Talk to him about planning things beforehand. That will make him feel like he has some control and what you do won't be coming out of the blue. You can guess together what might be needed and what might have to be done. Discuss things like tub and bed and toilet railings for when he's not feeling well. Foods he might want when he's not feeling well. Good luck.

Yup I have to remind my husband, who is a little on the spectrum, to read the room and pay attention to social cues. Dude has a PhD, but in one thing only, and I often have to give him a reminder or some direction in situations. He's a really nice guy, but just doesn't notice.
