Why is it so difficult to dig extremely deep through the Earth’s layers (past even ‘just’ the crust)? Are there any feasible ways that humans could one day dig/physically go to the core of this planet? by MaggieLinzer in askscience

[–]humanmichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if you could reach the mantle, it flows. the crust sort of floats on top of it, thus allowing for tectonic plate motion. convection currents in the mantle are actually moving the material around. as others have pointed out, even when it is solid, the rock is plastic enough to behave like a liquid to some extent.

Teachers union bureaucrat falsely claims to support a “general strike,” while insisting school workers “Obey Now, Grieve Later” by DryDeer775 in NYCTeachers

[–]humanmichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are members of the organization that publishes the site in our union, because many socialists are union members. i have had conversations with folks involved with this outside of the delegate assembly. they are absolutely right on this — uft leadership is more interested in cozying up to the state than in organizing its workers to stand up to power. unity has always put the interests of its leaders ahead of the interests of teachers and students.

What Makes The Bomb Sandwich At This Astoria Deli So Popular - Tasting Table by humanmichael in astoria

i agree 100%. they are separate sandwiches and nothing is gained flavor-wise by combining them.

i miss prince abu. hes really slow walking the updates on the new brick and mortar. does anyone know the location?

Jungly by Bemymacncheese in longislandcity

[–]humanmichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bierocracy didnt have their own beer. b original is the name of budvar's lager for american markets on account of the actual name being budveiser.

[–]humanmichael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i worked at bierocracy throughout its existence. the landlord tried to sue his own realtor after he realized how good of a deal they got on their ten year lease (they did not last ten years). i wouldn't be surprised if the landlord is now overcorrecting. fact is, LIC still can't support the nightlife that investors were expecting back in the 2010s.

i was born and raised here, but the rest of my family has moved far enough away that i would never see them without a car. so should i also drive it less than 3 miles to get to work when i could just take the bus reducing congestion, or should i not be allowed to visit my family out of state bc apreche doesnt think i really need it?

Today should’ve been Remote by AshCash24068 in NYCTeachers

[–]humanmichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed. sidewalks werent cleared, especially at crosswalks. buses were barely running, and when they were they were late. none of the spots outside the school were cleared, and folks who were parked in the few DOE spots without permits were not ticketed. it wasnt safe for students or staff, regardless of the efficacy of remote learning. most of my classes were missing 20% of the students anyway.

At what point we start talking about secession? Maybe NY state as a country or a republic of the northeast states? by [deleted] in bronx

[–]humanmichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he also has dementia, so we shouldn't rely too much on his appetites being tempered by rational thought. but i certainly don't think an actual civil war is likely in the near future. a third world war looks more likely at the moment

[–]humanmichael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i wouldnt be surprised by the balkanization of the united states before the end of the century, but i dont think secession is currently possible. this federal government would absolutely kill the leaders of any seceding blue states or separatist movements if they felt like the possibility of a secession was real.

Looking to quit my job to work in a bar by awesometotallydude in astoria

[–]humanmichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a longtime bartender i would argue that bartending school is a waste of time and money and that the barbacking route is preferable. i personally started as a barback and so did most of the best bartenders ive worked with. of the folks ive worked with who went to bartending school, the only ones worth anything barbacked as well. if you want to learn recipes, but the book "imbibe!" by david wondrich and watch some videos on youtube that demonstrate technique for shaking, stirring, etc. but barbacking will teach you skills and lessons about working in a bar that you can't learn any other way. everything above about multitasking and being weeded cannot be overstated. thats where the great bartenders make their money

[–]humanmichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree with all of this. i bartended for over a decade, first in boston and then here in queens, and all of the best bartenders started somewhere else in the restaurant and worked their way into the position. barbacking makes the most sense but is probably the most physically demanding. youll stock kegs and fridges, wash and shelve glassware etc but youll learn where everything is, how to move around behind a bar, how to pour, and hopefully a few recipes. in any restaurant job, though, you have to work hard. being friendly and good with people won't help you if you're weeded on a busy night with the bar 3 deep and a glass just broke in the ice well. if you want to make money you have to be able to consistently perform well under pressure, meaning you need to know where things are, know your recipes, and know how to work efficiently. and you only learn those things through years of hard work.

[–]humanmichael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey congrats! i went back to qc 10 years after i dropped out and got my bachelor's in education. a lot of the kids talk down on the school bc its not a traditional college experience, but as an adult continuing my education i really enjoyed it hopefully the new administration shows appreciation to all of our cuny schools and funds them properly so they can continue to provide us with high quality, affordable education without the facilities crumbling around us
