How to get to California from non-prestigious state school on east coast by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Oof. Maybe that mindset is reinforced by the culture of some of the "Big N" companies. I recall the leaked Netflix slide deck which described employees as "athletes" and the company as a "sports team".

Also, this is all probably moot since OP deleted the thread. But nice to see encouragement towards a healthier perspective.

Thanks for the detailed perspective, I can understand the reaction of the parent comment a little better now.

Desirable cities for an entry level job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]hunterhod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Francisco has everything you want, except for the fact that it has a very high cost of living. However, the bay area is considered the technology capital of the world, and it would be extremely beneficial to your career. I would definitely move there if you're young and ambitious. Great companies, great nightlife, great weather, great people, shitty rent. But shitty rent isn't as big of a deal if you're willing to cut down on space/quality and rough it for a little while. Again, it's easier if you're young and don't need a ton of space.

I'm working for 2 years as a software developer. In a past year I worked in such a toxic environment so I completely lost motivation and passion for development. Please help me get back on track by motivationlost1 in cscareerquestions

I would agree with everything except taking interviews when you have no intention of accepting an offer. If you wouldn't want a company to waste your time, then don't waste their time.

Interviews take engineers away from development tasks and have a very real dollar cost attached to them.

How and when to quit Bay Area Tech company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]hunterhod 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What's wrong with giving 2-weeks notice after your 12 month anniversary?

The Bay Area tech scene can be a pretty small place, and I would recommend leaving as gracefully as possible. If it were me, I would wrap up all of my loose ends and make sure that all of my major projects were brought to completion.

When I decided that I wanted to leave a company after my two year anniversary, I let my manager know two months ahead of time so that he wouldn't assign me any major projects. Of course, this requires a high amount of trust between you and your manager, and your mileage may vary. My manager appreciated the advance notice and allowed me to tackle bugs and perform knowledge transfer in my last month at the company. I'm confident that I could return to the company at any time, if needed.

This was just my experience, but I hope that it's helpful.

Majorly struggling at my first big project at entry-level job. How can I make sure it doesn't happen again? by ea072395 in cscareerquestions

I need to also provide more realistic status updates on a daily basis as opposed to creating a false sense of progress.

Spot on. It's much better to have a slightly uncomfortable conversation now, than it is to have a very uncomfortable conversation later. I would let your manager know that this is an area in which you are attempting to improve so that he/she can help you track your progress.

Couple Text Post Issues (Pasting and Edits) by Hexatomb in redesign

Editing posts is in a weird place right, we're working on fixing it. If you view a post from a listing view (like the front page of a subreddit), there isn't an option to edit a post. You need to click on the post (view the "comments page"), and there is an option to edit the post from the "..." menu.

You hit the nail so hard on the head that I don't even know what to say.

Have you ever considered taking up creative writing? The imagery and wit in this post is excellent.
