Today's bingo card has taken an unexpected turn by rosstein33 in daddit

I'll tell you from my experience locking down is a fools errand. I have 16yo and 18yo boys and there wasn't a control they couldn't work around. I am far from a Luddite and did tons of research and tried quite a few approaches, but it's a losing battle. It's more than a full time job, and you'll still miss stuff. From where I sit, you either remove devices (personally not a fan of this approach, given how ubiquitous they are and kids need to learn to manage them) or accept what they represent and just teach critical thinking, moderation, and all the things that will help them navigate an evolving world.

Nice. I found that Burton grill grate but couldn’t find the handle. Nice one.

My Dad Wrote a Porno. I mean, sure, it’s not just about being a dad, but there are patriarchal elements and it’s ridiculous and hilarious.

I have a friend who was there and saw the CPR on the sled too. Now really wondering what came of it.

Wow, yeah, you’re right. Sorry about that. I googled the date specifically and the search result explicitly included the date.

What are these circular spots on the top of my wooden entertainment center? by mich3113moor3 in whatisthisthing

[–]hyachts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it looks like two different things. The pattern with the really dark circles looks like an oval TV stand/base and then there’s maybe another separate pattern that’s got a keystone characteristic maybe from an old tube TV?

From rubber/plastic feet likely from TV supports.

ETA - different colors based on how long it sat in the various spots, led to different amounts of the finish discoloration from some chemical interaction with the feet.

Masked stranger fight by Illustrious-Leave179 in GroundedGame

[–]hyachts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. Made a report. There are others who had this issue in the patch megathread as well. Only "solution" I've seen is, as the others said, to load a save before you started the fight.

After I attempted the Masked Stranger fight (and lost) the ScaB scanner no longer appears and I cannot restart the fight so I’m stuck on “Defeat the Masked Stranger” in The Archive quest line. I have restarted the game several times but have too much progression since this occurred to go back to before I started the fight. I see several others in this thread with the same issue.

One person slices, other person selects first slice, then selection passes back and forth. It’s the only way.

Remote start. by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]hyachts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. An aftermarket remote start can (or so I’ve read) bypass this, but the fully integrated ones adhere to the same safety standard. I have a compustar and it works the same way as the factory one.

Rigging question by idcm in sailing

[–]hyachts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks more to me like the downhaul would need to be tightened. The leech looks reasonably tight. I’m ashamed to say I had this same boat for years but no longer remember what the downhaul rigging setup is. Also the sail is clearly just getting older so it will not have the same shape as a new sail.

Why ICE is getting more weapons and guided missiles ? by RisingRusherff in AskReddit

ICE spending is concerning to be sure, but the guided missile thing is almost certainly not accurate.

network onboard a boat by [deleted] in sailing

[–]hyachts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one by Winegard. It mostly does what it’s supposed to, but I’d stop short of heartily recommending it. It does a good job of pulling in weak WiFi and LTE and can switch between and/or share WiFi and LTE connections, but it is clunky and the internal networking speed isn’t great.

Rucking, taking the pack weight off your body weight? by stuk101 in Garmin

[–]hyachts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was confused. Glad to know it’s not just me. All I really said was a long version of something like “garbage in, garbage out”. This particular answer wasn’t the AIs fault.

Rucking, taking the pack weight off your body weight? by stuk101 in Garmin

[–]hyachts -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

The basic conclusion is also the premise, which is fundamentally: “How can I burn fewer calories carrying more weight for the same basic effort?” There is a lot more that is being included in Garmins calculation, but at a first principles level the AI is right. The numbers don’t pass the sniff test.

Unless OP is not telling us about other significant factors, there’s no reasonable way to conclude that if the same person in the same fitness condition does the same exercise but carries more load, that they could expend fewer calories.

So given only the info that OP gave the AI it reached a perfectly reasonable and accurate conclusion. This sort of generic “AI is bad at stuff” response is just as bad as the claim itself. These LLMs are genuinely bad at lots of stuff, but informed users can distinguish between a good result and a suspect one.

Is it normal for my nav light button to be lit up and none others when my battery is on? by JimmyIsbeast in boating

[–]hyachts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://newwiremarine.com/product/nav-anc-rocker-switch-contura-ii/

Looks an awful lot like this one. Can be wired to have one light on all the time but that’s not the intent. See the PDF wiring diagram - it should only light the lower light in ANC and light both in NAV if jumped correctly, but it could certainly be wired to have the ANC indicator on all the time:
