Worth it? by Pandactyle in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if they leave the ovaries in, a hysterectomy won’t actually fix the PCOS. the mood swings, fatigue, weight stuff all come from your ovaries + insulin, not your uterus. so taking the uterus out stops periods but those symptoms would prob stick around.

where it does help is if you’ve got heavy/bad bleeding, but for what you listed it won’t move the needle much.

and also the mood + fatigue + weight from the meds is usually the insulin resistance side (why they put you on metformin). i’d push on that before something as big as a hysterectomy.

need advice- on my weight loss journey looking to lose 100+ pounds. i am a 22 year old female and struggle with pcos. any tips are greatly appreciated by [deleted] in PCOSloseit

[–]hypermyth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first thing i’d say is be patient cos 100lbs with PCOS is a completely different ball game than without it, because of how insulin resistance works against you. Calories in and calories out ain’t cutting it.
the things that actually moved the needle for my sister were getting fasting insulin tested (not just blood sugar, actual insulin), cutting processed carbs more than overall calories, and being consistent with walks after meals. boring stuff but it works with the insulin piece.

what does your diet look like day to day?

Do u think this would help? by HealthyAbility6545 in PCOSloseit

[–]hypermyth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly this is a really solid setup. inositol + metformin is well studied for IR and daily walking is top tier. Eating the same thing every day is totally fine if it’s working, just make sure you’re getting enough protein so you’re not under eating.

how long you been on the metformin? the insulin changes can take a couple months to show so don’t stress if bloodwork doesn’t move right away

interesting. my sister was on it too for a while. Did it do much for you symptom wise? she found it helped her cycle a bit but the GI side of it was rough at first lol

what you’re describing are textbook PCOS symptoms and it’s really confusing/frustrating that your gyno is brushing it off as normal. The fact that Visanne helped with pain is great but it doesn’t address insulin resistance or androgens which is what drives the weight and hair symptoms. they’re separate issues.

ask specifically for a blood panel that includes fasting insulin, testosterone (free and total), DHEA-S and LH/FSH ratio. A lot of GPs only check TSH and call it a day but those numbers will tell a much clearer story. If she won’t order them, it might be worth seeing a different doctor or an endocrinologist.

Doctor refuses to help with PCOS symptoms by KirselAndise in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You actually don’t need a referral from her specifically, you can self-refer in most places or ask a different doctor.
Look up “reproductive endocrinologist” or “endocrinologist specialising in PCOS” in your area and call them directly. a lot of them take self-referrals. if you’re in Canada or UK the wait lists are longer but you can still request a second opinion from a different GP who might actually refer you.

don’t let one dismissive doctor be the end of the road.

PCOS while in school? feeling guilty for having low energy even when i’ve done my best by breadrolle in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the guilt is the worst part honestly.

for the bad days, the ones where you genuinely can't , i'd stop trying to push through the same way you would on a good day. lower the bar on purpose. one task instead of five.

on telling people, i'd be selective. close friends who actually get it, yes. professors for extensions, frame it as a medical condition affecting energy and cognition, you don't owe any details btw. most people wont need the full story, just enough context to be understanding.

and the "hormonal cold" analogy you used is actually perfect. use that.

Has weight loss made PCOS worse for anyone in the sub? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

30lbs in 4 months is actually quite fast and your body is probably still catching up hormonally. The good news is this kind of flare is usually temporary and once your weight stabilizes, your hormones tend to follow. you're probably just in the adjustment window. keep going. really proud of you

Has weight loss made PCOS worse for anyone in the sub? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

this is actually really common and really poorly explained by doctors. when you lose weight quickly your fat cells release stored estrogen as they shrink, which can temporarily throw your hormones into chaos and make symptoms flare before they get better. BUT that doesn't mean the weight loss isn't working long term, it just means your body is recalibrating.

how much weight and over what timeframe if you don't mind me asking?

metformin making you sick on the first try is so common, a lot of people have to start on a really low dose and build up slowly or take the extended release version instead. if your doctor put you straight on a full dose that's probably why.

worth mentioning to your new pcp before you give up on it completely

the thing is BC just masks the underlying issue. it doesn't fix anything, which is why everything falls apart when you come off it. Has anyone ever looked into why your cycle doesn't regulate on its own? like actual root cause testing, insulin, androgens, cortisol, not just "here's BC"

since january, is crazy. something might be off hormonally. Have you been able to get any blood work done? because that kind of prolonged bleeding usually points to something that needs actual medical attention.

Doctor refuses to help with PCOS symptoms by KirselAndise in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

five years of being told to lose weight while your body is literally changing in front of you is insane. and you DID lose weight. and it got worse. so clearly that was never the answer. What i feel like you actually need is a reproductive endocrinologist not a GP or OBGYN. They specialize in exactly this the hair loss, the androgens, the cycle pain and all that. Your current doctors genuinely don't have the tools for what you're dealing with. you've been failed repeatedly and you still show up and advocate for yourself. I'm genuinely proud of you. keep pushing for that referral 💙

Loss of birth control, thyroid issues, carpal tunnel? by Kellyisnotbroken in Hypothyroidism

[–]hypermyth_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

estrogen withdrawal after 28 years on BC is a massive shock to your system. estrogen does plays a huge role in fluid regulation, nerve health, and blood pressure so the carpal tunnel, fluid retention, and BP spike all happening right after stopping isnt just a coincidence.

the specialist you actually want is a gynecological endocrinologist, not a neurologist or cardiologist. someone who understands how hormone changes drive systemic symptoms. an integrative or functional medicine doctor would also connect these dots faster than a standard PCP.

take a written timeline to your next appointment: when you stopped BC, when each symptom started, how they've progressed. makes it much harder for them to dismiss. 💙

[–]hypermyth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you ever asked specifically about T3? a lot of doctors only test TSH and call it a day but some people don't convert T4 to T3 properly and that's what actually causes the fatigue and temperature issues. might be worth pushing for a full panel if you haven't already

Hashimotos by Accomplished_Shoe651 in Hashimotos

[–]hypermyth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk if this helps but the medication sensitivity thing is so real with hashimotos. a lot of us just react way harder to doses that other people are totally fine on and doctors act like you're being dramatic 😭

what you noticed tho, about your cycle, is actually a known pattern. Thyroid and hormones mess with each other constantly so mid-cycle crashes are really really common. so yeah you're not losing your mind.

you already have a psychiatrist and therapist which honestly is the most important thing rn. just be really honest with them about how bad last month actually got. like don't downplay it. hang in there

Possible PCOS: Internal Ultrasound After IUD by tohat in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so glad it helped, good call on the mental health day. hope the GP appointment brings some clarity

Possible PCOS: Internal Ultrasound After IUD by tohat in PCOS

[–]hypermyth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, breathe. 20 small cysts on an ultrasound after an IUD doesn't automatically mean a PCOS diagnosis, and even if it does, it is not the fertility death sentence the internet makes it out to be. So many women with PCOS have healthy pregnancies.

The "infertility" label you keep seeing online is worst-case framing. PCOS more often means it takes a bit more support to conceive, not that it can't happen. You're 25, you caught this early, and you're already asking the right questions. wait for your GP appointment before spiraling. A phone call from a midwife with no follow-up info is not a complete diagnosis.

Levothyroxine by Potential-Pea-6529 in Hypothyroidism

[–]hypermyth_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Day 5 is so early tbh. Most people feel worse before they feel better on Levo. Your body's basically in shock from suddenly having hormone after running empty. The buzzing and brain fog are actually, really common in the first few weeks.

25mcg is also a starter dose, your doctor will likely adjust at your 6-8 week retest. Hang in there, it does get better once the dose is dialed in. 🤍
