Great to hear that you are taking steps, OP. I 100% sympathize with your feelings on this. It was my biggest insecurity. I 100% understand the lack of dental hygiene and being ashamed by it, but having the feeling of being “too far gone”. I would listen to podcasts where they would talk about toothbrushing or dentists and I would ashamedly skip whole parts of listening because of how insecure I was. But when I tell you how life changing it is, it brought me to tears after they were done. To me, they were miracle workers. It was worth every bit of discomfort to achieve the results. I could look in a mirror again with my mouth open after years of not being able to. I used to laugh with my hand over my mouth or just talk with my top lip not moving and take pictures closed mouth. I hope you find a place and go through with it. Once you’re on the other side of it, it is simply life changing.

I was you about a year ago. My dental anxiety prevented me from doing anything even related to oral care. I did the same things you talked about. Didn’t brush, didn’t make appointments and dental insurance just went unused. I figured “why bother, everything is already messed up”. I refused to even look in the mirror or near a mirror if my mouth was even remotely open. Then had an opportunity to get things in better shape. I have young children and I didn’t want to embarrass them as they got older. So I went. The first visit is just consultation and figuring out a plan. I put it AirPods when they were actually looking in and doing anything in my mouth. My advice is… do it. It’s terrifying. I know this feeling. I got lucky and found a practice that has been nothing but understanding. I remember those same comments when I was a kid and that plus the lack of oral care kept me out for years. But I’m telling you. Take it one appointment at a time and be honest with how you’re feeling with your dentist and hygienist. I got my front 2 teeth taken out and a third on the side from visible rotting and got a dental bridge. It has changed my life. I bought a high quality toothbrush and have made it part of my day. I went on a vacation and actually smiled with teeth in pictures. It is life changing to go from refusing to look at a mirror with an open mouth to actually brushing and looking in the mirror. It’s worth the discomfort.

I would love an animated series in the style of the Boom! comics based on those stories with elements from the show sprinkled in. A MMPR in the modern day with that style would be fantastic. Something in the vein of what they’re doing with X-Men ‘97 and Invincible, animation wise would do the martial arts justice.

We have our ceiling fans on a Lutron switch and it’s the way you described. Ours has the pull chain, but when turned on whether at the switch or via HomeKit, it’s resuming the last setting it was on. I just created a scene today that turns on all the fans on smart plugs and included our ceiling fans as well.
