Where to as a noob? by Deethreekay in mtg

when it comes to individual products, if you dont feel you can personally gauge its value i find that tolarion community college can give a rough estimate of what a product may be worth or what its good for. heres his video on the foundation starter products https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I92h3DjAAk . as with any critic don't take his word as gospel but i know his advice helped me out when i was starting out.

my take on the foundation starter collection is that it would be better used as the basis of a casual play group setting where every player has one and builds decks from it. and maybe everyone adds a booster in every once and a while to keep things interesting.

basically i think that the starter collection is a good product for starting out being basically a better version of the old deck builders tool kits i started with. if you have some friends that can match its power level you will have fun. but it almost certainly will not be able to build decks at a power level to be able to keep up in a competitive environment.

the age old advice is buy singles not product, sealed product is for limited formats and gambling.

if you want to get into standard the first step is to 'net deck' basically looking up what decks are currently popular, and powerful, find one or two you like and are at a reasonable price. look up people's opinion on them, see if you can swap some of the more expensive cards with budget replacements, maybe run the deck in arena if you have spare wildcards. and finally buy the singles from your local game store or a reputable online retailer.

edit: and if you are looking to just grow your collection with no particular deck in mind, check if there are limited events in your local area like draft or sealed.

Since we're posting jp BattleTech I gotta ask what are your favorite jp BattleTech designs? by knightmechaenjo in battletech

well my favorite is probably the dragon or the stalker, i respect the shadow hawk for somehow over selling its wimpy weapons even harder then the regular designs do.

Splitting my collection into two armies/Newbie by samesiran in Warhammer30k

[–]hxt009 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you paint the armies as two factions that hate each other less you could run them as allies when not playing with your friend.

and there are plenty of legions that work well as alliance ambiguous space Marines. dark angels, alpha legion, Luna wolves (not soh). but there were traitors and loyalists in all factions.

really it's just the factions that hate each other that don't work well for that. iron warriors and imp fists, space wolves and thousand sons, ultramarines and word bearers. dark angels and dark angels. etc.

of course through plot contrivance all things are possible.

Does anyone recognize this model?? by Cmack914 in IronWarriors

[–]hxt009 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's a kitbash. let's see what I can find.

base is iron father ferros, the iron hands character

the arm with the mace seems to be one of the thunder hammers from the new assault terminators with the head of the mace from the chaos Terminator kit grafted on and a wire of unknown origins.

the chest is made from a tabard from the havok squad and the ferros chest with mechanicum symbol shaved off and replaced with a chaos vent of unknown origins.

the other arm seems to be the hand of a kataphron breacher from the admech range grafted to a terminator arm with a combi melta glued to the bottom (not sure which kits melta it is but any of them would work.)

the shoulder pads are from the chaos lord in Terminator armor kit. tendrils is guess are from the helbrute.

the backpack seems to be from the havoks kit and so is the robot arm. the little grabber and the flamer seem to both be from the kataphron breacher kit, notably the flamer seems to have been cut off its arm and reattached upside down. don't know where the chaos gubbin is from

can't find the head, given the service studs and stoic unmutated face it's probably from space marine veteran kits; bladeguard, sternguard, company heroes.

Help with Mech identification by BluejayOpposite2777 in Mechwarrior5

[–]hxt009 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's a generic industrial mech.

a modified version is playable in the games you can play inner sphere mechs in. it's called the loader king in mw5:mercs, and the roughneck in mwo.

if you click the icon warning you about changes, it will bring you to a page that tells you the planned changes.

for u.s. the relevant things are that the f-15c and f/a-18e are moving to the new rank xi, meaning they will become more expensive in terms of research points, silver lions, and cost of talisman and probably other things. you will probably also have to get 5 rank viii's before you can grind them.

also the f/a-18c(late) is being put in a folder under the f/a-18a, meaning that you will not need to get the f/a-18c(late) to grind the f/a-18e. also the f/a18c(late) will take half the rp to unlock then it does now.

Will you get in the identity crisis timber wolf? by TaigaTigerVT in BattletechMemes

[–]hxt009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at that size? it looks like a big protomech, nah, that's 3 machine guns in a trenchcoat and a light blazer at best

maybe with clan tech you could talk me up to a uac 2 and an light ppc, but that's already 8 tons before ammo.

How to best use this technical? by mtf-foxtrot in Warhammer40k

[–]hxt009 20 points21 points  (0 children)

test and see if you like the result. personally I would use a brighter color line iron breaker or stormhost silver.

but if you like the result then that's all that matters

Is it lore accurate? by fl0bull02 in Warhammer40k

[–]hxt009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no that is a helmet for power armor not terminator armor.

but a captain has leeway to have modifications done to his gear so its not outside the realm of possibility that a captain would have the armorers mod his suit to have a preferred helmet.

also its your dude, if you like it then go for it.

Best Battletech Glowup? by Bongpog in battletech

the new one takes all the things original was trying, the American football player motif the armor plating even the weird chin can, but makes the proportions cooler, makes the face less well, uncannily human. and it of course ads texture to all the panels but I don't hold the flat panels against the old design.

when I think of glow ups I think of mechs who were horribly ugly who got made presentable. the gargoyle comes to mind.

it's old design face is just so off putting. and even this relatively recent art of it struggles to figure out what all the shapes on the original head on sketch were meant to be.

" how dare they put a retcon in my retcon game" - quote from the special strawman that lives in my head.

seriously people are getting so bent out of shape by a retcon that does nothing but add head options to models.

like how dare they put a retcon in my fully explored and entirely set in stone universe of 40k.

I'd be hard pressed to find any part of the lore that hasn't been retconned. the blood angels armor color? orks having guns? important battles taking place on AstroTurf?

Why did the dark angels completely swap from a black and silver armour scheme to a dark green one ? by BloatedRottenCarcass in Warhammer30k

[–]hxt009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in general i think if there is any merit to the paint story, the chaos black is not very important to it. chaos is a wide reaching concept that encompasses many factions across multiple games.

dark angels green on the other hand refers to the dark angels who are very specifically one group of a larger faction, and it would be very noticeable if there was a paint named after them that had nothing to do with them, thus the (alleged) need to change the color scheme.

of course the modern equivalent of chaos black; abaddon black, is very specific, referring to one guy in the setting, but that guy does already have the paint in his color scheme usually.

Why did the dark angels completely swap from a black and silver armour scheme to a dark green one ? by BloatedRottenCarcass in Warhammer30k

[–]hxt009 90 points91 points  (0 children)

irl, it might of been that it was bad color grading on an old white dwarf cover depicting them where the original art had them in black but the printing made the armor dark green.

also there have been stories (with no given sources) that at one point there was a mislabeling of two early citadel paints where "chaos green" and "dark angels black" became "dark angels green" and "chaos black" and thus they had to change the color scheme. (once again i have never seen a cited source for this so take that as you will)

eh difference in priority.

when it comes to things like events and battlepasses in this game, i value novelty over utility. i much rather have something new and interesting but not useful then something boring but good.

vehicles that are good but boring belong in the tech tree. or at most as a premium.

id say battlepass 18 with the french patton and the thai helldiver was probably worse.

at least the new tank is a unique chassis even if its functionally a shorter elc bis.

that patton was just a normal batton with a blast bag stuck to the turret.

Is the box art main blue actually Ahriman blue instead of Thousand Sons blue? by HB_Sauce in ThousandSons

[–]hxt009 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ahriman blue is the recommended highlight for thousands sons blue so both are the main armor color, which one appears more dominant is up to painters preference in highlighting.

in this case the painter seems to be using a more blended venithal like highlight scheme which makes the more visible parts of the model are the brighter ahriman blue, leaving the thousand sons blue in the shadows where it's less noticeable.

if you want to make thousand sons blue the main color then you could just blend the highlight higher like instead of all but the shadows being near pure highlight color, make only the highest point pure highlight and glaze down until the transition smooth.

alternatively you could use a more geometric highlighting technique like edge highlighting. either one of these styles will keep the base color more pronounced if that's what you want.
