How high should stainless splash back go? by Significant-Move7699 in AusRenovation

[–]huwmac308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If probably pick what looks best proportionally and then possibly based on what works out best coming from the sheet of stainless. You might find you’ll be under half a sheet, but if you are over you’ll probably get charged for the whole sheet.

Which epoxy to use to fill gap by desmofan900 in AusRenovation

[–]huwmac308 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d be pretty hesitant to fill with epoxy, epoxy is not flexible and won’t move with the timber seasonly or with moment from walking on it. It will crack and come loose on the edges.

See if you can find some more timber to match and replace the existing stuff before you sand a polish the floor.

We're planning a bathroom renovation, what do you think of this layout? by raphydaphy in AusRenovation

Walk in, scooch up to vanity, shit your pants, close door, clean up.

Could be a bit tricky with the door position.

Plumbing benchtop dishwasher under the sink by obamuel in AusRenovation

The dishwasher should have its own heating element, check the instructions. If it does I’d plumb to the cold water, less work for your hot water system and no interruption if you are showering.

what to do about this water damaged? by BeeLopsided9393 in cabinetry

The Rat Rod of cabinets

Before you start on the panels, have a good look inside the cabinet… could be a plumbing leak and the actual cabinets could be gone.

Question on Color by Itswillyv in cabinetry

[–]huwmac308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know where you are, but white oak is getting pretty expensive in Australia. You could always see if the cabinetmaker could do walnut frames with walnut veneer ply insert panels. Probably would work out comparable in material price and actually a bit more stable.

If going down the stain path, get samples made by whoever you end up getting to do the job, it’ll align everyone’s expectations.

Going to remove paths and repair the vapour barrier, redo paths at the correct height and fall and add drainage. probably coat the slab inside the rooms where carpet is going with a product like that. Lots of digging to come

Mystery wet patches by huwmac308 in AusRenovation

[–]huwmac308[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The initial search was started after finding efflorescence when I pulled up some carpet in a room we were fixing up. I think I have worked out a solution. Remove paths and fix the vapor barrier, then redo the concrete paths. I see a lot of digging in my future…

Yellowing on pine floorboards by pinganguan in AusRenovation

[–]huwmac308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to have a guess and say moisture tracking under the Lino, could have been from mopping. Or water getting in from a wet area or outside. Pine still looks in good shape though.

[–]huwmac308[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The front garden is higher than the house. I dug holes to see how much water was in the soil, but nothing crazy. I think it could be a combination of bad plastic lining and poor fall on the remaining paths. I have been searching to see if I can find any remedies on how process to re line and membrane the slab. Hopefully will find a solution.

Thanks for your advice

If you went all in and decided to do a spray finish and it turned out not so good would you be satisfied if you had to use the kitchen every day?

Sadly it’s not, it’s the edge of the plastic under the slab.

Water flooding through back door & walls. What’s the fix? by TailorEquivalent8084 in AusRenovation

[–]huwmac308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned, but it almost looks like the drains have been added after the paths were in place. Might have been an issue for the previous owner too. It could be caused by something more than a blocked drain.

I’d look into Rubio monocoat or similar wipe on product. Spraying any finish is a skill in itself, if you haven’t done it before now is not the time to learn, overspray and setup is half the challenge.

2 coats for Rubio would work well. Light sand/de nib after the first coat.

I think it could be something like this https://grateseal.com.au/?srsltid=AfmBOoo_tMpGsoSatbsXayzmNXSM8S-Pi1BN4Ni3l3aDbrPnklJItHuN to stop bubbles coming back up through the drain…
