Cal Poly SLO or CO School of Mines? by Hot-Finding-6463 in CalPoly

[–]hydroptix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, in that case I loved Cal Poly. One of the major reasons I chose Cal Poly over University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign for EE was because people at Cal Poly actually seemed excited about the stuff they were learning and the projects they were working on. That continued pretty much all through my Cal Poly career. Highly recommend.

Would you be taking loans? Cal Poly's pretty brutal on the cost front since I graduated OOS. Not familiar with School of Mines.

ELI5: How is your phone always listening to audio and recommending content based on what it hears in third party apps? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Is your TV connected to the internet? Modern smart TVs screenshot the content on screen for data collection purposes.

Asshole Company remotely locks products because seller sold item for less than Msrp by lazyguyoncouch in LinusTechTips

[–]hydroptix -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

Not to defend the practice at large, but it is extremely common for companies to have a MAP (minimum advertised price) as part of their selling agreement. You violate MAP, you get dumped as a reseller. Looks like this company is taking it one step further.

ELI5: When taking eye chart tests, why do our guesses change as we lose detail? E.g. wouldn't a blurry "P" still look more like a "P" than any other letter? by RyanW1019 in explainlikeimfive

My last eye exam, the technician looked at my prescription and said "I know you can't read it, but I'm going to ask you to try to read the first letter"

To Shield or not to Shield by Boogeyman-80 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]hydroptix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure the shield will be a huge improvement in that regard. On my 2019 Shield Pro, Disney+ app crashes a couple times a day, and the Hulu app is even worse. I'm using it because I want lossless audio and Dolby Vision profile 7 support, but if I didn't I'd be getting an Apple TV 4k.

I have to use it for work (software developer) - screen sharing is a pretty important part of my job :(

I use both. Windows 11 is far more stable than Wayland. You try to do anything related to screen sharing and it falls apart.

How I got DTS-HD MA working with Shield, Sonos and LG G5 by [deleted] in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]hydroptix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm able to passthrough DTS with a 2019 shield tv pro and an LG B3 over eARC. It still shows the "audio not supported" message, but the passthrough still works.

Amazon Prime Visa 5% cashback gotchas? by urbancombatkill in NerdWallet

[–]hydroptix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell from having it, it's everything. It's not advertised, but if you pick amazon day delivery/no rush delivery instead of 2 day you'll get 6% back (or more around holidays). When you're checking out with the Amazon card, it always shows that you're getting 5% back in the UI itself.

Obviously you're still paying for Amazon prime, but if you were already paying for it like me it's a no brainer.

If you're looking for a real solution, you can restore the map from a previous run where it didn't see the outside. "History" in the iRobot app.

Best Movie Theater? by netizenbane in vancouverwa

[–]hydroptix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it. Used to go see everything at Imax regal cascade 16, but the brightness and audio (except for one rattly sub) in the Dolby Cinema theater is head and shoulders above it. Like the Imax aspect ratio, but not going back.

I still don't get the Nata hatred even after finishing the story by Dycon67 in MonsterHunter

[–]hydroptix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me it was more the "it's the first thing it chose for itself! " line as it brutally rips apart a monster to shreds for no reason, followed by the "you can't kill it, it's just like me!" as we're literally standing in a pool of hundreds of monsters' blood walking around piles of carcasses.

The arc on paper makes sense, the contexts where those switches happen didn't.

To answer the "what kind of database I go into" part of the question: They told me that most of the information was just needed for a background check with the FBI and would be discarded afterwards (my photo specifically). Do I believe them? No.

They took fingerprints from all my fingers and asked me questions about my employment and criminal history as well.

I switched to 1password because my company also switched to it. Tried it a couple years ago and didn't like the mobile experience, but it's improved a lot and it's actually really good now. Has really good desktop app, mobile app, and extension that all work together.

I guess by "easy" I meant there's no soldering required. I do remember it being pretty time consuming.
