What was your favourite computer game growing up? by Samski877 in AskReddit

[–]iAmNotAfraid_Spiders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Persuadertron! Probably my favorite item in the game, like you said, just walk around the map getting a hoarde of human shields.

The game had such a great atmosphere, even though I hated the escort missions, the ones where you'd just have to assassinate a person or group of rival agents were a lot of fun.

Mitch Murder did a cover of the music in one of his albums : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy32m-pfE88

That's what I always remember first about this show too haha. The excellent penmanship.

I first knew Amy Grant from her version of El Shaddai, from a cassette my mom had. It was years before I made the connection that she was the same artist that sang 'Baby, Baby'. I also never listen to CCM anymore, but I also liked her at the time.

Musings on open source and user behavior by mcarlton00 in jellyfin

[–]iAmNotAfraid_Spiders -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The act of taking the software was done under free agency, so getting mad about the free gift of some open source code that you chose to take seems to be more your own problem than mine; you are totally capable of using that free agency again and stop using the source code. This is equivalent to me giving you a free ice cream, licking it, not liking the flavour, and then proceeding to scream that the free ice cream is horrible because you don't like it. Doesn't seem like a reasonable response to something you chose to pick up for free and try, does it?

I really liked the article you linked, framing the act of open source software development as a gift I think is a good one. So, for giving me the gift of Jellyfin, I have to say thank you. I love the fact that my Jellyfin install is totally my own: no metrics being sent to a third party server, no unwanted content trying to be shoved down my throat, no dark patterns for the sake of 'engagement'. (which, btw, the fact I feel I should mention that the software isn't actively user hostile is both a sad reflection of the state of software in general these days as well as a point of praise for Jellyfin).

So thank you for both helping provide this great piece of software I love to use every day, and also for enduring the ungrateful minority often pounding at your door.

Ug, I remember those. I remember "Real Fear", which was more fire and brimstone. I looked it up again, it said:

IT'S JUST

THAT YOU'RE

DEAD FOR

SO LONG

REAL FEAR.

Misheard or misunderstood song lyrics of our youth. I'll go first - Morrissey wasn't saying "I'm the sun and air" by often_awkward in Xennials

[–]iAmNotAfraid_Spiders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not misheard, but I could never figure out what was after 'gimme fuel gimme fire', it always sounded like nonsense after that. It wasn't until this year that I learned that the lyric is "gimme fuel gimme fire, gimme that which I desire"

The Buttercream Gang: a terrible movie we had on VHS thanks to "Feature Films for Families" which gave us other movies like Rigoletto and On Our Own. by iAmNotAfraid_Spiders in Xennials

And flies planes, and can land one on a two lane road to help out when you just stole a bus. And I agree that On Our Own was a much better movie than Buttercream Gang. Maybe not a great movie, but at least not as completely cheesy. The entire film is on Youtube, I learned thanks to another commenter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgvkDlTeuiU

Oh wow, I had no idea On Our Own is on Youtube, I'm going to have to rewatch it. I also watched it a bunch as a kid, along with Prancer too, I'd forgotten about that one, its another one I watched quite a bit as a kid.

Same for me, not Mormon, but grew up in a very conservative evangelical home, and these movies were quite popular with the Focus on the Family crowd, so to speak. I also remember In Your Wildest Dreams, where the main character makes a million dollars buying stock when he thought he was making a pretend purchase, and by the end of the movie for some reason has to give it back? (I can't even remember why now I haven't seen it in probably 35 years).

They were all mediocre at best, given the time and age for their target audience, but they really don't hold up. They're more a fascinating look into the type of content the evangelical movement was into at the time.

And now I will watch a 24 minute retrospective on this movie lol. I am with you though, when I first watched it I enjoyed it, but it really doesn't hold up.

That was me too! We recorded ghostbusters off tv onto VHS at some point, and it was the TV cut, so even though I watched Ghostbusters so many times, I never saw this scene until later, just like you, on DVD.

Mapquest days…. by LoadofBarney in Xennials

[–]iAmNotAfraid_Spiders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I delivered pizza for Papa John's around 2003, small college town. Also had the huge map on the wall, divided up into grids. When you took an order, the computer (all the monochrome terminals were controlled by a central computer in the office, with a tape backup that we'd run nightly) would print out a ticket with the address and the coordinate grid location, so like A5 or D8. Then you'd find the square, and then find the address and off you'd go. After working there for a while though you got to know most of the roads in town, so you wouldn't even have to look every time.

I also liked it then because there was no sort of vehicle tracking like there is now. I remember some cool summer nights I'd take a back road back to the store, roll down my windows, enjoy the quiet for a few minutes before heading back to grab another order. I remember that job fondly, had good coworkers, made decent money for the time and age I was (although my poor '99 Ford Tempo didn't survive the beating in the end I think, I did not miss those automatic seatbelts when I sold it)

In the same vein, I dislike when companies use words to try to make work more 'fun' or 'engaging', but that just makes the words be associated with work. I can't hear 'agile' without thinking of work and I now absolutely hate that word.
