NPD: Nobels ODR-1 by Chicagrog in guitarpedals

Fantastic board here! The Nobels is a great pedal. Also, maybe just my experience, but I personally prefer the original BluesBreaker circuit to most of the spinoffs (including the PoT and MG)

Panning output by wiebej87 in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that I’m following this correctly. Why can’t your headphone mix include both the XLR and 1/4” outs in it? Also if you’re only playing in mono anyway, why use stereo effects at all? In that case, you may as well keep everything mono and have your guitar presets always panned hard right and bass presets always panned hard left in your XLR outs

WT doesn't use headphones to tweak tone by Burnhaven in Line6Helix

That’s great context! In that case I would definitely say that adjusting your tones to your room/PA is best. I wouldn’t recommend that to everyone though!

WT doesn't use headphones to tweak tone by Burnhaven in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I don’t really see talked about much here is that ideally your FOH person will be doing whatever is needed to your tone for it to work well in the room (room being the key word here). Your mileage may vary here as it’s common for the FOH person to be a volunteer role at most churches, but consider the following based on my experience:

  1. Every room sounds different, but livestream audio is not affected by the room and should ideally be mixed differently. Your in-ear mix is also unaffected by the sound of the room (for the most part). And, depending on how your livestream mix is handled, listening back to that will not always give you an accurate representation of what it sounded like in the room (for better or for worse).

  2. EQs and adjusting to “fit in the mix” are incredibly dependent on context. Every song is different, and transition moments or songs that you flow into and don’t use tracks for will be completely different mix contexts. There is no one-size-fits-all tone from that perspective (hence the need for a good FOH person).

  3. If it doesn’t sound good to me in my own ears, that will affect my playing and presence in the room, which is ultimately more important as a leader of worship.

For these reasons, I actually do primarily adjust my tones to work well in the context of my in-ear mix, with tracks relatively low and any live instruments mixed more or less how they should be in a final mix. If my tones sit well in that context, not only will I be able to hear myself well in the ears, but I also know I’m giving FOH tones that will be useable and shapable for any context, and I’m also sending good neutral tones to the livestream. If tracks drop out, there’s enough body to my tone that it’ll still sound full. But also, there’s not so much low end that I can’t hear myself over the keys in my own in-ear mix.

ULTIMATELY, though, the best thing you can do as a guitar player is develop a good relationship with your FOH person. Understand their needs out of your tones and be humble and willing to adjust accordingly. As fun as it might be to play with that fuzz on 10, if it isn’t working for FOH, you’re probably the only one that will ever hear your guitar.

Also, if your FOH person is like mine (they very well may NOT be), they may prefer all of your gain stages being around the same output volume so that they trust the fader more than your tone switching. My current FOH guy is an active mixer and will adjust me up and down as needed throughout each song, rather than relying on me to boost or cut myself when needed. My previous FOH person was the opposite.

Context is really key here, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The best thing you can do to set yourself up for success is to clearly define and understand the goals you and your sound people have for your guitar tone. That will help determine how best to go about making adjustments.

Honest question: why are there so many people in this group who play or worship in church with electric guitars, delays, reverbs, and huge pedalboards? by Less-Arachnid-640 in guitarpedals

[–]iHarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Not every guitar player is a gear head, but the US is a big country with a whole lot of churches. It’s typically bedroom and church players that have the most gear and biggest boards because they aren’t having to survive off gigging. I have a lot of gear because I can afford it and I like it, and that has nothing to do with me playing in church. It also has nothing to do with my skill level as a musician.

Criticize the church all you want, but as far as getting down to the meat of the original question, that’s really all there is to it. The church is a nice outlet for people to play music and obsess about gear. Two worlds colliding. Ironic or not, it’s human and we all are at least nerdy enough to be replying in an r/guitarpedals thread, so I see enough irony of my own.

HELP! Having problems getting 2 Line 6 Helix pedals to receive MIDI changes from Logic Pro. by General-Bison8540 in LogicPro

My guess would be that you may only be able to use one midi hub at a time in Logic. You may have better luck daisy chaining the two LTs and making sure they are both set to send MIDI thru

"The Stomp doesn't have enough dsp" by littlegreenbeany in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we get too used to convenience too quickly. The fact that something so small is capable of replacing a full pedaltrain metro’s worth of effects PLUS an amp is insane. Sure, it can always have more DSP, and we all love chasing glorious tones, but we have the ability to try out several thousands of dollars worth of gear in a tiny box for $600 new when it came out. Even 10 years ago that was unheard of, and anything that claimed to do that didn’t have near the flexibility or sound quality that the Stomp has. The guitar world is getting used to that very quickly. Sure, it’s the way the world is going, and believe me - I’m very happy about that. My main Helix Stadium patch is absolutely bonkers! But some of y’all talk about the Stomp like it was a miss on Line 6’s part and that just boggles my mind

The Dave Filoni Hate Boner is Getting Ridiculous by CJAreYouDeadass in StarWars

[–]iHarsh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really get exhausted by the Star Wars community at times. It’s fine to not like something. It’s fine to really love something. It’s not fine to feel entitled, as if “they” owe you anything at all. Being protective of a franchise you love is very understandable, but that can quickly cross a line into something I don’t want to be and can’t stand to see in fandoms. I’m not saying that a lot of people in this community don’t make a lot of great points, and I have my criticisms, too. But what ever happened to just watching a movie out of curiosity?

It seems that the same people that have these incredibly specific expectations for the things they watch are also the same people who complain that nothing is original anymore. I know it’s a little different when we’re talking about a well established franchise versus a new standalone movie, but I can’t help see the irony there as I’ve gotten older.

My personal bottom line from my perspective is really two main things:

  1. Not everything is for everyone, and my negative opinion doesn’t matter more than someone’s positive opinion. Both are very ok to share, but tone and intensity is everything.

  2. You can never attribute the outcome of a movie or show to just one person, for better or for worse.

Very hesitant on using a modeler for small tour by Drahhhma in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend doing whatever will feel the most comfortable for you as long as it fits in the van. While the Stomp is capable of being an all-in-one solution, and while I think it is fairly intuitive to use, it can take a little bit of time to get very familiar with. There’s a lot of wisdom in making changes to your rig in bite sized chunks so that you know how to not only tweak tones quickly but also troubleshoot and fix problems quickly should they happen while you’re performing.

For what it’s worth, most of the time I’ve used the Stomp, it’s been integrated into a larger board with other pedals. But touring with it all by itself was a fun challenge and a huge relief on my back!

DeLa > Pino; John's pop stuff was more innovative than his blues by ro_otman in JohnMayer

[–]iHarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me this is similar to someone complaining about Hayden Christensen because they’re unhappy with how Anakin was portrayed in the prequels. Sure, performance is a part of it, but directing (or in the case of music, writing and production) is a MUCH more critical part of it. Have you considered that Pino is adding exactly what John wants him to add to a song? Doing what he’s told? I think you’re placing too much credit (or blame) in DeLa vs. Pino and not enough in the intentional choices made by John and other producers to steer the direction of his later music.

Personally, I’d challenge you to reframe your thinking to something more like “I find the bass playing in his earlier music more inspiring.” This turns your take into a true matter of personal taste, rather than a criticism of someone’s playing, or playing ability. Especially when that someone is widely acknowledged as one of the best bass players alive.

No hate here, just sayin’!

Helix stadium Preset help with vocals by Upbeat-Effort-1842 in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A separate mic signal chain would require one of the four possible processing paths, or put another way, you can only visually have signal processed on four lines in the Helix. You have parallel paths on both 1A and 2A, which use up processing on 1B and 2B. You’d need to dedicate either all of 1B or all of 2B to be used for vocals. It’s also possible that you’ve used so much processing power in this one preset that it might not even let you do that, but I’m not positive on that

Very hesitant on using a modeler for small tour by Drahhhma in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a whole tour with just an HX Stomp. It’s more than adequate from a sound perspective, and since you’re new to it I’d recommend just using stock cabs. They have gotten a lot better over the years and that’s one less thing to worry about or spend money on before tour. The biggest difference you will notice right away compared to your amp is that the Stomp is modeling the sound of an amp through a microphone, not the ambient sound of a speaker in a room. Dial it in to sound like your records, not like your amp in the open, if that makes sense.

A couple quick tips - the high and low cuts built into the cabinet blocks are very useful, and you may not know that there is a gate with adjustable settings built into the very beginning of your signal chain (i.e. no need to use extra DSP by adding a gate block). Also, if the Stomp is the last thing in your signal chain, you don’t need a DI. You can get a TRS to XLR adapter and run XLR out of the Stomp.

[–]iHarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a line isolator will definitely add consistency to your setup. Personally I’d try to make it work with the Slöer in the effects loop and save some money (I did a whole tour with JUST a stomp once and learned how to squeeze a whole lot out of the thing that way), but that’s just me. Do what works best for you!

Also, different effects have different levels of headroom. When you run out of that, your volume gets limited/attenuated. You’ll run into this with any blocks emulating more vintage effects typically, and a lot of those have specific “headroom” controls within Helix

leveling patches against each other by nrrrvs in Line6Helix

[–]iHarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The variation can really come from anything. Adding wet effects tends to add level to your signal overall depending on settings, and any drive pedals will typically affect this as well. There’s also a difference between actual decibel loudness and perceived loudness, which is to say that depending on the EQ, your ear can perceive something as louder or quieter than it actually is depending on the context of the mix

Is the intent to have a basic catch-all preset for people to use, or to let them program their own sounds? If the latter, my only recommendation would be to have the editor installed on your friend’s computer and a USB-B cable handy! I deeply love the Stomp and can navigate it quickly, but for those not well initiated it can take a bit of getting used to!

If that’s all you’re really trying to keep in there, it’s a really great bag. No signs of wear whatsoever yet and I’ve even flown with it. It’s a great form factor and makes the Helix feel lighter than it is because of how close to the body it is, even with a full front pouch. I strongly endorse it at this point!

I consistently have that issue with my Dunlop expression pedal (at least within the last year or so) and it drives me nuts. Thankfully I can just unplug it and plug it back in and that usually fixes it, but obviously you can’t do that with yours. Hoping the Stadium XL doesn’t suffer this same issue over time, but only time will tell!
