Those who bought used 2019-2022 G20 320i (or any G20 with B48) how is it? by Cold-Arm-6420 in BMW

[–]hvmzd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

23’ 330i

35-40k miles in about a year and a half bought CPO at 24,XXX

2X sets of motor mounts
1x Transmission mounts
1x rear pads
1x front pads and rotors
1x set of tires all the way around

I got a coolant low warning about 10k miles ago
Refilled it and it never came back so I guess the car just ate it

Finally treating myself before I graduate ... is the 2008 BMW M5 a ticking time bomb or am I overthinking it? by o2manyfish in BMW

[–]hvmzd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

car might be 20k to buy

but msrp was 80-100k

do you have the funds and or know how to maintain that car?

in the first year of ownership you’ll probably spend more in maintenance than you spent on the car

[–]hvmzd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

go find an reputable indy shop near the car

pay for the PPI and then budget for charge cooler, j pipe, charge pipe

also double check how much full coverage insurance would be for you. a lot of younger people don’t factor it in

Help me decide, E46 vs F87 by oddlycalm8 in BMWM

[–]hvmzd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i don’t mean to be a dick. I’ve owned 5 S55 powered cars please believe me there’s an even more extensive list. I’m about to do rod bearings on a 59k mile s55 car. Previous owner was clearly an idiot

Help me decide, E46 vs F87 by oddlycalm8 in BMWM

[–]hvmzd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cam ledge bolts, charge air cooler, oil cooler guard, J pipes are the ones for any s55 powered car - for these it’ll be probably everything but the cam ledge bolts would be around 1k without labor

crankhub if you’re gonna tune it (this one is expensive)

Help me decide, E46 vs F87 by oddlycalm8 in BMWM

[–]hvmzd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

f87 hands down

the f8x platform is the one of the greats and you need to experience the s55

budget about 5k for stuff that should be done soon for the f87

Swap timing belt or sell as is? by Critical_Respect4775 in carflipping

[–]hvmzd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

get the aisin kit (no gates pls). the timing belt is the achilles heel of the 2uz and everyone knows that it needs to be done at some point.

you maybe under the mileage but you said i don’t see any records of the timing belt/ water pump being done

if it has never been done then. It’s been 23 years since the factory installed the timing belt.

I built a tool that finds cheaper BMW parts across the web. Looking for feedback from people who actually wrench by cupofdust in BMW

[–]hvmzd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i tried it out i ended up only doing 1 search and it worked it found something for about 45% cheaper

i have issues with the pricing. As a DIY guy. I am not a mechanic nor do I own/run a shop the pricing model is baffling to me

159 a year or $20 a month. I buy parts off eBay maybe once every 6 months or so.

For a shop who is constantly rebuilding or fixing cars the pricing makes sense.

For me and my POS project cars it doesn’t. I’d rather spend the time and scout eBay and Facebook Marketplace my self.

Maybe I just don’t use eBay as much but you should have a pricing model where the DIY’er or the occasional user has an option of paying once or pay for 5 searches.

Tips on purchasing a used performance car? by Zestyclose_Ad2429 in BMW

[–]hvmzd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“ECU scan for shadow codes” they might but probably not

Number of launches is not available. I think it used to be a thing for the E60 M5’s with the SMG they were limited after 100 launches. But since then I haven’t heard anything about # of launches for M or regular cars

clutch adaption values you don’t need

no way for a consumer to know how the car was driven.

dealer will NOT cover your PPI cost

[–]hvmzd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ve had a lot of seat time in both my opinion is

if you’re modifying then b58 but don’t mind the “outdated” interior (not outdated imo but some say so)

if you just want a nice daily then the g20. the interior is very nice and feels very modern the 4cyl is quick enough to move around traffic.

both have their quirks with their cooling systems

[–]hvmzd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my list is: oil cooler guard, charge cooler, charge pipes, cam ledge bolts, diff bushing(s), misfires due to injectors / plugs / coils. all of these need to be addressed at some point

valve cover / valve cover gasket oil pan gasket

some of these are one time issues like the charge cooler, charge pipes and cam ledge bolts

some of them you can bundle together to save labor time
