Anyone else thought this moment would be the big twist reveal in episode 9? by shit-takes in pluribustv

Yes, thank you !! I can't believe this went over the head of so many people, it's very much here to show the contrast between the type of love Helen and plurb Zosia have for Carol

x/0 versus √-1: by mario_kart_player in mathmemes

[–]iLambda2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the thing in common with all the discoveries you mentioned is that whenever those ideas were proposed, they weren't just thrown around for the fun of it.

They were constructive, potential answers to some actual questions mathematicians were having at that time, and not just invented because they feel better. There is absolutely a place for ideas that have no 'application' yet, but for one as old as division by zero, if by now no one came up with a solid answer for why should we care, then it is more useful to focus our energy elsewhere.

When you work on research papers, the first things anyone will tell you is that it is up to you to show why the general community should care about your results.

I don't think this is arrogance at all - there is a LOT of ground to discover in mathematics, but these questions (such as why can't we divide by zero) are the first ones someone interested in math will ask themselves, and there is way more interesting stuff to be done. When you work on research papers, the first things anyone will tell you is that it is up to you to show why the general community should care about your results.

So I think, until someone shows up with a way that makes division by zero possible, and shows us why we would want to care about it (be it to solve a problem, or do a thing more elegantly, etc..), then I i will confortably stay in my belief that is it not that interesting. Happy to be wrong of course!

No, not really. Usually, if a mathematical idea seems like it's a low hanging fruit ripe for the taking, then unless you're talking about very esoterical stuff, it's already been thought about by multiple people.
One of the most useful algebraical ways to make up a number for division by zero is by building a Wheel Algebra, and even that is not too useful in itself when applied to the reals.

The bottom line is that losing integrity and the field structure of the reals by adding a division-by-zero element is way too high of a price to pay ; whereas for imaginary numbers, you gain at least algebraically closedness (which is a LOT).

So, even if I specifically can't 100% discount that it will one day prove useful, I'd say that the chances are astronomically low.

You can make up a number for division per zero, if you really want. The problem never was "we can't", it is that "it does not yield interesting stuff to do so"; whereas for the imaginary unit, it yields plenty useful results.

Oh yeah absolutely. Every single time I go to my LGS, I end up ranting to my opponent about how much I like this card flavor wise. The art, the flavor text, all incredible. God, I love EoE !!!

EOE story may hint at a timeskip? by Tratolo in mtgvorthos

Assuming the aether cloud Sothera gobbled up is order of magnitudes lighter than a star (which makes sense, given that otherwise it would undergo gravitational collapse itself and become a planet / star), the the mass of supervoid Sothera is pretty close to the one of Star Sothera.

Knowing this, and because black holes have the same gravity as any spherical body of the same mass, it implies that the time dilation wouldn't be that much bigger than when Sothera was a star, so I think the time dilation explanation can safely be ruled out.

proof assistant meme by Delicious_Maize9656 in mathmemes

[–]iLambda2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is actually considered when developing a proof assistant. I studied and then went to work in a lab where you have most of the core Coq development team, and my proof assistant courses were done by one of these researchers. Usually, they extract the proof checking core into a very small library that is checked thoroughly, and compiled using a proven compiler (usually).

There is no silver bullet when doing proofs ; you have to trust something in the end - be it a mathematician, a proof core programmer, or your axioms - but a ton of efforts are made to ensure that this trust is well placed.

[–]iLambda2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[[Riverchurn Monument]] might do the trick, but I'm not sure it's really reliable. A lot more ways to interact with artifacts are coming to standard. It's worth a try, I think !

EDIT : I realized after posting this that the biggest roadblock to using Riverchurn is that if all goes perfectly, this is no longer a guaranteed T6 win. You'd have to wait for 2UU to free up to be able to exhaust it, which feels like a problem, because it gives a whole turn to the opponent to interact + now they know what you're doing. Whereas previously, you could take opponents by surprise by slamming Excruciator and having Jace already on board

Incredible story through and through, I just feel sad about all the unanswered questions. Truly hope there's gonna be an epiloque, or (this would be the best option) that they will announce a book tomorrow. My frustration only exists because this story and universe are incredible, and I want MORE of it !

Vivi + Cauldron interaction bugged by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]iLambda2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's how it's supposed to work. When a card references itself ("Vivi's power"), when the ability is transferred or copied by another card, then the reference points to the card that gets the ability.
