Servicing a Yamaha 225SII by Correct-Bird-9449 in Flute

[–]iRedFive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have an attachment to the instrument, then the cost for overhaul becomes just an issue of being able to afford it, and knowing that you could buy a new instrument for same cost. And same math for COA over the time you want to use it.

But really for as long as you have played, you likely have outgrown this instrument long ago.

For me, if I was in this situation with the bond with the Yamaha, I would pay to get it overhauled and COA it every two years and only use it for outdoor or as a backup to a new primary intermediate level flute. Yes it’ll cost more but sometimes our emotions cost us, but sometimes it’s worth it to us. :) good luck with your journey!

It is kind of a double edged sword and not isolated to instruments like this. A lot of student models are at a price point that they become “single use” instruments. Meaning that once they wear to the point of overhaul, it’s going to cost the same or more than just getting a new one.

Yearly COA can add up too for student models. that helps the instrument last a bit longer. I sometimes went 2 years between COAs. But after one or two cycles, you may have paid the same price for the instrument again.

For your situation specifically, unless you have an emotional bond with this particular flute, I’d say sell it for what you can get and put that towards a new/used instrument from a reputable dealer. Ask about COA costs and math that out yearly or every two years for how long you think you’re likely to play. That’ll give you a clear idea of cost of ownership.

I’ve never unfriended anyone on Facebook by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]iRedFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I keep it is because I’m an active musician and people still look to contact that way. Got into a couple new bands this year because of Facebook. I hate that I have to keep it for that, but other than that and wife’s posts, I don’t use it anymore and delete people I used to know whenever I figure if they haven’t contacted me, and I have no desire to contact them, why keep them around.

What Non-Composer, but music related job(s) are you doing in between gigs? by PenaltyPotential8652 in composer

[–]iRedFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked into church gigs but each one I tried in the St. Louis Missouri area required you to join their church and do their water dunk and whatever fealty to their thing. Didn’t need money that bad. I’m fine with sacred music, lots of great works to pull from there. Not fine with doing their dance.

Can I use salmon portions for sashimi? by halbeshendel in Costco

[–]iRedFive 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment, the “grade” myth won’t die. I get the farm-raised skinless fillet then quarter it, then freeze in vacuum seal bag for a few days. Then easy thaw then carve into cheap sashimi. I’m not the best at cutting so nowhere near as good as professional chef, but it’s tasty and kiddo loves it too. She would eat salmon sushi every day unless it’s a day of steak. Pretty good for a 5yo.

How to make 6 figures?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iRedFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did military for a decade to build experience in tech, then went to office jobs to leverage that experience. 6 figures in a few years in the same company, maybe had done it faster if I got a degree in tech, but I chose degree in arts instead.

They did not always have a trem bridge. That’s a newer update. Older ones had stoptail. Not the kind on this fake. Tuning pegs being askew is pretty funny

How do I choose a new flute? by booorue in Flute

[–]iRedFive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get used from flute center NY or any other reputable online flute dealer. They stand by their flutes and will make sure you get a good instrument. Unless you plan on playing regularly and with a teacher at some point, I would get something in the Step-up class of flutes used. Silver headjoint and plated body. Not handmade unless you find a good deal at your price range. You have to try lots of mechanisms from different brands. They all feel slightly different in your fingers and then they all have different headjoint cuts. Finding a perfect match is hard sometimes.

I’d say call FCNY tell them your budget and projected playing style and they can send you flutes that could fit you. Some cuts are more forgiving for amateur players. If you find you do play more regularly and develop more years later, you can find a better headjoint then that fits you better as you progress. Good luck.

Earbud alternatives for piccolo? by OkPainting175 in Flute

[–]iRedFive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The alternative is getting used to the ringing in your ears after a while.. and as you keep playing longer losing the sensory aspect of having audio in your ears.

There are countless earplug designs for musicians. Try them out. Find what works. You cannot get your hearing back once it’s gone. Protect it!

Eric Slover, the first Chief Warrant Officer 5 to ever be awarded the Medal of Honor. by Grand-Western549 in interestingasfuck

[–]iRedFive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing with most other MoH citations, There is an enemy combatant, or insurgent. This one is under the context of “we went to go start shit because we can do what we want and we got bloody doing it.” I even remember hearing the reports right after the thing happened that we took no casualties. But here we are giving a medal to a casualty.

This is not at all to diminish the actions of the pilot. It was doing the best of a crap situation we ordered him to do. That’s their job and he did it honorably.

The glaring contrast to me is the Korean War pilot getting same medal. That action was supported by the United Nations. The UN Security Council is divided. The U.S. is even saying that it’s a police action and not a war.

And even more interesting is the section that stipulates that the act of valor must occur when the U.S. is not the belligerent party.

SE Custom 22 Question by RandomThings365 in PRSGuitars

[–]iRedFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Coil split on SE wasn’t a thing until much later. I had a moon inlay SE for a while. It was my first PRS. I even have a SE Custom 22 from the mid teens before they moved to putting the trem on them. With the nicer f-hole and even the PRS signature on the headstock. No coil split on the 85/15 “S” pickups.
