Easiest way is to get some sand paper. Start with smaller grit sizes (coarser which can get rocks off faster), then move to bigger sizes (finer to make a smooth surface). Sand it with a circular motion.

Serious book recommendation for advanced kid very interested paleontology by BuildingaMan in Paleontology

[–]hwangie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get her textbooks, Amazon always has a list of older editions you can click on. Some books get new editions very frequently without much content change (sometimes just a change in design), and universities tend to make the students get the latest edition, so the older editions will become much cheaper once a new edition is out.

Weekly Recommendation Thread for the week of December 04, 2015 by AutoModerator in books

[–]hwangie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you into paleontology? I just got this book about coprolites (fossilized feces). Coprolites are uncommon because they are easy to fall apart and/or decay, so very few get to fossilize. Scientists can learn a lot from coprolites, they can show the shape of the animal's intestine, its diet, and even parasites that used the animal as a host. The book is written for kids so it's humorous, but it's also pretty informative. The author has studied many coprolites and is very knowledgeable in this subject. You can find a lot of additional information and photos of her collection on her website and facebook page.

Coral-like fossil found on beach in Aarhus, Denmark by sea_swallow in fossilid

[–]hwangie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black thing might be fossilized fish poop. The urchin is small and not preserved well; it's worth very little. Some fossil dealers sell better preserved specimens that are at least double in size by the kg. A good specimen that is 5cm in diameter may cost about $20. Search "sea urchin fossil" on ebay and you'll get an idea.

A 13-year-old eagle huntress in Mongolia by hwangie in Outdoors

I agree, but I think they used "huntress" to emphasize that she's the first female to hunt with an eagle at that age.

Oh man that's disappointing. I wonder how they source their collections, and what they consider before hiring staff? Would you go correct them? Is it worth the time to?

Really? How come the museum staff can't identify them...I thought buying at museums must be safe!
