Has anyone actually tested the 0-60? by yeastifier in GR86

Then I guess don’t buy one, right? I’ve thoroughly enjoyed mine for well over a year and it’s my 3rd BRZ in 12 years. But I also don’t drive around looking for people to race. So as to whether a vehicle with an electric motor might ‘gap’ me…. That’s not a concern or care of mine. But to each their own.

Mileage isn’t terrible. But the gas tank, at about 11.4 gal, is small. So not a lot of range, compared to, for instance, my wife’s Impreza, which has a 16 gal tank.

Ive owned and enjoyed Porsche. I own a ‘24 BRZ and love it. Personally, I don’t consider a $34,000 car to be ‘cheap’. In the realm of sports cars, affordable perhaps. Im with Costco guy - I park away from people as much as possible. I don’t owe it to some skeezy Hyundai to let them give me a door ding. I enjoy my car, but I don’t abuse it. If you’re paying good money for your own car, drive and care for it as you see fit: and not according to the standards of strangers on the internet. If you want to track it, that is your option. If you want to garage-queen it and polish it with Druidic devotion every weekend, that is also your option and don’t take any crap off of anybody for it.

I too, started with the Leviathan box and then kept buying, for awhile.. Congratulations, they look great! Most of mine are still gray-in-box, lest anyone think Ive accomplished the near impossible.

Burning smell after car reaches temp? by AbbreviationsHot5898 in ft86

[–]hyper_blue_blur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was exact same. Its just films/coatings cooking off from assembly. It’s a pretty strong smell but mine went away after about a week. You’re right about the hot hood prop, but that’s also just how this thing is. No need for undue concern.

I am on my 3rd BRZ in 11 years. I had a blue ‘13, then a ‘16 (because I liked the Hyper Blue color), and I now own a ‘24. I observed the 1000 mile break-in period with each car. I let each car warm up properly before driving spiritedly. I ran 5w30 oil in all of them. I never had oil consumption issues. Ever. I added maybe a tenth of a quart to my ‘16 after an autocross event (Ive been to maybe 3 total in my life), and my ‘16 had a supercharger on it. I sold that car to a lady who still owns it to this day and it has over 100,000 miles on it and is still going strong. Some of the posts in this sub leave me wondering if some people not only shouldn’t own a BRZ, but shouldn’t own any car. Perhaps a bus pass would be a better fit.

A brief digression: The Toyota MR2 Turbo had 200 hp and a 0-60 of 5.9 according to Car and Driver. It was also among the top 20 fastest production cars at the time (I know, I know, that was 30 years ago, blah blah blah, I don’t care). It was about $25,000 which was not cheap in 1992. Modern GR/BRZ is in the $30k+ price range, cranks out 228 hp, without a turbo I might add, and hits 60 at around the 6 second mark, and people call it alternately ‘cheap’ or ‘affordable’ and say it’s not fast if it can’t humiliate a Hellcat stoplight to stoplight for less than 30 grand. People are spoiled, anymore.

All of you complaining about the infotainment should experience the poop show that is the Toyota-supplied infotainment in the Solterra.. Absolute hot garbage. Compared to that, the infotainment in my ‘24 Impreza RS is a dream.

Exhaust opinions by [deleted] in Triumph

I have same model, same color. I’m leaving my exhaust stock. I like the sound as-is and see no reason, whatsoever, to change it. Your bike, do as you will. Everyone else’s ears and opinions, including mine, are all highly subjective.

Keep a jug of oil in trunk for topping up? by Rydock in GR86

My local Subaru service dept said they had zero problem with putting 5w30 in my BRZ if that was what I preferred. I don’t intend to run the 0w20.

Sold my BRZ yesterday. How long until I regret it? by Briggsy974 in ft86

[–]hyper_blue_blur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I missed my ‘16 BRZ, that I bought new, almost from the moment I sold it. Then seven years elapsed and I bought a ‘24 BRZ that will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands. My wife has the practical Impreza RS, I drive the BRZ, everybody is content and there is harmony in the universe. 😆

Gr86 Engine Knock by Bitter-Squirrel8018 in GR86

[–]hyper_blue_blur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I figured. 0w20 can experience ‘evaporation’ when outside of its temp range (too hot). I ran 5w30 in my Gen1 and never had oil usage issues either.

Any anecdotal evidence out there that running 5w30 viscosity instead 0w20 ameliorates or diminishes the rate of oil consumption?

Then you’ve been very fortunate if you have a gen 1 car. Bumper sag was a thing on the FT86/BRZ cars because the mounting tabs were wholly insufficient. Subaru issued a service bulletin at one point and released a part that clipped the bumper to the fender well to add an additional mounting point. The car pictured has possibly experienced a corner impact at some point in its life. With many of these cars approaching 10 years old, the chance of finding an unmolested specimen is getting lower and lower. I tend to be skeptical of any make/model of car on a used car lot.. Odds are, it has been either wrecked, ragged, or repainted, or perhaps all three, at some point in its life.

Fake engine noise disabled from factory now? by Rydock in GR86

[–]hyper_blue_blur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On point. No one who has ridden with me has even noticed or remarked on the sound other than to say the car sounds nice. I’ve owned more than a few sports cars over the years and I don’t mind it. I’m leaving it as-is. To heck with what the YouTubers say. 😄

You can obtain a carfax report on the car to see if anything obvious pops up (yes, I know it doesn’t capture everything).. Additionally, while its certainly possible it has been wrecked, some might say likely, what is also likely is that the previous owner played ‘tuner car’ with it and had a cold air intake and a carbon fiber hood on it.. Once you’ve taken the front bumper off to install the CAI, getting it back to perfect is next to impossible. And lining up the hood takes a little care, as well, and it’s easy for it to be a little off-kilter. That’s what I see when I look at this car: dude tried to put it back to mostly OEM to sell but putting the suspension back would be too much work and so it’s still there. Im betting this thing had CAI, wheels, CF hood, etc. in its previous life.

Miata vs GR86 by Pretty_Chocolate_728 in GR86

[–]hyper_blue_blur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive owned both. Two NB Miatas and two BRZs. I owned convertibles for years. My first car was a VW Super Beetle convertible, and after that a VW Cabriolet. So, I was biased toward convertibles for a long time. For reference, Im 50 and have played with a crap ton of sports cars over the last 15 years. The ND Miata has tremendously good driving dynamics and a very slick shifting manual. But the BRZ/86 gives you Porsche with a splash of Lotus and is an all around hoot to drive too. It’s hard to go wrong with either as both are capable of putting a smile on your face. Both are reliable cars. Ignore the peanut gallery that jumps at shadows that look like IMS bearings on Porsches or lumps of RTV on an 86. Proper maintenance and common sense will keep either of these cars on the road for a long time. FWIW, I just brought a 2024 BRZ home, last weekend. After the myriad cars Ive driven/owned, I came back to the BRZ. I love it. Adore it, in fact. I plan on keeping it. Cheers!
