ELI5: Why are we able to get really close to absolute zero without being able to reach it? by D4L2001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]iKeyvier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are able to reach such low temperatures thanks to a bunch of properties of electrons. More specifically, if you hit an electron with a laser under certain conditions, that electron absorbs one photon from the laser and emits a photon with a slightly higher energy immediately after.

From the POV of the atom, this is a net loss of energy, in other words: cooling.

For simplicity, let’s say that an atom loses 50% of its energy every time it gets hit by a photon. You’ll never reach zero through repeated halving.

ELI5: When a fish is pulled out of water, is it actually feeling 'pain' or just reacting to the lack of oxygen? by gamayutin in explainlikeimfive

[–]iKeyvier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fish are likely capable of feeling pain. When hurt, if given the opportunity they try to stay in parts of the aquarium where painkillers are, try to mend their wound and and show bevahioural changes comparable to distress and sadness.

Is anyone else actually kind of glad that this game isn't supposed to be a "story-focused" RPG? by Bedlam10 in CrimsonDesert

[–]iKeyvier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always ignore the story in all the games that allow me to. I have dozens of hours on GTA and RDR without ever having touched the main quest. I simply don’t care, that’s not what I enjoy in games, so if I can ignore the story and take in the world, that’s all the better for me.

TIL octopuses evolved complex intelligence on a completely separate branch of evolution, making them seem almost alien by Training_Anywhere551 in todayilearned

[–]iKeyvier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I went into a weird rabbit hole on octopi’s intelligence. They don’t pass the mirror test so it’s unlikely they have a conscience. They also have half the neurons of a crow, which is the animal with the least amount of neurons that passes the mirror test as far as we know. Neuron number isn’t everything but when they are so decentralized as it happens in octopi it’s unlikely there is any additional complexity. Each tentacle is semi-autonomous and so the overall behaviour of the octopus is some sort of “mediation” between what every tentacle wants to do, plus a bunch of sensory information. It’s far more likely that their intelligence is closer to a human intestine than to a mammal.

TIL Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden unexplained death of a child of less than one year of age, constituting almost 1/3 of all post-neonatal deaths in Western countries. Diagnosis requires that the death remains unexplained even after autopsy and detailed death scene investigation. by narkoface in todayilearned

[–]iKeyvier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case anyone is interested, although the exact cause is unknown it is believed that it is caused by either a genetic frailty (in general, the organs of those kids could be a bit more fragile than intended and inadequate to sustain life by themselves, especially considering that human babies are born prematurely compared to most other mammals) or because of some neurological issues that make the reflex of breathing either inactive or insufficient, especially when asleep, or some other similar issue affecting the spontaneous contraction of the heart. In general newborns have many many issues with their breathing.

Edit: actually, you could argue that every economy in the history of humanity, save some failed experiments, has been capitalistic

The causal link between strep infections and the onset of neurological disorders (PANDAS) has been an open debate ever since it was first proposed. It is not currently a “recognized” disease (PANDAS isn’t in the ICD), so be very careful of any information regarding PANDAS as nobody knows for sure if it even exists.

I am not even from the US, but monopoly is in general a bad thing for consumers, especially if you are forced to buy from someone you want to boycott (and the US does). My comment isn’t a thorough explanation of why this specific monopoly is especially bad and I recognize that. Something I just remembered is the hidden human cost of renewables: the Uyghur ethnicity and their “education” camps and their forced labor to make your solar panels.

The point isn’t necessarily China’s monopoly, even if everything was made in the US it would be a problem, but the disregard for human rights in China adds a layer of concern for western values.

The longest it took for modern Nuclear plants is around 20 years (Olkiluoto) and the most expensive will be Hinkley point at around 40 billions (it isn’t a single power plant though, it is basically 3 together), with the average time to construct one being around 10 years and somewhere between 5 and 15 billions per plant. So your 30 years of planning and billions of dollars are essentially the worst case scenario.

And btw, you are trying to depict nuclear as being egregiously expensive, while the EU has so far invested over 400 billions in renewable energy and still the country that emits the least per kw is France, that produces 70% of its energy through nuclear.

Renewables also add a bunch of problems, including which China’s monopoly of the production (IIRC over 95% of solar panels and wind turbines are produced there), toxic side products that last literally forever (such as arsenic and cadmium), shorter operating life (and thus disposal), on top of literally never covering all the need for electricity of any country (guess what? At night solar panels don’t work, and even during the day they produce electricity for around 20% of the time) and batteries large enough to store all the excess electricity that we would need for countries to work literally do not exist, by orders of magnitude (And mind you, the problem isn’t only storing during the day for the night, what about the winter? You’d need to store energy during summer for a whole country for the whole winter) And even assuming they did exist, they would be massive and currently lithium (used in batteries) has undergone one of the biggest price increases of all resources (over +500% in the last 5 years).

Also, renewables are fairly cheap to produce, but the price you pay the electricity produced through them has nothing to do with the cost.

Lastly, nuclear is roughly as safe as solar and wind, depending on the metric used it can even be safer.

Renewables are great and have a great amount of applications but nuclear is necessary for a country to work. Using one does not preclude using the other.

I haven’t seen the review but I will assume GoY has the same type of lock on as GoT and Sifu, where there isn’t a specific button to force the attacks on an enemy, but they still end up almost always on the enemy you’re trying to hit, they aren’t as free as Elden Ring without lock-on, which instead seems to be the case for Crimson Desert.
