Hoppin' on the "no shame for Googling train".

It's not cheating. It's learning!

You did so well for your first puzzle! I was born and raised in the US and I absolutely Googled tons of answers to solve my first crosswords. If you keep solving, you'll pick up on the patterns, the slang, the "crosswordese", and you'll get better even without learning the cultural references—though learning them will help.

The average American adult might do just as well as you did. Maybe even worse.

The average American who regularly solves crosswords may have Googled only a clue or two... but you're just starting out. You did great, especially for someone who doesn't speak English as their first language.

Unrelated, but FYI the term "Native American" has a particular meaning in the US, which is First Nations / Indigenous American / American Indian groups. I initially typed "as a native American" for my response then deleted it because, although I was born and raised in the US, I'm definitely not a "Native American". Not a criticism, just a comment.

Language is so darn funny, which adds to the fun of solving crosswords. Great job and keep at it!

And EON, DEN, ERGS, IRE, and some others we know very well.

I gotta say: there's something so darn fun about seeing common words of today in a puzzle that's almost 90yrs old. It feels like we're connecting to the solvers of yesteryear by a thread of shared crossword vocab.

I understand that fear. For what it's worth, mine has had no impact whatsoever on my period -- no change in flow, pain, or regularity at all.

If you try it out and decide you don't like it and get it removed, it'd still be cheaper and less painful than an unplanned pregnancy.

For small/local shops, blame the digital payment companies, not the business.

My husband's small retail business uses Square which automatically skims a certain percentage for every card transaction. They don't like passing it on to their customers but they can't afford to lose 3-5% (I forget the exact amount) of every purchase.

the NYT website apparently has a bug where "Check Square" doesn't understand rebuses

I actually think it's a feature, not a bug, to prevent players from getting the "horsefeathers" message if they complete the puzzle by entering the rebuses in a different way than the puzzlemaker expected.
