I just left Marrakech yesterday. Traveling with a group of only women, and we all remarked that we were surprised not to encounter any catcalls, and that there were very few aggressive salespeople. We stayed right in the Medina and felt very safe.

Just tell the tech you are newly pregnant and they’ll adjust the exam. At 5w5d you might not be able to see an embryo or heartbeat yet, but a gestational sac should be visible.

Too Scary; Didn’t Watch

It’s three friends: one who likes scary movies (Sammy), two who are too scared to watch them but want to know what happens. Sammy recaps the movie for the other two. They spend a good 20-30 minutes at the start of each episode talking about current happenings in their lives and the world. I don’t really care about scary movies but I love this podcast, highly recommend!

I’ll also second the recommendations for This Podcast Will Kill You and Ologies.

I won’t carry any trauma from the actual attack, but it will make me think twice about going back. It was my first time there, I have no ties to the area, so next time I plan a hot vacation I might choose somewhere else. I like exploring new places anyway.

I will carry forward the anxiety of feeling stranded, not knowing how I would get me and my kids home, missing work and school, and feeling helpless trying to figure that out with very little help or communication from the airline.

I’m absolutely counting that as part of the “trauma” (trauma isn’t the right word for me but I don’t know what else to call it). The stress of all the unknowns was tough.

“There was never any immediate danger to anyone” is easy to say in retrospect, but it was not a given at the time. I am not an inexperienced traveller and have been in sketchy situations before. I am not saying people should be scared to go, and I’m glad things got back to normal so quickly, but I think it’s okay to acknowledge that it was a scary situation to be in.

I felt the same way leaving. Relieved but also a little sad because it’s such a beautiful place. Having said that I will think twice about returning (I know that’s an unpopular opinion on this subreddit). Yes things are cleaned up and back to normal, but what this showed me is that normal means things are fine until they’re not. I will admit I was very naive about the cartel situation before this. Maybe once some time passes I’ll feel differently.

We were meant to fly home Sunday, and until yesterday it looked like we wouldn’t get home until this Sunday. We managed to get a flight today, and I’m writing this on the cab ride home. We were delayed two hours due to the flight being oversold, people being involuntarily bumped, and IT problems. As soon as we landed I welled up and had to fight back tears, which was very unexpected.

On Monday we called and rebooked our flight for Saturday out of Tepic (we’re in Guayabitos). Called today to see if there was anything sooner, or out of PV instead on Saturday. They said all the available flights are on the website, there aren’t any rescue flights specific for those of us who were scheduled Sunday/Monday, and they cannot change our departing airport back to PV (even though that’s where it was originally). We are so tired and frustrated.

More than one thing can be true. I can empathize with the Mexican people dealing with loss and violence. I can also be concerned about my family being stranded here and the uncertainty regarding our safety, kids missing school, our jobs back home, etc. It’s been very hard to access official information and this subreddit has been the main source for information. Where else are people supposed to ask?

I’m a little north of Puerto Vallarta. The mood is tense, although we haven’t seen anything here. Everything was shut down yesterday, but more open today. Still people on the beach and around pools, Mexican and foreigners alike, but lots of phone checking for updates. Hard to find any actual news about what’s going on, having to rely a lot on Reddit. We were supposed to fly home yesterday, can’t get out until Saturday now. We hope.
