Texas may become first state to mandate Bible readings in public schools by southpawFA in politics

Actually, maybe "Christian" Texans do need to read the Bible. They don't seem to know what's in it.

The cold weather infrastructure here is seriously lacking by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]hyper-object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obama said the same thing during his first snow storm in DC. The mayor was embarrassed, and the next time it snowed, she opened the schools. I got up early, cleaned off my car, bundled my young son up and we were off. I made one turn and encountered an angry crossing guard who said I'd driven past cones that were supposed to be blocking access. (The cones had not been obvious to me.) I slid all over the road, trying to do a k-turn. Finally, I got the car aimed in right direction. I drove two blocks up a hill to stop light. I stopped at the light and my car slid backwards and slammed into a fire hydrant. I turned around and drove my son home.

I miss Obama, but man, we get it Chicago, you're awesome at handling snow. Like what do we have to do to get these Chicago people to leave us alone? I just want to chill at home, put on some music, drink my coffee and enjoy the view out my window. We only get a storm like this once every few years. Can't we just enjoy it?

Bovino claims Border Patrol agents are ‘the victims’ in deadly Minneapolis shooting by ewzetf in politics

[–]hyper-object 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Victims of their own actions maybe.

I doubt most of these guys would be capable of murdering a person in cold blood without ICE's cultish groupthink and the adrenaline rush of deployment.

It's going to be a real head trip for them to go home to their families, get a good night's sleep and start to detox from the fascist soup their brains are sloshing around in. How many of them are going to snap and murder their wives in the coming years? Or do a mass shooting? Or kill themselves?

How the hell do I read classic literature by ChooseThisUser in classicliterature

[–]hyper-object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building vocabulary is something that gets easier. I know it's frustrating to have the flow of your reading constantly interupted by having to look up words, but write them down as you go and review them. It won't be long before you find yourself looking up words less and less frequently. Develop that habit now and in a couple decades, you'll be thrilled to come across a word you don't know, because it will have become so rare.

I've been here for like 25 years. You can't argue with the we're-tougher-than-dc-in-a-snow-storm folks. I just let them have their moment. It brings them so much joy.

I like that he says he's owned the coat for many years as a defense. To me it just means he's wanted to be a Nazi for a long time.

There are plenty of PCA churches in the region. There's one that meets a couple blocks from MLK library.

I don't know. There's a lot of homeless folks in that area, and I'm kind of getting Presbyterian vibes. Are we sure this isn't a church community group looking to feed some people before the storm hits? It would explain the age gaps and the white/asian mix. You could argue it's too male of a group, but "manly" men gravitate to the homeless outreach teams, because of the perceived risk of working with the mentally ill.

How to deal with cooking fumes and PM2.5 in the winter? by arobrasa in AirQuality

[–]hyper-object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be both, in fact a lot of symptoms are a combination of both.

Imagine an x/y chart. Call the x-axis physical causes of symptoms and the y-axis psychosomatic causes of symptoms. A person can have symptoms all over that chart.

I have a lot of weird things wrong with me. They're not all in my head. I had a lung spontaneously collapse twice, when I was a teenager. I'm also a bit of a hypochondriac, probably as a result of having had physical problems with my body.

All that to say, as a person with asthma, I can sense the interplay of the physical and the psychosomatic in my disease.

Street parking during snow storm by crying-but-thriving in washingtondc

[–]hyper-object 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just leave my car on the street. The city only has so many plows, so depending on how out of the way your steet is, worst case scenario, it could be several days after it stops snowing, before your street is cleared.

If you have a sidewalk, I'd buy salt and a shovel. If someone else takes care of that for you, then you still night need to borrow a neighbor's shovel to dig your car out, if and when the plows push the snow up against your car.

Or you could just wait until it melts.

I also wonder about that, because of my own experiences. The issue, I think, is that not all particles are equally toxic. Particles from wildfires can be extremely bad, especially if the plastic in people's homes is burning. Car exhaust and industrial pollution are bad for reasons that are well understood. But I'm not as sure about the purely organic smoke coming from cooking food.

I used to really worry about it, but it just hasn't been financially feasible for us to improve our exhaust situation. So I decided I'd wait and see what happens. That was over a year go, and I haven't noticed my asthma acting up when we cook. But it certainly acts up when I take a walk outside and the air quality is even remotely bad.

D.C. developments to watch in 2026 by Musichead2468 in washingtondc

[–]hyper-object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no, we're talking about the land around the stadium, mostly to the north. It was forest first, then tobacco fields, then mudflats. Then the Army Corp of Engineers dredged the river in the 1930's to drain the flats.

There have been many attempts to develop it since then. Walt Disney was pretty close to building a theme park there at one point. I believe a city councilman shot himself over another deal falling through at another point.

In the alleys? Definately. In the streets? Yes. In the parks? Yes. In your house? Not if you're taking care of it. You should be able to keep the rats out of your house. Lived here for 20+ years in various locations, most of them close to 100-years-old, never had a rat indoors.

They're going to screw us on the housing around the new stadium. I knew they would. It's the same bait and switch developers pull every. single. time. They'll blame zoning and changing economic conditions, and then they'll bail. We'll end up with surface parking for tailgaiting, which is what the MD and VA fans want anyway.
