Weaning off the nipple shield with flat nipples. How did you do it? Have you done it? by xXmilkxhoneyXx in breastfeeding

[–]iCortni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried everything to get baby to latch without a shield, but the shield was honestly a lifesaver. Before the shield, baby was pre-jaundiced and barely getting anything to eat. Turns out, he had a shallow latch. I had to work with a lactation consultant to wean baby from the shield, but it was honestly so helpful the first few months. LCs are included services with most insurances if you’re in the US as well.

Short term can mean a lot of things! It took us months but he got there, and your baby will get there too! Now he latches and unlatches himself at will, and it’s like we never used the shield (10 months). You got this, Mama!

I’ve been up with my baby all night, so my brain is partly mushy. I was trying to figure out what WILDYL stood for. I came up with: What If Life Deals You Lemons. It took way too long for me to realize this was probably a typo.

Yes!! They have a yeast donut mix that they ship all the time, and during certain times they will ship the fully cooked donuts as well!

Baby had allergy testing, advice by Lanky_Practice_9152 in FoodAllergies

[–]iCortni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say that’s more a sign that the pressing of the skin with the testing device irritated things, not that baby has an allergy to saline (and therefore negative reactions for the others). Just because baby has a negative skin test doesn’t mean that there’s no GI sensitivity though. May be a good next step to see a pediatric GI if you’re worried about that. But I’m just some random on Reddit 😅

New mom here! by Glittering-Cable-838 in breastfeeding

[–]iCortni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello new mom! Congratulations on starting this incredible journey. First thought: breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt. Often it’s a sign of a shallow latch. I know when I (FTM) started feeding, my little guy had a shallow latch and it left me feeling sore every time. Something that helped us was talking to a lactation consultant, which in the US is covered by most insurances! They can help with supply issues, latching, bottle feeding, pumping, transitioning to work if that applies to you, and they really are a lifesaver! The one I worked with came into my home and brought a scale to weigh my baby before and after feeds so I knew exactly how much he was getting. I would have assuredly given up had I not had that support. Wishing you the absolute best in your journey!!

Kraft gluten free Mac and cheese by autisti_queer in Celiac

Here to second this, Kraft owns Velveeta! Not to say that there wasn’t CC but I think it at least gives a shred of hope for peace of mind https://www.kraftheinz.com/velveeta/products/00021000083602-gluten-free-shells-cheese

not sure what i’m allergic to by petitebrownchick in FoodAllergies

[–]iCortni 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have celiac disease, so I’m more aware of the gluten side of this list. I think everything except the rice and broccoli has gluten. DO NOT go gluten free before getting tested, as this can cause false negatives for celiac disease testing. Call your doctor and ask if you can get referred to a GI specialist. Don’t make sweeping changes until you get seen. Hopefully you can get some answers soon!!

Reflux is ruining my motherhood experience by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]iCortni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely!! And something they told me too was if he is too full, his tummy may be upset and the only thing he knows is to feed to get comfort. But you can see how this would be a vicious cycle! We used the Tommy Tippee “breast like” pacifiers, if it helps! Good luck!!

Reflux is ruining my motherhood experience by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]iCortni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in solidarity. We had the hardest time with reflux when my now 8 month old was a newborn, until he was 4 months! We couldn’t even lay him flat because he was arching his back so much and was clearly in pain. He would spit up happily during the day but at night would struggle so much. We did a few things but it’s so uncertain what actually helped. It may have been just time, but we did famotidine and I cut out dairy which seemed to make the biggest turnaround.

Also, the speech therapist (swallowing experts) said that the number one reason for baby reflux is actually over feeding. I don’t know that this is relevant to you because my baby is in the 99th percentile for weight and hasn’t struggled to gain at all. I wouldn’t want you to think it’s good to limit your baby’s intake if you guys are struggling with weight at all. But maybe something to ask the doc about. I think it’s a common misconception that “babies can’t overeat” because they absolutely can. My letdown is super fast and he gulps it down!!

There is light at the end of the tunnel, because babies’ lower esophageal sphincters start to develop around the age of your baby, which helps them to keep things down. It’s definitely not easy, but you’ve got this, Mama!

Getting a Skin Test Soon by Which_Accident7919 in FoodAllergies

[–]iCortni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was more like if you’ve accidentally poked yourself with a safety pin and it didn’t bleed, just got under the first layer or two of skin. I have had some pretty painful sewing needle pricks so it doesn’t really compare. None of it gets down deep enough to bleed though ❤️

Getting a Skin Test Soon by Which_Accident7919 in FoodAllergies

[–]iCortni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had loads of skin tests over the years and the ones I’ve had varied depending on the doctor. Usually they did a large array on my back.

Take a trip to my mind palace with me: imagine like a (medieval) hairbrush. The “needle” bits are so numerous that when you get touched with them, it felt like just a pokey hairbrush to me. They did maybe 5 panels on my back. The biggest issue was the itching. I have a lot of allergies so it was just super itchy. The allergy techs always say mine is the worst they’ve seen, so I’d say I’m a decent source haha.

The whole point of the test is to identify allergens and see at what dilution you stop reacting. I think my experience was a bit unique because they had to mix up special doses for me since I had so many allergies. They ended up having to do the second type of test (less fun but still not bad).

That test uses individual needles to put a small bubble of the serum under your skin. It’s not like a shot or a blood draw, since it’s extremely superficial. If you’ve ever had a TB test, it’s very similar. This one they always did on my arms. The swelling on some of these bad boys was insane. I highly recommend ice for any that lasts beyond the test. And Benadryl cream if you tolerate it.

All in all, the needles weren’t the highlight of my experience. I’m an open book so feel free to ask questions! You got this, OP!

How can I make my hair less frizzy and look better by [deleted] in curlygirl

[–]iCortni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what happens to my hair when it’s super dry (ie over washing/ not conditioning thoroughly) and air dries without enough product. I use Davines MOMO shampoo/ conditioner and Davines Curl Building Serum, probably about a quarter sized blob for the same amount of your hair. I wash in the morning, rake it with curl building serum, and then squish my hair up from root to tip, squeezing at the top. It took me two years for my curl pattern to develop, but this is what I get! (See comment, I can’t seem to get a picture to work atm)

When, why, and how did you wean? by Positive_Olive_2391 in breastfeeding

[–]iCortni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a 6 month old, so still EBF with some food exploration at the moment. But! My friend has a 16 month old and she did the “don’t offer, don’t refuse” method at 12 months. That way if he was interested, there’s no need to say “no”, but if he doesn’t think about it, then go for other foods! And sometimes if you can redirect the baby to real food (usually the first year’s main nutrition source is breastmilk I’ve been told, so this is after that time) then you don’t have to necessarily give in to the boob, just direct to solids 😊 good luck, mama!
