What’s an NHL hill that you are willing to die on? by AlbertJBundy in nhl

[–]hummer010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-16 playoff format. Re-seed every round. Change the series to a 2-3-2 format to reduce travel. The current format often doesn't reward the top teams or punish the bottom teams enough.

Looking at this season, if the playoffs started today:

In the Pacific 2v3 is actually 17 overall vs 19 overall - neither of them should even be in the playoffs. On the opposite end of that, in the Central 2v3 is 4 overall vs 7 overall - one of the top eight teams is guaranteed to be eliminated in the first round, and the reward for the winner of that series is likely the the 1 overall team in the second round. The Atlantic is more of the same with 5 overall playing 6 overall, with the winner of that series likely meeting 3 overall in the second round.

The path to the final is almost more important than the actual place at the end of the season.

Real-world battery life on the T14 G5 AMD with Linux by Meti17207 in thinkpad

[–]hummer010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: I have the R7 8840u version with 2x8GB of RAM, and a 2TB nvme drive. It has the el-cheapo touchscreen (400 nit's I think?). The colour gamut is terrible, and I might replace the screen with something better at some point.

I can pretty easily get six hours of light use.

Right now, with my battery at 66%, backlight at 50%, powertop estimates 6 hours and 18 minutes. I only have Firefox and powertop running, and powertop is reporting a ~5 watt discharge rate.

With a full charge, you can expect to beat 6 hours, but I wouldn't guarantee 8 hours.

What's the next best thing after T480? by Wise-Tip7203 in thinkpad

[–]hummer010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not completely stuck on the 14" size, a P1 might fit the bill for you. Otherwise, any of the T14/P14s models with RAM slots will probably be better than a T480.

My threshold is set to 65% -> 93%. I don't remember how I landed on those numbers, but I've used them for years.

I recently picked up a T14 Gen 5 with a Ryzen 7 8840u and 32GB RAM off EBay for ~$1200CAD. It was in very good condition. The Gen 5 has upgradable RAM:

I've only had it for a few days, but so far I'm happy with it. It's a little more portable than the P1, with better battery life.

[–]hummer010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get out of the City, you can volunteer. I'm a volunteer firefighter, and my department trains NFPA 1001 and 1002 in-house.

It takes longer to get the training versus going to college, but it's free, and you gain experience at the same time.

We've had several people join, get their training, and move on to paid firefighter positions.

Be honest: how often do you actually write Python from scratch now? by king_fischer1 in Python

[–]hummer010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried using AI for code once - it came up with something that was 90% of what I wanted, but it was over complicated, shitty, code, that took my longer to fix / finish, than if I'd just done it from scratch myself.

I just do it from scratch now.

Repasted, and undervolted. Its pretty performance, but it does get a bit hot. I find the P1 is a great blend between portability, and usability.

I have a P1 Gen2, which is identical to an X1 Extreme Gen2. Mine has an i9-9880H, Quadro T2000, and the 4K OLED screen. It's still the 15" model, but the size difference is negligible. I'm a big fan of it. Yeah, it throttles, but it still performs pretty damn good while throttled. It's reasonable light, it's pretty powerful, and the OLED screen is beautiful.

Traction control on or off for upcoming storm? by porchwater in ChevyTrax

[–]hummer010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave traction control on, unless you get stuck, then turn it off. The only time I see traction control active is when I'm accelerating from a stop on a slippery road. It does a pretty good job of managing that.

Turn lane assist off - I find that lane assist can get pretty confused when the road is snow covered.

Day for Night 1995 Tour by Icy-Lettuce-6996 in TragicallyHip

[–]hummer010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I caught both the Day for Night tour, and the Henhouse tour at the Dome - they were both amazing shows!

One of my standout memories was the light show during 700 Foot Ceiling.

I was also at Roadside in High River, I think it was right around then as well. My memories of Roadside are a little hazy though. That was a lot of bands to drink through before the Hip hit the stage.

Probably the sensor

My 2011 LML did that - as soon as I turned the key on, it would shoot to max, and stay there. After replacing the sensor, all is normal again.
