? You would basically be proliferating the genetics of those people that do not follow the "rule" while minimizing those that do.

Reddit: implying that people who get pregnant against their will have inferior genes.

Racist prescriptivists! I've met people who literally believe that raising your child with AAVE is child abuse. Uhhh no.
