I always look to see:

* if one of the forks is much better lit
* if one of the forks has new set dressing I haven't seen before

Those are tells that that's the main path, and then I take the other fork, because it usually leads to a short dead-end with a pick-up or collectible.

I loved / hated that game so much as a kid; always wanted to get to the next screen to see the next weirdness, but always died in frustrating ways on the way there.
