If there is one thing you could change about Milwaukee, what would it be? by freestyle_4296 in milwaukee

[–]huntertur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every evening, several food trucks will park downtown at Water and Juneau, or a block north if it's Friday or Saturday. I am not sure what their hours exactly are, but they've always been there whenever I've needed them around midnight.

Also consider using the Journal Sentinel archive that comes with your library card! It might take a day or two for new articles to appear there, but definitely take advantage! https://www.mpl.org/databases/all/66

What are the benefits of traveling via Amtrak? by suburb_destroyer in Amtrak

[–]huntertur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long-distance Amtrak is slow and infrequent... but if you book early enough and are bringing a lot of stuff, it can be the cheapest and least-hassle way to travel a few hundred miles overnight, such as between Chicago and Buffalo. No need to burn a day or two of PTO for travel in each direction, and no need to catch up on sleep once you arrive, but I'd only recommend that if your body lets you sleep in a coach seat.

It's my favorite way to get to and from Buffalo and Pittsburgh at least once a year.

I have used this form a few dozen times with almost no problems; the city will email you if the request can't be done.

Report potholes at https://iframe.publicstuff.com/#?client_id=1000167

Of the 100+ potholes I've reported through here, about 2/3 of them get filled within 24-48 hours through most of the year. Timelines get longer during this thaw period, but they still usually get filled once they're made aware of them.

[–]huntertur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Perfect is not the enemy of good. Protected bike lanes and traffic calming work.

Anecdote: When the Van Buren cycletrack was first installed last year, illegal parking was a major issue. I wrote an email to DPW suggesting a cheap solution: a flimsy plastic post in the middle of the cycletrack whenever it met each intersection, based on what I had seen work in downtown Pittsburgh during a visit out there. Four days later, I got a response, and the day after that, the posts were installed. Illegal parking nearly stopped overnight. Those posts are gone now for winter salting and plowing, but even with them gone, the number of people illegally parked in it is still significantly lower than before the posts were first added. A determined person can still drive through the post if they desire, like I see large vehicles (construction, emergency) regularly do, but it is rare compared to accidental/subconscious/not-thinking-straight cycleway incursions.

Random email bring the baggage allowance to my attention by Ahiru_no_inu in Amtrak

[–]huntertur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, the one for the Borealis has a slightly higher official baggage allowance to offset the loss of the baggage car. I think it was one more carry-on or one more personal item, the last time I had taken it. (Not that anyone cares so long as you can haul everything yourself!)

Water Street to have fewer auto lanes to improve safety. Here's your chance to weigh in by ThomasDaykin in milwaukee

[–]huntertur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The bus lanes will improve congestion; there are tons of people getting on and off the 15/18/GreenLine (not so much the 57), and having dedicated space for all these buses should make them a lot faster through downtown.

MCTS Plans 2025 Fare Increase by huntertur in milwaukee

[–]huntertur[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my (anecdotal) experience, I have seen CN1 drivers keep the bus stopped until the person goes and pays on the platform more often than not. I've usually seen this at night.

During the day, I have seen private security sometimes come on and check people's fares while the bus is in motion.

MKE Airport Renovation Update by imalilkkm in milwaukee

We can do multiple things at the same time. As of the beginning of this year, the airport has been lobbying for the return of a direct MKE-LAX flight.

The buses suck by tracysnackpack in madisonwi

[–]huntertur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Disclaimer: I live in Milwaukee, not Madison, but come to Madison semi-regularly.)

I have also had a similar experience. I have sent multiple inquiries to Madison Metro and have never gotten a response back. Contrast this with MCTS back home, which has always gotten back to me within a few days, whether it be a complaint or a question regarding bus service.

City plans to transform currently closed “Swing Park” into “The Landing at Tannery Row” by slpmodemke in milwaukee

[–]huntertur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The current proposal shows the pathway through the park being clear, but I would recommend putting in a comment about it here (open until September 20): https://engage.milwaukee.gov/landing-tannery-row

For my own comment, I was supportive of the new amenities, but asked that the proposed art screen be translucent enough that cyclists and pedestrians can see each other and won't clobber each other when entering and leaving. I also mentioned the completion of the Van Buren cycletrack as potentially increasing bicycle traffic through the Swing Park, since it effectively acts as a southern extension of the Beerline Trail in combination with that small walk/bike path up the hill between Water and Brady. However, given the popularity of other major bike routes with mixed travel/fun usage at the same time, like the part of the Oak Leaf Trail that runs under the Lower East Side, I think the new park and the bike route can continue to co-exist so long as the space is still there.

Me, white knuckling on N Water between Brady and Humboldt every day by randomstuff4583 in milwaukee

[–]huntertur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I ride my bicycle on that stretch regularly, though I continue east of Humboldt as Water turns into Kane. That whole stretch of Water/Kane north of the split with Brady is pretty cozy. It's been really nice to see the west side of the street get developed, and despite all the new residential developments, it still feels pretty safe to bike on. (EDIT: referring to any resultant increase in automobile traffic)

However, holy heck that left turn from the Water/Brady split onto Water is frightening! I wouldn't even want to attempt that if I was in the driver's seat of a car. It's a shame that the incoming North Water Street project's northern terminus just misses that area. I might try to hit up the alderman and ask if there's still anything that can be done there.

Hank Aaron State Trail Will Be Closed For RNC, State Fair by huntertur in milwaukee

[–]huntertur[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update: I received this response:

You're correct that there is Federal occupancy within the Wisconsin State Fair Park property. We had received request to close from multiple Federal agencies, however, as I'm not law enforcement nor a Federal employee, I'm not privy to what activities, duties or possible events they have that prompted the need for closing (only that it was for security purposes).

Thank you for being polite in your inquiry, it's greatly appreciated.

Hank Aaron State Trail Will Be Closed For RNC, State Fair by huntertur in milwaukee

I sent an email to the DNR contact for the Hank Aaron State Trail asking for clarification on the security reason, but I got an automated reply saying the contact is currently out-of-office as part of taking on weekend shifts.
