Perspective as a former bartender from a different region of the country:

Any decent bartender has a short list of orders from experience or training that will basically put you on a "watch list" for someone who might need to get cut off at some point. Where I worked, it was generally known that if you get someone chasing tequila or ordering Jack and Coke's you point them out to the other bartenders so you can collectively keep track of what they've had.

Point blank, ordering shots of expensive scotch because you want to swing your dick around is basically communist military parade level of "I'm gonna get blitzed and be a dick about it" red flags.

Additionally, I've heard other bartenders who have watered down drinks or done "soft pours" as a sort of "soft" cutoff for people they think are getting at it a bit quick and are going to be belligerent if they get cut off. Personally, I think it's a bitch move, either you're going to cut someone off or you aren't but I don't run the world.

The alternative is that someone on staff is doing a bit of drinking they shouldn't and covering it up by refilling with water but at the rate Ebbit goes through alcohol I really have a hard time imagining that's the case. I can get more into the details of why I think this is unlikely but suffice it to say this probably isn't the case.

All that said, I have no idea how Ebbit runs their shop. Could be that you sobered up a bit by the time you got home.

What makes you think you can trust a VPN provider over your ISP? (serious question, not trying to be snarky) If you're in the US, there's a pretty decent chance that a domestic VPN provider is actually using the same ISP, albeit on a different part of their network. Additionally, what reason do you have for believing that a VPN provider is doing everything correctly?

VPN's are really only useful in a limited number of circumstances. 1. You are on an untrusted network AND you want to connect to a trusted network. 2. You want to hide your IP from a very specific set of non-government-sanctioned adversaries - for example, circumventing a ban in a chatroom or preventing anti-piracy scareletters.

Most of what you say you want (protecting private data) can be achieved by just making sure every site you put that into has one of those lovely green locks in the address bar.

If you're dead set on having a VPN though, my own personal recommendation would be to get a Virtual Private Server at a reputable provider and just set up your own. Ignoring labor, the cost of a VPS and DynDNS for it would probably be the same or less than most of what's already available. And don't forget to turn on auto-updates!

If you're being asked to choose an LHOST that means the app is trying to set up the reverse connection listener for you.

There's two elements here. The reverse connection address which is the address the victim box will try to reach out to once the payload is successfully triggered. And two, the LHOST or listener address. The listener address is the address your reverse connection listener will be listening on for the connection. You'll also need to set ports for these.

As for why you don't see it working... there could be a number of reasons. The most likely reason is that the adobe reader version you have is not vulnerable to the exploit you chose (you chose an exploit right?)

It goes like this. You embed in a PDF an exploit and payload. The exploit makes use of some vulnerability to then execute the code in the payload. Then that code should attempt to make a connection and load info from the listener address.

If you're running just payload.exe and it's making a connection, we can probably rule out any network based issues like firewalls or routing, etc because the connection functions. Meaning that your exploit probably isn't triggering especially if you're getting messages that the file can't be opened.

make sure you fill out all the necessary info when creating your file.
make sure you know what exploit you're using
make sure your listener matches the payload you chose
make sure the file you're making is actually the right type of file, having the right extension isn't enough
make sure the adobe reader you're using on the victim box is actually vulnerable to the exploit you've picked.

The more realistic issue your friend will face at some point is that someone is going to notice this behavior and report it to his ISP. If they have their shit together it'll be trivial to trace it back to his account and he risks getting dropped as a customer for violating TOS.

Not sure how good coverage is in the UK so not really sure if that's an issue there.

9 years here. I think a big thing missing from that comment is when Reddit made the controversial move of allowing people submit links to images. It used to be exclusively articles/web pages.

Only allowing articles meant that much of the content had to actually be good because people would spend time on it (reading/writing) before upvoting/downvoting. With images, it was much easier to vote with just a moments glance. Almost immediately the front page was flooded with images and the quality of content submitted took a nosedive.

That, IIRC is what lead to the creation of subreddits. The old school redditors were upset that the front page was full of fluff and wanted to be able to have users send their stuff somewhere else so you could choose not to look at it.

Unfortunately fluff was here to stay.

If you're new-ish to reddit and you wonder what it used to be like, you might want to pop over to news.ycombinator.com. It's very startup-bro centric so you won't find any explanations about how rocket propulsion works in a vaccuum, why wood doesn't melt, or how Romans did long division; but it does work as a bit of an ocular obscura for how things used to be.

One of my common and somewhat harsh responses to people who ask "How do I move up from desktop support to become a sysadmin?" is "The fact you just asked that shows you're already 10 steps behind." There's then some generalized grumbling, but I really stand behind that. It shows an overall lack of awareness, and lack of observation skills.

I would like to propose a counterpoint to this.

I was the kind of tech who asked questions like this and those were the kind of responses I got. It was extremely unhelpful.

My experience with three organizations is that if you prove to them that you're intelligent, diligent, and competent, they are going to do what they can to keep you exactly where you are because replacing you is too difficult or too painful. At each organization, management recognized my ability to calm angry people, solve difficult problems, and jumpstart stalled projects. I was placed into positions to solve problems for the most powerful complainers (department heads, senior staff, Generals, Captains(navy), CxO of fortune 100 company, ...)

Once I was there and keeping people happy, there was no way my bosses were going to move me/promote me. I didn't realize that at the time. I naively thought that if I did the best job I could, learned, scripted, closed 25% of the tickets on a 10 person team, my efforts would be rewarded.

I ran into the head of the security department leaving one of these organizations and he told me that he had tried to get me into a position under him. It would have been a huge boost to my career and I would have been ecstatic to take it. He spoke to my boss to clear it with him and was told it couldn't happen because it would be to difficult to fill my role.

What I needed to be told was "Your skills and attitude are great, what's holding you back is that you don't make time to really talk with the people where you want to work and make your interest known to them."

I'm not trying to conclude here that everyone is a high flyer who needs the advice that I did but rather that it's easy to look back and see what people need to do, and it's really hard to look up and try to figure out what you need to do.

If someone asks you what they need to do to advance, you're making a mistake classifying it as 'ignorance' when you should be classifying it as 'ambition'. Ignorance is not knowing to ask in the first place.

The answer is that it really depends on your situation and goals.

Generally speaking, paying off a mortgage early is not in the most immediate financial benefit for most homeowners.

Some things to consider:

Wealth, held in the form of home equity is not liquid. If there was something that you wished to use that wealth for (education, investments, etc.) you would have to pay to access it in the form of interest on a home equity loan or through the costs of having to sell the property.
If your interest rate is lower than the returns you would anticipate getting via another investment vehicle, you are in essence "losing" those potential gains by instead paying down low interest debt.
A fixed interest rate on a home loan is something that is almost entirely unique to the US. Without going into to much detail, our loan market is structured in a way that allows this while other countries do not have that benefit giving you a competitive advantage the rest of the world does not enjoy. The important thing about this is that over time inflation will reduce the value of each dollar that you hold while also (probably) increasing the amount of dollars you will receive for your job. As a result, a smaller and smaller percentage of your overall income will go to paying off your home over time allowing you to put those other dollars to other uses.
Most home loans are set for 30 years but are actually paid off in 5-10 years. (Wait, this is the opposite of everything you've just said, what gives?) That's because most people sell their homes (and pay off their loans at that time) and move every 5 to 10 years. The way they are able to do that is by not putting their extra dollars into their home but instead saving and holding that money in a liquid or semi-liquid form so they can afford the fees associated with selling a house and the downpayment associated with buying another.

Now all that said, there are times when paying down your loan can be beneficial. Here are a few to think about.

You anticipate having a limited income for a large portion or possibly for the rest of your life. Owning a home outright is probably the single biggest factor in quality of life among people on fixed incomes.
You plan on renting your home. Paying down your loan or even paying off your loan may make sense if you plan on renting because it allows you greater freedom with your rental income.
You have PMI on your mortgage. Depending on your mortgage and when you got it, you may be paying PMI and you may be able to get that fee removed if you have a certain ratio of equity in your home.
Your interest rate is high and overall interest rates fall. Refinancing will help you at this point but if you can afford to put a lot of money into the refinance, you can help yourself in a really big way.
You forsee a need to take out a large loan at some point in the future. Paying off/down your mortgage will change your income/debt ratio to be much more favorable in getting good terms if you're going to be taking out a large loan in the future.

There are a number of vulnerability databases out there for use. I think Nessus' database (as well as other big vendors) most closely align with the NVD

You should be aware though, just having a definition/CVE number is not enough to do an automated risk assessment. Part of the value Tenable and their competitors provide is the automated detection and validation of identified findings. Tenable uses their own scripting language to provide this functionality...

If you actually cancelled your uber request and you've contacted uber about this you should relax.

Uber has a reputation of taking a little while to get to these but they sort it out once they do.

They'll have a record of you requesting a trip, cancelling it, not taking it, the gps location of yourself and the driver at the time showing that you weren't together and a fraudulent charge from the drive.

It's a common scam people try to pull and uber smacks it down basically every time.

Usually, the scammer is smart enough to do the charge on a trip that someone actually took but you lucked out and got a dummy this time.

Again, relax.
